They were brought back to reality when someone in the crowd cleared her throat. Crimson looked for the person who interrupted their very public private moment.

One of the elders of the tribe stepped forward.

“You have something to say, Mrs. Lucy?” Crimson addressed the woman in a guarded tone.

“Relax, child, I would just like to impart some elderly wisdom. This is not the first time circumstances have prevented a life partnered pair from fulfilling the code. Although it is tradition for the pair to fight against each other physically, the code dictates that a life partner must fight against the other to show strength of character and trust in each other. To me, the argument you just had fulfills the code. Sloan was willing to fight the woman he loved to stay with her and her tribe. Sloan trusted that you would not reject his claim to be your true life partner.”

Crimson was in shock. She didn’t know if she was understanding this right. “So you’re saying...”

“I’m saying if the rest of the tribe agrees that the code has been fulfilled, the gods will recognize you as true life partners,” Lucy stated with confidence and a smile on her face.

Crimson looked around her tribe, the family that surrounded her, and saw each and every one of them give a small nod, indicating that they supported her and Sloan as life partners. She turned back to Sloan with a smile big enough to split her face. She could see the overwhelming joy mirrored on his face.

Crimson pulled him in for another heat-filled kiss and could feel part of her energy flow into Sloan, the man she loved. He gasped as he felt her power infuse with his every cell.

“What just happened?”

“She didn’t tell you?” She gave her sister a pointed look before turning back to Sloan. “By being recognized as my true life partner, the gods have made you immortal.”

Still holding each other in a tight embrace, she started to feel a little nervous. How would Sloan react?

She didn’t have to wait long as he beamed a big smile down at her.

“Now there’s no way you’re leaving me behind.”

They both laughed, and the crowd cheered.

He was hers.
