Chapter 21

A
fter a celebratory night when the shuffle board pucks flew and the beers were sucked down one after another, the group began to break up. As they were leaving, Bretten pulled out his phone to check the time. It was almost midnight.

Brooke sidled up next to him. “You expecting a text from your girl?” she said playfully.

He looked up, startled. “Uh, no, just checking the time.”

Her eyes lingered on him, and he enjoyed it. He let his do the same as he took in the smooth lines of her cheek bones, her small nose and her beautiful full lips. He wanted to put his lips on them, and for a brief moment he considered doing so.

Dammit, you’re kind of drunk, Maris
, he thought. There was no way planting a kiss on the beautiful Brooke Simms would be a good idea.

“Let’s go! Bobby Newcomb yelled. His big southern voice pulled away the last remnants of any idea of kissing Brooke.

The rowdy group made the walk back to the house and laughed as they talked and shared stories. After piling through the door, Bretten found himself in the kitchen with Brooke. They both wanted some water to help stave off a hangover.

Again, he wondered if he should kiss her. She was so close, so beautiful, and it seemed she wanted it. But before he could make a mistake that might turn out so right, Brooke spoke. “Okay, Bretten, I’ve got to get to bed. Congratulations for today.”

She leaned in and wrapped her arms around him. The hug felt so good and Bretten let his arms fall over her shoulders. “Thanks,” he managed.

She backed away like she’d just caught her drunken self almost doing something she’d regret. “No problem, good night.”

Just like that she was gone. Bretten stood in the kitchen all alone for a long moment. His emotions swirled as he thought about what he wanted to do and what he should do. Sometimes the line was very clear cut. Other times it was blurred. Finally, he walked up to his room. Rodrigo was already snoring softly in his bed.

Bretten ripped off his shirt as he kicked off his shoes, and then pulled his jeans down and tossed them at the foot of the bed. He stood in the cool room in his green boxer briefs and thought about Brooke one last time before flopping onto his bed.

He drifted to sleep, only to be awoken by the light creak of the wooden floor. He assumed it was Rodrigo, but then a hand was on his shoulder. He opened his eyes to find a beautiful woman hovering above him. She wore nothing but a white lace bra and matching panties. Her lithe body seemed to beg for him. He started to speak, but her hand moved to his mouth.

“Where’s Rodrigo?” Brooke whispered.

Bretten glanced over at his bed. It was moments earlier when he’d seen him snoring. “I don’t know,” he said. “He was there a few minutes ago.

Mischief danced in Brooke’s eyes as she pulled down the blankets and swung her left leg over him. “Cute underwear,” she said with a giggle.

“Yours too,” Bretten smiled.

She lowered her mouth to his as she pressed her hips into his growing member. Her lips were on his chin, his neck, his chest, his stomach. She yanked the boxers down and hungrily took him in her mouth, her tongue drifting over him as her lips sank downward. Bretten thrust his head back on the pillow and a slight moan escaped his lips. Her lips moved up and down over his hardness and the heat built. Was this really happening?

She lifted her head and looked up at him. “You like that?”

“Oh God, yes!”

“Good, me too.”

Then it was like she hadn’t even moved and she was on top of him. She pulled her white panties to the side and sank onto him. She was so wet, so ready. How could this be happening?

She rocked back and forth and moaned. He reached for her breasts and pulled the bra down. Her perfect pink nipples danced in the moonlight and he pinched and twisted them lightly. “Oh yes, Oh yes, you know just how to touch me, Bretten,” Brooke said as she threw her head back and moaned in ecstasy.

Bretten’s swollen member could not take it anymore. He arched his hips and pushed his head into the pillow. He was on the verge of exploding and he started to tell her so, but she was gone.

Bretten shot up in bed. His erection poked out the top of his boxer briefs and he tried to catch his breath. He glanced over at Rodrigo, fearful that he would be staring right at him. He wasn’t. He was still snoring softly.

It was only a dream, but it felt so real. As Bretten dropped back onto the pillow he knew that he was desperate to be with Brooke, to be inside her for real, maybe more desperate than he’d ever been for anything before.

* * *

Just a few rooms away Tristan Holmes held his iPhone watching Bretten’s latest fight at Courage and Heart Fighting Championships. What did Brooke see in this loser? He wasn’t even that good, and if he tried to make a move on Brooke he was ready to stomp his ass. In his mind Brooke was still his, and nobody else’s.

Two floors down, Brooke Simms laid in the darkness of her own room. She thought back to earlier that night when she was sure that Bretten was about to kiss her. She wondered how she would have responded. She wasn’t ready for any type of relationship, but there was something about him that she longed for.

Some 1,200 miles to the west, Bear Haynes sat at Marshall’s Tavern and drank his ninth beer as the Mavericks were up by 19 points over the Kings in the third quarter. Everything was lining up for old Bear. He was on his way to big things as an agent and would soon break free of borrowing from Mr. Smith.

Just five miles away from Marshall’s, at the Encore’s XS Nightclub on the strip, two very dangerous men drank vodkas as they recounted their latest trip to the desert.

As the men laughed about the way their last victim squirmed, Detective Westingham gave one last look at the photos of Nick Maris and Raydell Richardson before closing the folder and turning off his office lights.

It would only be a matter of time before they would all come crashing together at UCC 132, a night when one fighter would lose and one would win, a night when momentous news would be met with terrible tragedy, a night that some would not live through and that would shake the others to their cores.

The Beginning of Caged Love (Book Two)

B
retten stood in the darkness of the gym’s boxing ring. It was the middle of his first week at Whit’s and the group had just returned from a movie. The mini-break in the middle of what had already become a monotonous grind had helped him clear his mind. He wanted the moment of peace to continue so he made his way across the alley and climbed into the ring.

The gym was cool and he let his eyes close as he slid his bare feet along the rough canvas. He took in air through his nose until it sank into his belly before releasing it slowly through his mouth. He felt every ache in his tired body, but as he relaxed the pain slipped to the edges of his awareness.

Without opening his eyes he raised his hands into a fighting position and began to throw slow combinations. His knuckles cut through the cool air and he fell into an easy rhythm. The fly ball, the one he’d dropped in the final game of the NCAA World Series almost half a year ago, flashed through his thoughts. That moment felt like a low point in his life, but it was the following day when it all came crashing down.

He remembered how his mom sounded when she told him the horrible news. His brother had been murdered. Bretten realized he was squeezing his eyes shut and his punches had picked up speed.

He wanted to let it all go. All the sadness that had propelled him to this very ring bubbled to the surface and tears threatened the corners of his eyes. He inhaled even deeper and shifted his stance. Hook, cross, hook…hook, cross, hook…his hands whooshed through the darkness.

“Are you defeating lions?”

Bretten jumped and opened his eyes. He turned to find Brooke standing just inside of the ropes. The red security lights along the back wall illuminated the side of her face. She was beautiful.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to startle you,” she added.

“No, uh, it’s okay. I was just clearing my head.”

“Believe me, I understand. Do you want to talk about it?”

Bretten ran his hand over his dark hair. “I’m not sure.”

“This is a tough business,” she said softly. “It’s good to let it all go sometimes.”

Bretten looked down at his hands and opened and closed his fists. “It’s not that. I was just thinking about my brother.”

There was a moment of stillness and the shadows seemed to push Bretten and Brooke closer together. “What about him?” she coaxed.

Again he opened and closed his hands. “I’ve only told one other person this…”

“It’s okay, you don’t have to.”

“He was…murdered.” The word stung his throat and he swallowed hard. “It was six months ago and I still have a hard time even believing it.”

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” She was now in front of him and her arms found his waist. “I had no idea.”

“It’s okay. It’s probably why I’m here right now.”

He raised his arms and wrapped them around her shoulders until his fingers interlocked behind her back. She leaned into him, her cheek pressed to his chest. Their breathing rose and fell as one and they remained in the embrace for a long time, two lost souls touching each other in an effort to become one.

She leaned back and tilted her chin upward. Bretten found himself falling into her big green eyes. “I think you’re where you are supposed to be,” Brooke whispered.

Bretten totally agreed as he let his chin fall until their lips were aligned. “You are so amazing, so beautiful.” He leaned into her, his hands falling to the small of her back. Their lips brushed, hers were soft and warm. His heartache shattered for the briefest of moments and his hardened body relaxed against her.

Their lips pressed together harder and she let out a soft sigh. She could not believe that she was doing this, but the truth was that she wanted it badly, and needed it.

Their kiss deepened and they held each other tighter. Brooke shifted herself against him and squeezed. His body was so hard and strong. She loved the way it felt against her. She slid her hand down his back and under his t-shirt. Fingers spread; she rubbed the hot skin of the small of his back and was rewarded with Bretten’s hands sliding the back of her shirt upward.

The sensation sent shockwaves through her body and she wanted him right then and there in the boxing ring.

A slamming door brought them out of the embrace. “I’m sorry, Bretten. I shouldn’t have done that.” She pulled away.

“No, it’s totally okay. I wanted it.”

“Me too, that’s what scares me.” She began to back away. “Will you be okay?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine, just want a couple more minutes.”

“Okay, we can talk more about your brother whenever you want.”

“Sure,” he offered a sad smile.

Brooke ducked through the ropes and faded into the darkness.

Bretten stood in the red glow with his emotions tangled in a knotted mess.

Across the alley Tristan slammed the back door of the house and stormed up to his room.
