The Next Day
Detective Stern wasn’t the only one that was happy to have the case closed. Chloe was relieved as could be. She gave Daisy a huge hug.
“I can’t thank you enough,” Chloe said.
“What was I supposed to do, let my friend go to jail for a crime she didn’t commit?” Daisy replied.
“That’s exactly what would have happened if it weren’t for you Daisy. You really saved my bacon.”
“You know you can’t mention bacon around me without making my mouth water.”
“Why don’t I treat you?” Chloe suggested.
“To some bacon?” Daisy asked.
“Lunch,” Chloe clarified. “It’s the least I can do after what you’ve done for me.”
“You don’t have to ask me twice. I’m not one to turn down a free meal.”
“Besides, part of me is trying to salvage the rest of the weekend. This isn’t exactly how I expected things to turn out when I invited you to town for my book launch.”
“Look on the bright side, now you have plenty of fodder for a new book.”
“Yeah. I could call it ‘Too Close To Home’,” Chloe joked.
“Or, ‘The Killer Party’,” Daisy added.
Chloe laughed. “Speaking of my book, I have some good news.”
“What is it?”
“A reporter called me up fascinated by the fact that a decorator detective solved this case. They’re going to run a story about you. And since the main character of my book is based on you, it’s going to mean huge publicity.”
“That’s great. I hope you get killer sales out of it,” Daisy joked.
“That’s some deadly pun.”
“What can I say? Some jokes slay more than others.”
Chloe smiled. “So true. I’ll say this though, next time I invite you up to Vancouver, I hope we can go the whole weekend without someone dying.”
“I don’t know. Those are pretty lofty expectations. What’s next, are you going to tell me you don’t want another police detective coming to your door?” Daisy deadpanned.
“That’s exactly what I’m saying. Unless of course he’s handsome, single, and here to pick me up for a date,” Chloe replied.
Daisy smiled.
Before Daisy headed back home, she had one last person to say goodbye to.
“I’ll give you this, you sure know how to make a weekend interesting,” Addison said.
“Don’t remind me. I need a vacation from this vacation,” Daisy replied.
“Maybe you can schedule a little staycation when you get back home.”
“Tell you what. Why don’t we do a little spa weekend next time you’re back in town?”
“Consider it done. Although with the way the record company is talking now, Jeff and I might have some busy months ahead of us.”
“I take it the record company enjoyed your song then,” Daisy said.
Addison couldn’t contain her smile. “They loved it. They’ve offered to sign us to their label.”
Daisy’s jaw dropped. “Oh my goodness. That’s fantastic.”
Addison clutched her chest. “I know. I can hardly believe it. I don’t think it has really sunk in yet. I mean, this is a dream come true.”
“Maybe the McDare family luck is finally turning around.”
“I think it is.”
“Well, you deserve it. You’re going to be a big success,” Daisy insisted.
“By the looks of it, you’re turning into quite a big star yourself,” Addison said.
Daisy was confused. “What do you mean?”
“There’s already a book written about you, and I’m sure there will be another one on the way. Before you know it, you’ll be a world famous decorator detective.”
“Here’s hoping I get a lot more decorating jobs than detective work.”
“I’m thinking you’re going to get a little bit of both,” Addison said.
“In that case, I’m going to need a spa weekend more than ever,” Daisy admitted.
After the weekend Daisy had, home never looked so good. The minute she arrived back in Cozy Creek, she stopped off at Gavin’s house. A big smile was on his face. That wasn’t the only warm welcome she received. Shamus, her trusty West Highland Terrier, was bouncing around like he hadn’t seen Daisy in months. Daisy gave Shamus a slew of hugs and pets, then was ready to lounge on the couch with Gavin and catch up on their weekends.
Gavin had other plans. He wanted to take a walk. Daisy was game. She just cared about spending time with Gavin. It didn’t really matter what they did, just that they were together.
The whole way over to the dog park, Gavin was unexpectedly jittery. He was friendly and conversational of course, but there was a layer of nerves underneath it all. That was perplexing to Daisy, because she didn’t have the slightest clue what had put him so on edge.
When they got to the park, Daisy couldn’t hold her tongue any longer. The time for small talk was over. She needed to cut to the heart of the matter.
“Gavin, what’s going on?” Daisy asked.
“We’re just taking a nice little walk through the park,” Gavin answered.
Daisy shook her head. “No, that’s not all. There’s something else at play. Do you want to tell me what it is?”
“Do you realize where we are right now?”
Daisy nodded. “The park.”
“True, but it’s also where we first met. Do you remember that day?”
Daisy smiled. “It was love at first sight…for our dogs.”
“Yeah. It took us a little longer to fall in love, but boy did we ever.”
“I don’t usually enjoy trips down memory lane, but I’m really liking this one.”
“The trip is far from over.”
“I guess being apart this weekend made you a little nostalgic.”
“It did more than that,” Gavin admitted.
“What else did it do?” Daisy wondered.
“It made me realize how much I love you. How much you mean to me. How I hate being apart from you.”
“I really missed you this weekend too.”
“This isn’t just about this weekend. It’s about the rest of my life. I know what I want, now more than ever before.”
“And what would that be?” Daisy asked.
“You. Daisy, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me. Every day I fall in love with you a little more. I can’t imagine my life without you. So I’ve brought you here to the spot where we first met to take our relationship to the next level.”
Gavin then pulled a square-shaped box out of his pocket and got down on one knee. Of all the surprises that had been thrown at Daisy this weekend, this was by far the most unexpected. She was tired from the drive back, dulling her instincts somewhat. Because of that, she didn’t see this coming.
Gavin then opened the box, revealing a diamond ring. “So I just have one question for you right now. Daisy McDare, will you marry me?”
It took all of Daisy’s energy to keep her jaw from dropping. Daisy had a tendency to think things to death. To overanalyze them. To get lost in her thoughts. Not this time.
In that moment, there was no hesitation. She knew her answer after he finished the question.
“Yes. Of course I’ll marry you!” Daisy exclaimed.
Gavin smiled wide, then sprung up and gave Daisy a long, deep kiss.
Gavin had kissed Daisy many times before, but never like this. What she was experiencing now was the kiss of a man who knew who he was going to spend the rest of his life with. It nearly took Daisy’s breath away.
When they finally pulled back, they were in their own little world. It was like the whole rest of the universe had melted away around them. All that mattered in that moment was each other.
“You’ve just made me the happiest man in the world,” Gavin said.
Daisy smiled. “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”
As Daisy and Gavin gazed into each other’s eyes, one thing became abundantly clear—their lives would never be the same.
