My cock immediately responded to her nakedness.

But Katie
, I thought.

Anita turned over onto her knees so that her ass was sticking out. Her pussy danced in my face.

I cleared my throat. “Did you find the website I asked for?”

“Of course I did. It’s right here.” She touched the laptop. “But I won’t show it to you until your cock is buried deep in my pussy.”

Things were already fucked up with Katie. Fucking this girl wouldn’t make things any worse than they already were.  I stepped forward.

Anita smiled, then spun back onto her ass, spreading her legs wider so that her pussy lips pulled apart, allowing me to see her creamy wetness. “How do you want me, big boy?” She looked up at me from under her long, false lashes.

“You want to play?” I asked, coming to stand in between her knees.

“Yes,” she purred, undoing my pants and yanking them down. When she saw my cock, her eyes got huge.

I gave her an arrogant smile. “Is that what you want, girl?”

“Oh, yes. I want to suck it and lick it like a lollipop. Can I?”

“Do it,” I said, forcing her head down.

She suckled and rode me with her mouth until I was ready to come. “Can you put that here?” She asked, moving back, touching herself.

I took a condom from my wallet and slid it on. “Stand over here and bend over.”

She got up and bent over, pressing her ass against my cock.  I spread her lips and rammed my cock in, pumping her faster and faster. She moaned, rubbing her clit.

“Harder. Faster.”

I wondered if she was talking to herself or me.  When her orgasm shook through her she screamed out. Mine came quickly after.

“Fuck.” I held her on my cock while my orgasm racked through me and imagined I had Katie on my cock instead of Anita. Finally I moved her off and stood.

Anita smiled. “That was fucking amazing, big boy.”

I wasn’t a fan of the “big boy” comment, but I smiled. “Thank you. I enjoyed myself too.”

She gave me a strange look. “Well, aren’t you frosty after sex.”

“Sorry. Look, can you show me the website or not?” I zipped up my tan chinos and tucked in my blue button up shirt. Now that I wasn’t thinking with my dick I wondered if I’d just made a huge mistake.

She smiled lightly. “Yes, hang on.” She clicked some buttons and then turned to laptop to face me. “I was thinking these.”

I was surprised. They were actually quite beautiful. “Those are perfect.”

She beamed. “Thanks.”

I sat and added the flowers to the cart, paid with the credit card number I had memorized, asked for a receipt to be sent to my email, and was done. “Excellent. I’m finished.” I went to the door. “You’re awesome. Thanks for the help and thanks again for everything else.” I winked and left, finding my way back to the conference room. Before I got there I could hear the ruckus. They were shouting, and not in happiness.

“What’s going on?” I asked, walking in.

“It’s the contract,” Brian said.

“What about it?” I went over and picked it up.

“It says you’ll get paid the most and I’ll get the least,” Brian said.

“Well, that’s fucking nuts.” I went to the final page. That was usually where the money was listed. When I saw the numbers though, I smiled. We’d each get a nice chunk, not to mention paid hotel stays, cars, and a tour bus. From just glancing it was actually a better deal than I’d expected. “This is a great deal,” I began. Eddie started to interrupt, but I went on, “but I’m sure we can negotiate this.” I met the gaze of each band member. “Do we want the same salary?”

“Fuck yeah,” Steve said. I couldn’t remember the last time I saw him so pissed.

“Okay.” I picked up the pen and clicked it. “What’s the bottom number?”

CHAPTER 7

Katie

I ran
into the bathroom to check my makeup one last time. Cage was coming over. We were going to the Attic tonight.

As a couple.

It’d been two weeks since the night I was supposed to meet Chloe. Two weeks of the most incredible sex of my life. Cage was kind, sweet. He actually told me on a regular basis he had feelings for me. Not to mention he was settled; he had a regular job and kept his commitments.

As a lover? Cage could make me meow, if that was what he wanted. He was attentive and attuned to my needs and desires. Tonight, though, wasn’t about sex, at least not until later. At the thought of what he might do to me later, my thighs quivered.

But I shook it off. It was important I go to the Attic for two reasons. The first was because I knew Griffin was back in town. Crushed Velvet was performing their final show there. I’d heard they signed a contract with Warren Records and their first single was to be released around Christmas. I was happy for him.

He’d sent me flowers, and it’d meant a lot. It allowed me to feel better about the way things ended between us. I hoped maybe we could be friends.

I also wanted to show him I was okay and in serious like with another totally hot guy. And I wanted to talk to Brian. The drummer for Crushed Velvet hadn’t been to see Birdy once, and that seemed fishy to me.

Then there was the note I’d received at the hotel. It was always in the back of my mind. I couldn’t forget the threats, but there was nothing to go on. Cage and I had staked out the gym where I’d seen her. Cage pulled phone records, her credit, everything I could think of to try and locate her. It was like she’d fallen off the face of the Earth on the day I was to meet her.

No one had seen her at the gym. No one had seen her, period.

But I wasn’t giving up. I had to find a way to get Birdy out of jail. So I kept chipping away at the little things.

Someone knocked. I guessed it was Cage, but peeked in the keyhole just to make sure. And smiled. He was there, making a funny face.

“Hey,” I breathed, opening the door.

Cage came in. “Met your neighbor, Mrs. Lipinsky. She’s quite the woman. Told me I should marry you quick, before you dried up like her prunes.” He laughed. “Then she asked me when I was popping the question.”

I lifted my brow in question.

He laughed harder. “Don’t worry. I said nothing.” He came forward and pressed a kiss to my mouth. I tasted his wintergreen mint breath. “It’s good to see you.”

I felt winded. His kisses did that to me, as did talk about marriage. Mrs. Lipinsky would have to wait. The last man I’d been engaged to had been murdered. “It hasn’t even been twenty-four hours since we saw each other,” I said, smiling, a happy giddiness filling my insides. Cage had a way of doing that to me.

“That is way too fucking long. Why don’t you move in with me?” He asked.

It was an offer he’d issued before. I wasn’t ready. I liked living with Birdy, and I knew she’d be coming back soon. She was my sister. I needed time with her. I’d told Cage all of this. He understood.

“I miss your face. I miss the way my apartment feels when you’re in it—so full of life.” He pulled me to him.

“I miss you too,” I said. “But I can’t. Not yet.”

He smirked, rubbing his hand over his short hair. “I won’t stop asking.”

I leaned into him, kissing him. “Please don’t.” It was a weird feeling, being so happy.

He took my hand. I grabbed my clutch and followed him out. I locked the door. Inside his limo, I sat back while he made us a drink.

“Did I tell you how beautiful you look tonight?” He handed me the drink.

“No, you didn’t.” I knew I looked nice. I’d splurged a little and bought a red dress. It was a wraparound that hugged my body. It had a low V in the front and back, and hit the middle of my thighs. I wore a pair of black Jimmy Choo ankle boots with it and pulled my hair up into a loose curly bun, clipping a small platinum butterfly within the curls. My makeup was dark, the way Birdy had shown me to do it, and I wore red lipstick. Yeah, I looked hot. I wondered if I’d got so glammed up for Griffin. I wanted to deny it, but that was probably part of the reason.

CHAPTER 8

Katie

At th
e
club, our driver opened the door. Cage helped me out. We walked in through the VIP entrance, which was a recent addition.

We sat at Birdy’s table. It was the best in the place, easy access to the bar and in easy view of the stage. I was nervous. His show started in five minutes.

“What can I get you?” It was the girl who’d told me about Griffin leaving.

Bitch.

“I’ll have a vodka tonic.”

“And for you?” the waitress asked Cage.

“The same.”

She smiled. “I’ll be right back.”

“No catfight. That was the whole reason I came.” He laughed, taking my hand in his.

I took him in. He was gorgeous. His white shirt was unbuttoned so that I could see part of his chest. He wore gray dress pants, a black belt, and black shoes. His blond hair was a little longer than usual, but still cropped short. Even in the dark I could see his vivid blue eyes sparkle with mischief.

“Nope. I’m going to be on my best behavior.”

He laughed. “Not likely.”

The waitress brought our drinks.

I took a sip. “Thank you.”

“Course.”

Cage paid the woman and asked her to start a tab.

The waitress left. Griffin walked on stage. It was as though the whole world stopped for him and me. He wore his standard outfit: faded jeans, no shirt, and bare feet. He looked out into the crowd, then his eyes found mine and he smiled. My heart sped up, began beating wildly. How did he do that?

The rest of Crushed Velvet came on stage and the Attic came back to life with high pitched screams from the girls near the stage, Brian pounding his large set of drums, and the crowd talking feverishly.

“This is a brand new song. It’ll release December fifteenth. Be sure to download it and tell your friends.”

The crowd roared. The rest of the band began playing.

It was a slow song. Haunting. Filled with sorrow.

She died in the summer, when I was too young to remember

Growing up without her, it was just me and my father

He taught me how to win, how to hurt others with a grin

She used to give me love, he just likes to kick and shove

I’ve grown accustomed to no feelings, lightning on the ceiling

That’s how I live my life,

No emotion,

No devotion,

No commotion

It’s just easier that way, playing my days away

No thought of what I am, how I’m living, don’t give a damn

She left me in the fall, because I ruined it all

I forgot what it meant to love, to care for another above

All else

But it hurts, losing her to other jerks

Her eyes tear into me, cursing me

And I wish I could die, run away and hide

A coward living a lie with no consequences to keep me from flying

That’s how I live my life,

No emotion,

No devotion,

No commotion

It’s just easier that way, playing my days away

No thought of what I am, how I’m living, don’t give a damn…

CHAPTER 9

Katie

I listene
d
to the words, the way his voice sang them, so full of painful meaning and amazingly sad. The song brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me again that I knew very little about Griffin Maxwell. Next to nothing, really, except he had a father he wasn’t fond of. That, and he was beyond rich. And sexy. And incredibly beautiful.

“Dandelion.” Cage said, rocking my hand in his. “You okay?””

“Hm.” I picked up my drink, gulping down a large amount.

Griffin sang the last notes of the song.

I wiped at the tears in the corners of my eyes, hoping I was discreet. “Fine. What about you?”

“Good. Worried about you and why you look like you’re about to cry.” His lips were right next to my ear. He whispered softly and warmth enveloped me.

I sniffled. “I’m not sure what’s wrong.”

One of his hands massaged my back. “If this is too hard, seeing him, we can go.”

I glanced over. Had I hurt his feelings? “No, it’s fine.”

“You had feelings for him. You told me so. And things didn’t end well, in spite of the flowers he sent.”
