“What about that Yardley?” King asked. “They get his?”
Rhodes figured he knew what King was thinking, though maybe not. Maybe he was attributing unworthy thoughts to a worthy man. But he didn’t think so.
“His cousin has a little place just outside Waco. He drove over and got them the day Press went to jail. So you won’t find any emus there.”
As a matter of fact, Rhodes wondered if that might not be exactly where the emus were. He’d told the cousin, whose name was George Yardley, all about the missing emus, and George had expressed a keen interest in the fact that King didn’t have the bills of sale for the birds. He’d even asked what might happen if someone stole the emus from King.
“I wasn’t thinkin’ that I’d find my birds in Waco,” King said.
“I hope not,” Rhodes told him.
B
efore heading back to the jail, Rhodes drove over to the Ward place. The guineas scattered in front of his car, pot-tracking raucously, but otherwise the place was deserted.
Rhodes wondered if Rayjean’s sister was going to keep the place up. Guineas could fend for themselves pretty well, but sooner or later they were going to need someone to feed them. He’d have to give the sister a call when he got back to town. If she wasn’t willing to feed the guineas, Rhodes might have to drive out now and then to give them a little hen scratch.
After all, somebody had to take care of them.
