Jenna picked up the phone to hear Mike’s deep voice, “Hey babe, I’m really sorry, but I have to pull a double, I can’t make it to dinner.”

“It’s our anniversary though.”  everything okay?”  Jeff a

“Yeah, but the hospital needs me tonight, I can’t leave them shorthanded.”

“I know I’m just being selfish wanting to spend some time with you.”

“I’ll make it up to you I promise.  So do you want to know what your present is?”  He laughed.

“No Mike I can wait.”   Though she had an idea what it might be, she would rather be surprised.

“Hey.”

“Yeah.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too Mike.  Have a good night at work.”  She hung up the phone and walked over to the couch.  “Damn now those reservations are for nothing.”  She had gotten them a table at one of Tucson’s top restaurants and had hoped to go.

She sat thinking back to three years ago when she had first met Mike.  It had been at some party that was for a bunch of up and rising stars in the area.  He had come up to her, looking very handsome in his white tux.

“Hi, so tell me are you here for the party?”  He had said his deep voice filling her ears with warmth.

“No, is this a party?”  She had asked him back.

It was then that he smiled a huge smile and laughed so loud that many people turned around to see what the two were doing.  She noticed that he had the cutest dimples on his cheeks, his teeth were whiter than white, and she loved the sound of his laugh.

She took in the full package estimating him at about 6’1”, dark black hair, beautiful blue eyes that just sparkled so much.  He looked like a doctor to her, and funny thing was, that’s exactly what he was.

“I’m Mike Davis; it’s nice to find someone with a humor.”  He put out his hand to shake hers.  It swallowed hers up like a tiny fruit on a tree.

“I’m Jenna Upshaw, and I know what you mean there aren’t many people in here who like to joke.”

“Must be a room full of lawyers.”  He had cracked.

Jenna had laughed heartily, “and why do you say that?”

“They have absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever.”

“Oh I see, so I take it you’re not a lawyer, what do you do?”  She inquired.

“I’m a doctor at Desert Memorial.”

“Yeah you look like a doctor.”

“What about you, has to be something exciting?”

“Yeah it sure is I’m a lawyer.”

He coughed on his drink almost choking.  “Oh hey, sorry about the joke.”

“It’s okay I know them all!”

As the night progressed they continued talking and pretty much ignored most of the other people at the party.  Many times they would break into laughter that would draw stares from those around them.  But neither of them cared, it was at the end of the night as they were walking out that he asked if he could call her sometime.

“So can I have your number Jenna Upshaw?”

“Well I guess so Mike Davis.”

As Mike hung up the phone he laughed, “Man that is just so darn easy.”

“Hey there.”  He heard the sultry voice say lowly.

“Well if it’s not my favorite nurse, Nurse Jenkins.”  His eyes roamed over her well endowed body.

“Yes it is and I see my favorite doctor, and he looks awfully happy for some reason.”

“I got the night free, told Jenna I was pulling a double.”

She jumped up and down, “Oh goody, I know what I want to do.”

He grabbed her and squeezed her tightly.  “I know what I’m going to do to you!”  He growled.

Mike looked at Nurse Nancy Jenkins and his blood boiled hot.  It wasn’t just the fact that she had a body that would kill, but that she was willing to have some fun.  Jenna wanted to wait until they were married to make love as she called it.  But to Mike he just wanted to be able to have sex for the fun of it.  Nancy was a beauty, but Mike knew that if he played around too much she would become attached.  And well Mike wasn’t looking for an attachment with a nurse that worked in his hospital.

“Hey so what do you want to eat lover boy?”  Nancy broke into his thoughts.

“Well I could have you!!”  Mike said with a devilish grin.

“Yes you can, oh I guess we can just eat food later.”  She began to drag him into the bedroom.

Mike’s thoughts went back to Jenna for a second, and he almost felt guilty about this.  But it wasn’t his first time sleeping with another woman while they had been dating.  So like normal he just focused on this lover for now.

If only Jenna would have been a little more lenient on the having sex subject, but she had grown up being taught you shouldn’t have sex before your married.  No wonder her other boyfriends from the past never lasted too long.

The phone rang taking Jenna from her thoughts, and she jumped to answer it.  “Hello.”

“Hey how ya doing tonight?”

“Oh it’s you.”

“Well thanks for being so excited to talk to me.”

“I’m sorry Jeff, I’m always happy to talk to you.  I had only hoped it was Mike calling and telling me he could get off tonight.”

“The good doctor is working on this special day.  Doctor’s what can you do with them!”  Jeff chuckled.

“Yeah sometimes he’s just too dedicated I think.”

Jeff Zest was an old friend of Jenna’s they had grown up on farms outside the city limits, and even dated in the past.  He was her best friend, and one that she would always be able to talk too.

“So what are you going to do tonight?”

“Nothing, waste of the reservations.”

“Well we can go so you don’t waste them, I have no plans.”

“OK, sure that sounds good.”

“Alright what time were they for?”

“Seven.”

“Get ready and I’ll come and get you.”

“Okay see you in a bit.”

“Bye.”  Jeff hung up the phone.

“Mike just doesn’t know what he’s missing out on.”  Jeff said to his dog Rufus.  She looked at him as she almost understood what he was saying.

Jeff knew that he shouldn’t really be going out tonight with Jenna.  His feelings for her had never really ended over the years.  He couldn’t even really remember why they had ended it in high school, but he had.  He thought back to when he first met that little freckled girl the day they moved in next door.  He didn’t really like girls back then, but she was one hell of a tomboy to hang around with.  They became fast friends, and it had progressed to more for a little bit.

But as they got older and he became a star player on the football team he had so many girls who wanted to date him.  Girls he knew would let him experiment.  Instead of listening to his heart, he’d listened to another part of his body.

He had regretted it for years as him and Jenna continued to be friends.  He had wanted to ask her out again, but was just scared to do so.  Now she had been with Mike for three years, and he knew they were planning on marrying.  But there was still something he couldn’t pinpoint about Mike and why he didn’t like him.

Jenna went to get ready; she was going to wear the new dress she had bought for tonight anyway.  Even if Mike wasn’t going to see it, she didn’t want to wear anything else but that.  She smiled while thinking of Jeff; he was such a good friend.

She thought back to when her family had first moved into that house next door to Jeff’s family.  He was a little scrawny kid of eight.  She had been the same age so that wasn’t a problem, and he liked doing all the things she did too.

Remembering how they had slowly become attracted to each other as they got older.  The first time he asked her out, he had been so nervous he could barely talk.  But when he finally got the question out, she didn’t hesitate in saying yes.

For many years they had been going in that way, and she was glad he’d finally asked.  Though when they got into high school it had all changed.  Almost too quickly to really notice what was happening.  He was a good lucky guy than, and still was, but he had chosen to break up so he could head out to greener pastures.

Jenna knew that her decision to wait for marriage before she had sex would cost her in the long run.  But she continued to stand by that decision still.  Not that she hadn’t thought about just giving in many times.  But she knew she should wait and continued to do so.

As she finished getting ready, the doorbell rang, it would be Jeff.  She went to get the door, and met Jeff, who’s mouth dropped open.

“Wow Jenna you look simply stunning!”

“Oh thanks, this was the dress I bought for tonight.”

“It’s beautiful on you, of course you are the main reason it looks so good.”

Feeling a bit flustered, Jenna said, “you ready to go?”

“Sure, all the guys are going to be jealous of me tonight!”

“Stop making me blush Jeff.”  She laughed.

“Hey I can't help it your the one who asked me to take you out tonight.  Mike's the one who didn't stand up to the hospital bosses and tell them, hell no.”  Jeff told her.

“I know Jeff, but he can't or they won't, hell I don't know, sometimes I just think he loves his job more than me.”  She admitted to Jeff.

“Well, I'm not really sure what to tell you Jenna.  But I can tell you that this night would not be a night I would work late if I was with you.  I'd tell them I'm off and that's it.  He's been there long enough he should be able to take time off when he needs it.”  Jeff commented.

“Let's not talk about him all night.  Your here to take me out and to cheer me up right?”  Jenna asked.

“Yes ma'am.  Jeff, the knight in shining armor at your service.  I'll do anything you want and won't charge you a dime.”  Jeff smiled, it was disarming to Jenna, she had forgotten how cute Jeff was, and just how charming he was too.

He held out his arm and she put her arm through it, leading her out the door, Jeff figured he might as well make the most of any chance he had with Jenna.  Before Mike walked her down that aisle and made her his wife, well, he wouldn't steal her from him.  But he wouldn't charm her and let her know just how special she was to him either.

Mike looked down at Nancy Jenkins, he'd just finished having sex with her.  He had told his girlfriend that he was working late.  Hell this was work in a way.  He felt no guilt whatsoever about what he was doing, she was the one who wouldn't spread her legs for him.

“No I want to wait for marriage.”  He'd heard her say way too many times.
