I leaned over my desk, grabbed my mouse, and punched up Cole Tea on the screen. A jolt of adrenaline spiked my veins when I saw Cole’s value.

Listening to Dad’s stream of words laced in fear made my mouth go dry. This wasn’t like him. He laid it out simply—Cole Tea was under a hostile takeover.

“I need you and Henry on that jet now.”

“I’m on my way. Call a board meeting. Sign nothing. Understand?”

I hung up.

“What’s going on?” asked Shay.

“I have to go to New York.” I grabbed my jacket and headed for the door.

“When?”

“Now. The jet’s fueling.”

“I’ll drive you.”

I bolted into the foyer. “Mia.”

Shay followed me out. “Cam, I brought up the collar tracker on my phone for Mia and showed it to her.”

“The address of where it is?”

“Yes.”

“Why?” I shrugged on my jacket

“To reassure her I could find it.”

“How did she react?”

“You didn’t tell her it’s an antique. And it once belonged to your aunt.”

“Why’d you have to tell her that, Shay?”

“It just came out.”

“Mia!” I called up the stairs.

“Hello, sir,” said Lincoln, appearing out of nowhere. “Ms. Lauren told me she’s gone to visit a friend. I was to let you know.”

A jolt of panic hit me when I read Shay’s face.

“She’s gone to get the collar back.” Shay grabbed my arm. “Cameron, you’ve got to get to New York. I’ll go—”

“Are your men tracking her?”

He closed his eyes in dread. “Without her collar…”

I grabbed the keys to the Bugatti Veyron.

CHAPTER 22

THE BMW WAS GONE.

I tried to steady my hands long enough to get the key fob to work. I knew Mia’s collar had been ripped from her neck.

Blinded by jealousy, I’d been wrong about everything.

Shay stepped out of the subterranean elevator and waved his laptop in the air to let me know he’d retrieved it from his Mercedes. My car door clicked open, which was a good thing as I’d contemplated kicking in a window.

Shay pointed to the Bugatti Veyron. “You don’t want to take something less conspicuous?”

Yes, this was a beautiful car and stood out like a whore at church, but she was the fastest roadster in the world and capable of 0-253 mph in seconds.

Exactly what we needed.

“This one’s fine.” I climbed in.

Shay slid into the passenger seat. “You don’t think I should drive?”

“I need to do something with my hands other than kill someone.”

“You drive,” agreed Shay. “I like the way you drive. Very smooth. Very capable.”

I revved the engine and pulled out from the parking structure, up and away from the house, speeding out the driveway.

I glanced over at Shay. “Put your seatbelt on.”

“What about New York?” He held his iPhone to his ear and waited for Mia to answer her cell.

I willed her to answer.

My thoughts jumped ahead to the chaos my family and our senior executives were embroiled in right now. Henry would be on the way to LAX and I knew he’d come through, knew he had what it took to prevent those corporate bastards from decimating everything my Dad had dedicated his life to building.

He needed me right now, and I cursed the Herron brothers for wedging this time between us. The thought that one of them might have touched Mia made my skin crawl.

Shay gave a shake of his head as he left a message. “Mia. Pull over. We’re right behind you. We’re coming to get you.”

“Can you bring up the Beamer on your laptop?” I pointed to it.

“I’m on it.” He balanced his computer on his lap. “Do you want me to put an APB on her?”

“No, I don’t want the cops around when we get to the house.”

“And why is that?”

“They’re not friends, Shay. Mia wanted you to think that. She’s being blackmailed. At least that’s what it looks like.”

“By who?”

“Adrian Herron,” I said. “His brother Decker’s been working at Charlie’s.”

“The guy who killed her mom?”

“Yes.”

“How did you discover that?”

“In a roundabout way. Rebecca confirmed it when she sent me the list of current hires.”

He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, devastated.

“It’s not your fault,” I said. “It’s mine.”

“I’m your head of security, for God’s sake.”

“They saw a breech and took advantage.”

“You think they’re blackmailing Mia? What could they possibly have on her?”

“I’m sure her family history,” I said. “Knowing Mia, she’s been trying to handle it herself.”

“They must have seen a photo of you both together. Saw an opportunity.” He shook his head. “They probably asked for money from Mia with the promise of leaving you both alone after she paid up.”

“That abrasion on her neck...” I couldn’t say it.

He flinched. “The bastard took her collar by force.”

And I’d spanked her as a punishment and she’d still stayed quiet. Doing everything in her power to protect me, even from myself. She took that punishment I’d bestowed with an unmatched bravery.

I’d committed a monstrous act.

Self-hate welled in my gut.

Turning the corner, I sped up the driveway onto the 2.

“Mia has no idea these kind of bastards don’t go away,” I said. “They just keep upping the stakes.”

The freeway was wide open at least.

“I’ve got her.” He traced his finger on the screen. “She’s still on the 2 and twenty miles ahead.”

I shook my head to focus. “Once she’s out the car…”

“We won’t lose her.”

Navigating around the other vehicles, I sped over to the fast lane, averting my gaze from the glare of oncoming traffic from the other side of the freeway.

“What about your flight?” he said.

“I’m going to get my girl back. And then I’m going to drop a psychological nuclear bomb on those fuckers.”

“Who? The board or the Herron brothers?”

I clenched the steering wheel. “Both.”

The force of opening up the Bugatti to full speed propelled us back in our seats.

Mia was more than my lover, she was my life, and I was willing to do anything to save her.

Anything.
