“Walk?”

“It’s important how you carry yourself, to show off our clothes to their best advantage.”

Walk?
He got up and marched woodenly across the room.

“Please try to relax, Jamie. Don’t force it.”

He gave her an exasperated smile. “I’ve never thought about my walk before. Now that

I’m conscious of it, I can’t do it!”

“I understand. I tell you what. Why don’t you pretend you’ve just come into a—oh, a

bar, let’s say. And you see me sitting at this table. And you want to come over and join me.

Just start over there and come toward me.”

He went to the door, turned, gave her a long look, then approached her with his best

Don Johnson come-on saunter.

She seemed pleased.

“Would you mind taking off your shirt?”

His eyebrows rose.

“You will be modeling bathing suits.”

“Oh yeah.” He took off the shirt and flexed a little here and there.

She frowned slightly.

“What’s wrong?”

“Ah…nothing. Nothing at all. That’s okay. You can put your shirt back on now.”

That rankled him. No woman had ever asked him to put his shirt
on.

She rose from the sofa and held out her hand. “I’ll call you within a few days.”

“That’s it? You mean the interview is over? Don’t I have to fill out an application or

something?”

“I don’t think that will be necessary.”

What the hell—?

He tried to smile as he shook her hand, but found himself too pissed off. What was it

about him that she decided she didn’t like? Jamie had been on enough job interviews to

know when he hadn’t made it.

“Say, listen,” he began. “I want you to know that I would really like this job. I mean,

I’d give your customers a Class A performance. They’ll be buying clothes right and left.”

“I’m sure you would, Jamie—”

“But?”

“As I told you, I have a number of other men to interview.”

“But I ask you in all honesty,” he said, giving her his most winning smile, “what could

they possibly have that I don’t?”

“Well…”

He weighed the situation in a split second. The job paid more than anything he could

even dream of earning elsewhere, it was cushy work, and he’d be exposed daily to lonely,

horny rich broads. He decided he would take the gamble.

“Listen,” he said, stepping closer to her. Jamie figured she was in her early fifties. Just

the age to be susceptible to a little soft talk. “I really want this job.”

She looked up at him.

“I mean,” he said quietly, his smile intimate, “I’d do anything to get it.”

“You would?”

God, but his heart was pounding. Well, what was the worst she could do? He figured

he already wasn’t getting the job, he had nothing to lose.

“What would you do?” she asked, also quietly.

She was falling for it!

“You name it.”

“Are you offering me a bribe, Jamie?” she said a little coyly.

“All I can say is, once you hire me you’ll be glad you did. I’ll outshine all those other

pretty boys down there. I’ll make your customers very happy.”

“And what about me?”

He didn’t miss a beat. “I could make you happy, too.”

“How?”

He hesitated for only a fraction of a second, then bent his head and kissed her on the

lips.

When he drew back, he saw to his relief and boundless joy that she was smiling.

“That was nice,” she murmured.

“Can I have the job?”

“You’re not done bribing me.”

And then he had his arms around her and was smothering her with his mouth.

“Hey,” she said with a laugh, pushing away from him. “Slow down! We have all day.”

He reached for her. “I just want to show you how grateful I can be.”

“Not in five minutes, you won’t.” She took his hand and led him to the sofa. “Now,”

she said, curling her arms around his neck. “Show me what you can do.”

He did, vigorously and hurriedly, thinking: Jesus! Easiest way in the world to get a job!

When she stopped him the first time and magically produced a Trojan, he was

stunned, but he put it on as she requested. But when she stopped him a second time and

insisted again that he slow down, he felt his annoyance rise. It was hard to do it slowly, he

was anxious to slip it to her, to give her, as he would put it, “the fuck of her life.” But

when they soon got to that stage, and they were on the floor and he had her panties off

and he was going away at her between her legs, she stopped him again and said, a little

impatiently, “I said slow down. What are you, in a hurry to catch a plane?”

He lifted up slightly and gave her an indignant look. “I’ve never had any complaints

before.”

“Oh, I’m sure you haven’t, Jamie. Women rarely criticize a man for his lovemaking.

They’re too frightened of hurting that delicate ego. But I’m not afraid to say it, Jamie.

Quite honestly, you’re not very good.”

His erection deflated.

When he started to get up, she drew him back down and said, “Now don’t go getting

all steamed up. If you get it right, you’ve got the job. How’s that?”

“If I get it right! Lady, I’ve fucked more—”

She put her hand on his mouth. “Please don’t use that word.”

“What do you want from me? Do you want me to f—, make love to you or what?”

“Yes, I do. But in a way that pleases
me,
not yourself.”

He frowned genuinely at this. Didn’t fucking please both parties?

“Listen, Jamie,” she said gently, stroking the back of his beautiful golden hair, “I’m

sure you would be very good, but you’re going too fast and trying too hard. No woman

likes to have a panting, slobbering beast on top of her. For one thing while you were

inside me you never even looked at me. As though you weren’t even aware of me.”

“How can you say that? Jesus, I’ve got my pecker up your—”

“And another thing, Jamie. The language. Before you make love to a woman, be cer-

tain that she wants to hear words like that. Otherwise, they’re a turn-off.”

He heaved an exasperated sigh.

“Jamie,” she murmured. “Let’s try again.”

She reached down for him, to coax him back into hardness. But when he took her

wrist and said, “That won’t be necessary. I’ll be there in a second or two,” she realized

what one of Jamie’s problems was. He had a small penis.

When she voiced this, he looked plainly uncomfortable. “Well, you know what they

say! It’s not the size that counts but what you do with it.”

“And that’s true. Not all women like a big penis, Jamie. Many don’t even care what the

size is, just so long as the man knows how to give pleasure.”

This was what she had discovered about Jamie: that, in order to compensate for what

he thought was an inadequacy, he made love with too much ardor and physical exertion.

The result, however, was not a compensation at all, but a compounding of the problem.

“When you want to make love to a woman in the future,” she said softly, caressing

him, bringing him back to arousal. “Don’t open her legs as wide as they will go, as you did

with me. Bring them together, almost touching. Like this. You see? You can still enter me,

but now I
feel
it. And it feels good, Jamie.”

He was starting to relax. Forgetting his hurt pride, he let her guide him, realizing that

he was in fact deriving more pleasure from what she was teaching him than from his usual

sexual performance. He could feel her better, it was a tighter fit, and there was something

new in it—a warmth, a kind of closeness he hadn’t felt before.

“Slowly,” she murmured as her hips rocked with his. “Slowly and gently. A woman is

most sensitive right at the opening. Bring yourself almost all the way out, let me feel it,

and then in again. Oh…” she breathed. “Like that. Yes…
Yes…

He took longer than he ever had in his life, and he enjoyed it more than he ever had.

When they were done, picking themselves up and straightening their clothing, he said

with a sly grin, “Well? Do I have the job?”

She gave him a long, considering look. “I wonder,” she said, as if entertaining a new

thought. “Would you like to work upstairs?”

Upstairs? In management? Jesus, if he’d known before what banging a lady employer

could bring. Now came the tricky part, revealing to him the true purpose of the interview,

the true nature of what went on behind the butterfly logo.

“I must have your absolute trust, Jamie. I mean it. Not a word of this can be breathed

outside this office.”

“You can trust me.”

Yes, she was sure she could. Especially once she told him what the upstairs work paid.

It never failed—the prospective companion wanted the job too badly to spout off about

it to friends. No sense in risking the golden-egg-laying goose, they invariably thought; no

sense in stirring up competition for the job.

At first, he listened and stared at her in amazement. And then, as it started to sink in

and he came to accept the idea, all sorts of lights lit up behind handsome Jamie’s blue

eyes.

“You say I’ll get that kind of salary, plus big tips”—and he had no doubt the tips

would be big—“
and
all the pussy I want?”

“Our members are women of high class. If they wish to hear language like that, they’ll

let you know. Otherwise, breasts are breasts and not tits, and so on.”

“Yeah, gotcha.”

“Now, only I and my assistant will know your true identity. There are no written

records, you will be paid in cash.”

“Wow. Does the Mafia run this or what?”

She gave him a tolerant smile. “You will never see anyone else who is involved with the

operation of Butterfly. You will only ever be contacted by me or my assistant. And I will

trust your discretion when you are with the other companions. No crude comparing of

notes, please.”

“Yeah, I got it. My lips are sealed. Hell, for that kind of money—”

“Now, there are a few things we have to get established ahead of time. First of all, you

will use a condom at all times. At
all
times. Do you have an objection to a blood test?”

“I guess not.”

“Now then. Our operation is run slightly differently from those that cater to male

clients. For instance, our busiest hours are during the day, not at night, for obvious rea-

sons. Many of our members are married. They can only get away during the day. You are

never to ask a member her name or where she lives, or anything at all personal about her.

It is the anonymity of Butterfly that makes our members feel safe. Women come here for

something that would be impossible to find, and too dangerous to look for anywhere else.

Again, I must stress the secrecy of what we do here. To somehow let the truth leak out

would invite, shall we say, certain snoopers that we cannot afford to have know about us?”

Snoopers! thought Jamie with a laugh. A police raid on this place would no doubt read

like a regular
Who’s Who.

“No drugs, Jamie. That is a number one rule. And keep your alcohol intake to a min-

imum. Don’t drink with a member at all, if possible. If you wear a regular after-shave or

cologne, go very lightly on it. Our members can’t afford to go back to their husbands

smelling like Brut. You must act like a gentleman at all times. Our members are ladies,

never forget that. Your first few assignments will be with members of long standing and

whose sexual preferences are rather simple and straightforward. As for the sex itself,

remember always to go by what the woman wants, not what you want or what you think

she wants. Look for signals. I’m sure you’ve heard that some women are above-the-waist

women, others are below-the-waist women. Find out which your lady is and move

accordingly. And for goodness sake, Jamie, go slowly. These women are paying a lot of

money for your lovemaking. Make it good. And learn to be fast with the condom. Don’t

be obvious about putting it on. During intercourse,
look
at the woman you’re with. Eye

contact during the sex act is a big turn-on. She’ll also know that you are making love to

her,
and not fantasizing about someone else.”

She smiled and said, “So. Do you have any questions?”

“Only one. How’s the money handled?”

“Very tastefully and discreetly. Don’t be obvious about it. And if she gives you a tip, be

sure to show your gratitude. Chances are, it will be bigger next time. Any other questions?”

“Yeah. When do I start!”

And that was how Ann Hastings recruited companions for Butterfly.
