SAM CATCHES JEFF: MASON’S POV

“Come on, Mason,” the girl purred and rubbed her rack against my chest. I took a deep breath, but not from enjoyment. This girl was drunk, too drunk, for anything to happen. I laid back on the bed, pissed that I had wasted my time. Logan said to get laid. He said it would be fun and what I needed to take the stick out of my ass.

Fuck him. A growl escaped me.

The girl gasped. She had crawled on top of me and straddled me. Mistaking my growl for a groan, she started humping me harder. Her hips constricted and stretched as she sped up her pace. Flashing me a smile as her hair fell to cover her face, she murmured, “Oh, baby. I'm going to make you feel so good.”

I was bored. And pisssed. And, as she rubbed over me harder and harder, I grunted. Okay, that did feel good. My hand went to her ass and cupped her there. She squealed from excitement, rubbing harder against me, more sensually. However, her grinding was sloppy, and she grunted more than I liked to hear from girls.

Maybe? I was tempted. Kate had been too possessive lately. She would hear about this chick and learn her lesson. She wouldn't be happy, but I wasn't her boyfriend. I wasn't anyone's boyfriend and had no intention to be one.

“Omph!” The girl fell off me. She caught herself, grabbing hold of the bed sheets, but the weight of her body tipped off balance and she slid to the floor.

It happened in slow motion. I could've caught her, but I made no move to grab her.

I was about to stand up, when she grabbed my hand. “Wait.”

“Listen,” I peered down at her.

She shook her head. Her lips were pressed together and she looked ready to puke. “No, no.” Scrambling back to her knees, she started pawing at my jeans. “Don't go. I'll blow you. You'll like it. I promise.”

“You're way too drunk.”

“I'm not.” She was pale in the face. I could almost smell the vomit ready to come up. It was only a matter of time.

“Look—” I started, but heard from the hallway, “Are you kidding me?”

“What—” The girl swung her head to the door. “Who was that?”

I didn't care. Logan was right. I needed to get laid, but not by this one. She was a mess. “Look,”
Fuck. What was her name?
I took hold of her arm and lifted her to her feet. “You need to find your friends—”

“You're my friend.” With one movement, she jerked her shirt down and her breasts sprung out. She wasn't wearing a bra, and as she licked her lips, gazing up at me, I wondered if she had come to the party with this plan already in her head. She rubbed her breasts against me and slid a hand down my chest, resting over the bulge in my pants. She cupped me, applying pressure with her palm as she whispered, “See? He's my friend.”

I removed her hand and smirked down at her. “I'm a guy. Don't get a big head. He springs up for no reason sometimes.”

Her eyes went flat and she pressed her lips together for a moment. I could see the thoughts flying through her head. She wanted to keep going. I could've said anything, and she would’ve countered with another move.

This chick wanted a boyfriend. I shook my head. I thought she was a screw 'em type of girl, one that was down for what I needed and would keep her mouth shut about it. It was now that I realized she wasn't. I would bet a hundred bucks she wanted to leave and announce to everyone we had screwed. Shit. I wasn't going to screw her, but she’d probably say something anyway.

I rolled my eyes. “Look, lady.”

“Lady.” She giggled, pressing her face into my chest so her laughter was muffled. Her hand began tickling my chest. She was trying to be seductive, but instead, she was annoying me. “Stop.” I caught her hands and pushed her away. When she tried to come back, I held her away from me. “Stop. You hear me?”

She did, but she was confused. Then anger filled her gaze.

I shook my head. “I don't do random hook-ups.”

“I know.” Her eyes lit up. “And don't worry. I can handle it.”

“Handle it?”

“Being your girl—”

“Do not say girlfriend. You are not my girlfriend.”

Her shoulders dropped. A hurt expression came over her.

“I will not have a girlfriend and you're not going to tell your friends we screwed up here. You got that?”

“What's going to stop me?”

“Me.” I'd been nice to her. That was over. I let her see that I was pissed. As she did, she took a step back. I narrowed my eyes at her. “I'm sick of being used to up someone's social status, so if you breathe one lie about what happened up here, I will come for you or I'll let Kate have at you.”

Fear flashed in her gaze.

I hated using Kate as a weapon, but it was the truth. Kate kept quiet. She'd been more nuts than normal lately, but she could be ruthless if I allowed it. I'd allow it this time. I held a hand up. “No lies. That's all I'm saying.”

She nodded and swallowed thickly.

Then we heard again from the hallway, “You were making out with another girl!”

The girl's lip started quivering and she whimpered. “I thought you liked me.”

“You're drunk.”

“I know, but I thought you really liked me. We danced—”

“You came over and started grinding on my leg.”

“I did?”

I nodded, then sighed. “Look, you can hook-up with my brother. I'll put in a good word for you.”

“Really?” Her eyes lit up.

For fuck's sake. I'd give Logan the full down low on her, but he wouldn't care. He liked blow jobs. Everyone knew that. I nodded. “Yeah. Let's get out of here, okay. No lies, remember?”

She made an exaggerated motion of zipping her lips and throwing away the key. That was what she meant, but she hit her nose, didn't know it, and almost fell as she threw away the imaginary key. I caught her around the waist and held her up. Then I ushered her out, but stopped as I saw Sam.

She was talking to a guy. His back was to me, but it was obvious the douche thought he was hot shit. I was tempted to step forward. I didn't. I wanted to see how she handled him. She had balls of steel. I saw it in her at the gas station and she'd proved me right so far. How would she handle this?

“I know it looks bad.”

I wanted to grin. His pants were undone and his shirt was off. The guy got caught. I wished Logan could watch this guy grovel. He'd have a few jokes for him.

Sam stiffened. “Are you dense?”

Drunk Girl had leaned back against my chest. She was content to watch this live entertainment. Fine by me. She wouldn't go off to her friends and say something she'd regret later. As we listened, the douche blamed Sam for his cheating, then started to grovel. I couldn't hold back my smirk when he started with promises of how much he loved her. Wait... As I listened, I heard the guy take a different path.

Glaring, he snapped at her, glaring, “Why don't you get off your high horse? Fine, we're done. I'm not even going to kiss your ass. It hasn't done me a damn thing in the three years we've been dating or the two it took me to get you. I can be half the nice guy I am to you, and I've got no problem getting panties to drop.”

He had more to say. My eyes narrowed to slits and anger had started in me. This guy was a dick. He expected things. I'd seen it so many damn times and I hated these guys, every single time I saw one show himself. They expected things when they were nice.

Sensing my anger, Drunk Girl lifted her head from my chest and frowned at me.

My jaw firmed. She expected things too. Guy or girl, I hated people like that. They did something nice and had strings attached. When they pulled on those strings and their expected prize wasn't attached, they got angry.

My hand jerked beside me. I'd seen enough adults like him, like the girl in front of me, to know how they'd be when they grew up. They'd ruin lives. Shit. They'd ruin their kids' lives. That's what they'd do, just like my fucking parents.

Then the dick spat out, “You're just some high class bitch that ain't high class, Sam.”

I'd been holding back. I couldn't anymore. Sam might've been able to handle him fine, even though she was the idiot who dated him in the first place, but I was growing tired of holding myself back. I started to move the girl in front of me to the side, but Sam was talking to him again. She flashed me a warning. Fine. I held back, but I wasn't going to wait for long.

“I know that you've been cheating on me. Even my mother knew.”

“That makes you look like a fool.”

“Maybe. Or maybe I didn't give a crap.” She lifted her chin in a challenge.

As she did, I felt a flare of pride. I saw those balls of steel come out again. Maybe… Then her ex-moron spilled the beans. He'd been fucking one of her friends. She moved back as if he had slapped her.

He kept going, “I'd be up here with her now if she wasn't so obsessed with Kade. Ever since the car bombing, it's all either of them talk about. I told her to get straight. The Kade brothers are going down. They set fire to those cars. The cops have to know—”

The girl in front of me looked up. He was talking about me. He was done. He just didn't know it. I started forward again, then Sam yelled at him, “Shut up. You don't know a thing about it. I was there. I was outside, so you don't know anything. Jessica and Lydia were inside. They didn't see a thing. They were wasted that night.”

I should've stepped in and set the guy straight. I didn't. I couldn't look away from Sam. She looked ready to collapse on her feet, but there was fire in the depths of her eyes. She was defying him. She lifted her eyes to me and the challenge was there for me at the same time. She wasn't just dealing with him. Her message was to me too.

She wasn't normal. I had thought it before, but I knew it for sure. Sam wasn't like the rest. She was different. And at that thought, I frowned. An emotion bubbled to the surface, one I didn't recognize or like.

Then she slapped him. She delivered a last look at me after she did it and then she stalked away.

“Well, then,” the girl murmured in front of me, giggling. “That's not messy at all.”

Her ex whirled around and his eyes widened.

I narrowed mine at him and shook my head. “Your girl, right there, just saved your ass from getting a beat down.”

He tried to puff up his chest, but he couldn't. Instead, he eyed me with caution. His face was already red from her slap.

I grunted. Good boy. He kept quiet. “You're an asshole and an idiot. You just cheated on the one girl that's not like the others.”

He grew thoughtful, but he knew what I meant. There was one girl that all the guys wanted, one girl that wasn't like the rest, and one girl that every guy could search a lifetime for. That was Samantha. I knew it now and so did he. As he continued to watch me, I shook my head and smirked at him.

He knew that I knew it was too late. He'd never get her back, not when I knew too.

He flushed, reading my thoughts, and I laughed at him before I went downstairs. The girl followed me. Logan was in the kitchen and I handed her to him. I took his beer at the same time and said, “She wanted me to put in a good word for her, but she's too drunk. She's a mess. I'd stay away from this one.”

He lifted his hand and moved back from her.

She gasped and glared at me. “Jerk.”

As she shoved off into the crowd, I shrugged. I'd been called much worse and I had no doubt that I would again.

LOGAN’S POV

I stopped outside of Sam’s room when I heard her on the phone. “My mom said something about dinner too.”

I caught myself from laughing. My new soon-to-be-stepsister was a liar. Shit. Not a very good one either. I started listing off ways to teach her in my head when she said further, “I don’t know. I’m not sure what I should do. I might still go and cheer for Adam tonight.”

The list stopped when I heard that. She was going to cheer for that golden poser? Fuck your brothers in the ass backwards while you’re at it, honey. Adam Quinn’s high school glory days were going to be demolished. He’d been strutting around, making too many damn proclamations against Mason and me. If he thought we wouldn’t hear that shit, he was going to learn differently tonight. The girls never heard that crap. It was all within the bro universe. As Sam made another pathetic excuse to whoever was stupid enough to believe her, I shook my head.

She didn’t know it, but she was part of my weapon to take Quinn down. Then it was quiet and I’d assumed she hung up. I couldn’t leave now. I hadn’t intended to head in there, but fun was fun and Sam was strung like a violin. I could play sweet music when I plucked at some of her strings.

When I entered her room, I saw she was still on the phone. She motioned for me to leave. My grin widened. Fuck no, sweet cheeks. Who could walk away from playing with her? She flushed with anger; she was pissed at me. I held my laugh inside, but it was rippling through me. Messing with Sam brought me sweet enjoyment. I didn’t think it was legal.

I headed inside anyway.

Her eyes widened.

It was only a matter of time before she ended her call.  Realizing I wasn’t going to leave, she tried to get off the phone. A smug feeling settled inside of me. I had called that right. Mason said she was different. He was right, but I wasn’t going to figure her out. That was all him. My job was to play with her. I went over and breathed on her neck. She squirmed away, hanging up without saying goodbye.

She whirled around. “What are you doing?”

I smirked at her. What did she think? I was playing.

“This is my room. You’re invading my privacy. Get out.”

I laughed. “You’re just pissed because one of your friends could’ve heard me.”

“Do you blame me?”

“Nah, guess not.” Still laughing, I walked to the bed and plopped down. She was strung so tight. I wanted to shake her. Didn’t she know we weren’t a secret that would stay buried? “So you’re coming tonight? You going to the game to cheer on your future brothers?”

She froze and her eyes grew heated. “Don’t say that word.”

“Brothers?” Shit. She did think our situation could be kept secret. In this crowd, secrets never lasted. I pressed my head into her pillow from laughing outright. “I cnn’t beliff ith.”

“Come on. Get out. I want to go for a run.”

She reached for my hand, but I batted her away and then threw out a challenge. “You should run with Mason sometime.” She thought she was the best. She probably was, but I’d still mess with her head.

“What?”

“You should run with Mason sometime.” Oh yeah. She didn’t like that idea. She was holding her breath. One pluck, another string for me to stretch out. I was waiting for her reaction. Please give me more. I wasn’t ready to leave yet.

“What do you mean by that?”

“He runs too, most of the time it’s during practice, but I bet he’d smoke you.”

“You think so?”

No, Sam. You can’t play back with me. You’re not good enough. “I know so.”

“I can run for hours.”

I shrugged. “So can he.”

“I’m not going to get into this with you.”

I wanted to groan. She was giving up this fast? For real? My dad did a better job at withstanding my games than she did. “What? That Mason’s better than you at running?” She was going to leave, but I blocked her. “Why don’t the two of you throw down? I’d like to see that.”

She pushed past me. “I’m not going to race, either of you.”

“Scared?” It was a hunch, but I threw it out anyway. When she froze, I knew I was right. This was another string to pluck. It seemed like she was scared of everything that was living.

“We didn’t have it great, Logan, but can you imagine growing up with that bitch as a mom?’ Mason had told me earlier in the week. ‘I’m surprised the girl’s still alive. She’s strong inside.”

I hadn’t believed him.

He shook his head at me then. My eyes narrowed now. I didn’t see it, but maybe... Mason read people better than me. She turned around, heated, and I noticed it now. Fuck. Why was Mason always right?

She demanded, “What did you say?”

“You heard me. I think you’re scared.” I saw she wasn’t, not about everything.

“Come again?”

This game got fun again. She had stood up to me, and now she was challenging me. I said it anyway, “I think you’re scared of losing.”

“I wouldn’t lose.”

I moved so I was close, breathing down on her. The girl stood her ground. Again. Oh yes, I was really starting to like this girl. “I think you’re scared of everything.”

A primal look flashed in her eyes and she shoved me back. “I’m not afraid of anything.”

I laughed. “Whatever you tell yourself at night.” I could see through her. Mason showed me a window into her and I tested the boundary. She came back snarling at me. She was scared, but he was right. There was more in her. A lot more.

“I mean it.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was my reminder to get to the school. “See you, sister. Have a good one tonight.” I left the door open behind me. As I headed down the hallways, I listened if she would do anything, say anything, maybe even cry. Nothing. There was complete silence.

I paused at the stairs before heading down.

Goddamn. Mason was right. This girl was intriguing.
