“I should point out that you were also looking at me just now.”

“I could feel you staring.”

“Well, it’s not my fault that you’re gorgeous. It’s very distracting, really. It’s a good thing I didn’t meet you before I made my fortune. I’d be a poor man.”

Megan stifled a smile. “Shut up and get to work, Chevalier.”

“Yes, boss.”

Helen stood at the entrance to the kitchen, watching them, “Her brother, Mark, calls her Bossy Boots. I think it suits her.”

“Mom! You were supposed to call me if you wanted to come down the stairs!”

“See? Bossy Boots.” Helen grinned at Luc as she shuffled slowly toward the counter. “I made it down just fine. Stop all this fussing. I just came to grab my magazine.”

Luc stood up and linked his arm through Helen’s, gently helping her as she made her way back to the couch. “Bossy Boots? That is very fitting. Do you think I can get away with calling her that?” he asked conspiratorially.

“Not if you don’t want a throat punch!” Megan called to him. She could hardly wipe the grin off her face as she saw Luc taking care of her mom without Helen minding a bit. It had been like that since she had gotten home. He had such a way with her that she never argued with him when he helped her. When Megan tried, Helen would swat her hand away and make a comment about not wanting to be a burden.

Luc got Helen settled on the couch with a blanket on her lap and then walked over to Megan on his way back to the table. He leaned down and gave her a peck on the cheek, then lowered his voice. “Bossy Boots? Is that also your dominatrix name?”

Megan laughed softly, turning her head to his and kissing him on the lips. “I’m afraid that’s a secret. Now get to work before I’m forced to go get my whips.”

In the living room, Helen sat smiling to herself. She hadn’t seen her daughter this happy in years, and it warmed her heart. Maybe this could work out. Luc certainly had proven to be a wonderfully thoughtful and caring man. She sat thinking about how he insisted on cooking dinner every night and had gotten the spare room prepared for her arrival, and how great he was with Elliott. She resolved to find a way to make sure he and Megan stayed together. So what if he was from France? People moved all the time.

“Mom.” Elliott’s voice was quiet. “Will Luc be here tomorrow?”

Megan looked down at her little sleepy boy as she snuggled him under the covers. “I think so. For part of the day, anyway.”

“Good. I can see why he’s your friend. I wish he could move here.”

Megan sighed. “He’s nice, isn’t he?”

“He’s fun too, and I can tell he likes you more than a friend. Maybe you two could get married?”

Megan’s mind froze for a second. “Um, you know . . . Um, I don’t think so, buddy. Luc lives very far away from here. He’s a wonderful friend but he’s going to have to go back to his home and his work soon.”

“That’s too bad. I would like him to live with us. It’s nice to have another guy in the house to hang out with.”

“It’s been fun, hasn’t it? Now off to sleep, kiddo. You’ve got school in the morning.”

A feeling of dread washed over Megan, settling itself into her chest. In less than a week, Elliott had already become attached to Luc.
Shit
, she thought.
How could I have let this happen?

Megan needed Luc to leave. Elliott was getting too attached and she was falling in love with him. She knew the longer he stayed, the harder the crash would be when he finally ended things with her.

* * *

That night Luc and Megan sat cuddled up on the couch in front of the fire talking, as they did each night before Luc went back to the hotel. Helen had gone to bed a couple of hours earlier, shortly after Elliott. Her medication made her fall asleep quickly.

Luc lifted Megan’s hair out of the way and pressed his lips to her neck. Megan rewarded him with a low moan. Desire ripped through her body as he sucked on her skin. They hadn’t had sex in days, and it was killing them both to be so close and not satisfy their need for each other.

Suddenly, Megan was frightened at the desperation she felt for Luc. “Luc, what are we doing? We’re treading on very dangerous ground here. I’m starting to feel too much for you. . . .”

Luc pulled back a bit. “I know. So am I, but I can’t stop, Megan. I have to have you. I need to be with you,” he whispered, running his nose along her cheek.

“But, Luc, I don’t know if I can keep my promise to you. I might be falling for you. . . .”

Luc took her face in both hands and looked into her beautiful green eyes. “For tonight, let’s pretend that this is our home, we are here together and it’s okay to need each other. Let’s pretend we can wake up in each other’s arms every morning.”
It’s all I want to do anyway
, he thought.

Luc kissed her again. Megan’s eyes closed and she melted into him, resting one of her hands on his sculpted chest and reaching the other one up to his jaw. Her yearning for him was growing more intense by the second. Luc was here in her home, he had spent several days in her life and it hadn’t sent him running like she had thought it would. She wanted to connect with him in the most intimate of ways, to show him what it all meant to her. She wanted to pretend that he was hers and that this was forever.

Megan pushed her tongue into his mouth, exploring him passionately. Using one hand, she pulled his T-shirt up and then ran her fingers along his abs and to the top of his jeans. Undoing the button, she let her hand slip in between his jeans and his boxer briefs, rubbing his length firmly, over the fabric. Luc moaned at the feeling of it and opened his eyes to watch her by the light of the fire.

He stopped and pulled back. “What about Elliott and your mom?”

Megan kissed his neck. “He won’t wake up, and if he did, he would call to me from his room. He won’t come looking for me. And that medication will have my mom sleeping for hours.”

Reassured, Luc rolled himself off the couch so he was kneeling in front of her and gave her a little half smile as he undid her jeans and slid them off her legs.

Megan’s skin tingled at the feeling of his fingertips on her. She leaned forward, pushing his jeans and his briefs down his thighs, freeing him of all constraints. Luc put both hands under her and pulled her body toward the edge of the couch so his cock was now pressed against her French-cut pink panties. Megan wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him closer to her. Luc lifted her sweater over her head, leaving only her lacy pink bra to contend with. He ran his hands over her shoulders, then around to her back, making short work of her bra clasp. Gliding his fingers along the straps, he slid her bra off and tossed it behind him, taking in the sight of her naked breasts as the flickering light of the fire kissed her skin. His expression was suddenly animalistic. Her nipples were already hard, and her breathing grew heavy just from the anticipation of what was about to happen. Luc lowered his mouth over her right breast, circling her nipple with his tongue and then sucking on it urgently, rolling his tongue over it as he did.

Megan gasped at the sensation, watching him as he gave her such tender attention, every touch bringing her incredible pleasure. He moved over to her other breast, gently pushing her away so her head was resting on the back of the couch, leaving her sprawled before him. He ran one hand down the centre line of her body until he reached her panties. He rubbed his palm on the outside of the lace, feeling through the skimpy fabric how wet she already was

“Mmm, I think you must have liked what I’ve been doing so far,” he teased. He watched her breasts rise and fall as she breathed, feeling his cock twitch with excitement.

Megan nodded, unable to speak. Her desire for him was coursing through her body now; she could think of nothing but having him inside her. She bit her bottom lip as she gazed back at him, taking in the sight of his lean muscles as they rippled with each move of his hands. Putting both hands on her hips, he pulled her panties down smoothly, letting his fingers caress her skin. Megan lowered her feet to the floor, allowing him to take her panties off all the way. He took a moment to remove his jeans and underwear completely, leaving the two of them stripped nude.

Megan reached for Luc with one hand as she wrapped her legs around him again and pulled his body toward hers. She could feel his hard length against her sex now, and the feeling of his smooth skin alone was almost enough to make her come. Reaching down for him, she used her hand to position the head of his cock at her wet opening, drenching him as he slowly slid his way inside her. Megan’s breath caught, feeling each delicious inch of him where she wanted him most. This felt so right, to be with Luc, who adored her and took care of her. Megan didn’t want to deny herself anymore.

Luc pushed himself inside Megan, feeling the comfort of her tight warmth around him. He was overcome by a sudden desire to come inside her, as if that would make her his forever. There was no trace of common sense left in him, only a deep need he had never felt before. He lowered his face to her shoulder, sucking along the nape of her neck and then up to her earlobe. He could feel her tighten around him as he gently held her earlobe between his teeth for a moment, rocking his hips back and forth slowly. She turned her head so that her mouth met his. She was breathing heavily and her lips were parted, waiting for his tongue to explore her mouth. Luc gave her the kiss she was searching for, thrusting his tongue to find hers. He could feel her starting to come, and she pressed her forehead hard to his and closed her eyes as she silently came on his bare skin.

The sensation of it somehow brought Luc back to his senses, and he pulled out just before he came. Megan lifted her torso, pressing her body to his as he climaxed. She kissed him wildly, feeling his release against her stomach. Even after her own orgasm, she was still filled with an urgency to be with him that she had never felt with another man.

They kissed like this for a long moment before Luc pulled back. “Let’s pretend it’s okay to love each other like this.”

Megan’s mouth met his urgently. It was here in this moment that she knew she
did
love him and that she was powerless to stop herself. “It all feels so real, this dream of us,” she whispered.

Luc held his hands to her face. “This is the dream I want. I don’t want to go.”

“Then stay, Luc. Stay with me here.”

He responded not with words but with a kiss that held every desire he had for her. Megan could feel his passion and she desperately wished that if she could just hold him there, this moment wouldn’t end. Maybe somehow, if they just stayed like this long enough, everything would be different in the morning. He wouldn’t ever have to leave and they could start a life together. A life of happiness, passion and unending love.

Finally, Luc lifted himself away from her, grabbing some tissues out of a box on the coffee table to wipe both of them off. He pressed his forehead to hers and sighed, feeling filled with love and contentment.

It was late and the fire had burned out, leaving only embers glowing in the dark room as Luc pulled on his jeans. Megan pulled up her panties and watched him from the couch as he crossed to the bathroom to dispose of the tissues. She had never had the chance to fully appreciate how completely irresistible he looked from behind, especially with no shirt on. She shivered a bit as she pulled her sweater over her head and tossed him his T-shirt as he walked back into the room.

“I should be hiding that instead of giving it to you,” she said with a little smile.

Luc caught the T-shirt with one hand and pulled it on. He crossed the room and wrapped his arms around her, letting his hands rest on her ass. She hadn’t put her jeans on yet and he ran his fingers along the bottom edge of her panties, his body responding to the feeling of her smooth skin

“I don’t want to go. I’m being selfish, but I want to wake up with you in my arms in the morning. I’ve been wanting to do that since I met you,” he said in a low voice.

Megan nuzzled her face into his neck and closed her eyes. She could feel Luc’s arms wrapped around her, and she felt so safe with him there to hold her. “I wish there was some way we could spend the night in each other’s arms tonight.”

“But it’s not a good idea. I should call a cab.”

“Not yet, Luc. Can we just hold each other for a little while longer?”

“Of course,
mon ange
, if that is what you want.”

Picking up a plush blanket from the armchair, he held her hand and led her back to the couch. They sat together and Luc wrapped her in his arms, covering them in the warmth of the blanket. Megan rested her head on his chest. She could feel him running his fingers slowly up and down her arm. The feeling of it was hypnotic. Exhaustion overtook her and Megan fell promptly asleep. Luc sat awake for a long time, trying to figure out what his next move should be. Somehow their relationship had taken a turn he had never expected and had certainly never wanted.

These past few days had offered him a glimpse of a different life. Her life. And he was shocked by how much it had fulfilled him. It wasn’t about money or excitement or anything else he had believed to be important. Luc had taken care of Megan in a moment of uncertainty and fear; he had eased her burden and had loved every minute of it. He had fully enjoyed spending time with her mom and her little boy, playing with Elliott and cooking for them all. He had revelled in the satisfaction of caring for Helen and helping Megan out. And it had had nothing to do with her gratitude. It had been a gift to
him
to be welcomed into their family with open arms. He hadn’t been part of a family for so long, and when he had, it was just him and his mother. As hard as his mother had tried, there was always an air of loss and loneliness in their home. Here, for the first time, he felt none of that. Only the warmth and fullness of belonging in a happy home. Now that he had made these connections and had felt how rewarding they could be, he wouldn’t be able to pretend he didn’t know what he had been missing.
But I can’t be a part of their lives. I’m not built that way
, he told himself as he finally gave in to much needed sleep.
