reading and briefly flicked through the remaining blank pages of the pad.
‘There’s still space for more,’ she commented with a thin smile before setting
it down on the metal table before her and glancing over to the bunks in the far
right corner of the room.
Jasmine looked over the top of the book she was reading as she sat on the
bottom bunk with the pillow resting between her back and the pale wall. ‘Fine,’
she replied, displaying a typically teenage reticence even after the world had
come to an end.
Stormy couldn’t help but chuckle and shake her head as her daughter
Of Mice and Men
. She sat back against the chair and toyed
with her lip piercing, listening to the background noises of the bunker, one of
the numerous pipes that ran along the ceiling creaking softly as she thought
about the two accounts she’d just read in the writing pad.
The door opened behind her and she looked over her shoulder to find
Curtis standing in the corridor beyond.
‘She’s awake,’ he stated simply, his poncho habitually draped over his
Stormy rose, the legs of the chair scraping on the floor. After he’d
brought them to the safety of the bunker in the Adirondack Mountains, she’d
pleaded for him to try and find Leah and Chrissie. He’d finally agreed and,
nearly a week later, had returned with Leah half-dead and draped over Silver’s
‘Has she said anything?’
Curtis shook his head. ‘I believe she thinks she’s dreaming, that or in
‘Well, she’ll soon realise it’s hell when she sees I’m here,’ she said in
jest, giving him a playful nudge.
A rare smile appeared on his face as Stormy shut the door and they headed
up the corridor beneath the humming strip-lights.
