Maria was still in the hospital. Patti and Jamie had everyone saying prayers on her behalf every day.
Layla was in a secure location, but Jamie had offered a safe haven for both Maria and Layla once everything settled down.
Raymond was dead, but the FBI couldn’t guarantee there might not be others out there looking for revenge.
A hand touched hers. She clasped it and looked up into Carter’s sparkling green eyes.
She squeezed his hand and smiled up at him.
“Come on. Let’s get to the beach before the fireworks start.”
Patti looked up at the ever-darkening sky. Stars were beginning to twinkle along the dusky horizon. She stood up and they walked hand in hand.
He stopped and turned her towards him just before they reached the beach gate. He took her in his arms and she smiled up at him. His lips touched hers, soft and sweet. He was a man to be trusted. He’d proven that to her in ways no man ever had.
She leaned closer and kissed him back.
The earth shook as fireworks filled the night sky.
As they separated, he looked at her with that charming smile. “Now that’s what I call a kiss.”
“Hopefully, the first of many.”
He hugged her close.
She closed her eyes, savoring the moment.
