“Ladies,” Grandpa Howe says, extending his hand to
the open area where people are already starting to shake around.

“Don’t mind if I do.” Grandma Tess takes his arm. “Girls, maybe you should run up to the DJ booth and see if she’ll play us ‘The Hustle.’ I bet we could get the whole room going.” She winks and fluffs her hair as Grandpa Howe twirls her out into the crowd.

Cassie and I head over to make our request, but we ask for a couple of our own favorites, too. We’ve been sharing our music in the car since we left Maine, and it’s been fun learning new things from her and seeing her enjoy my collection, as well. Pretty much everything we do now is better when we do it together, I think, as we start bouncing around to the music, making crazy faces. And I know even when we get back home, we’ll find ways to keep having fun. Together, we’ll figure out Cassie’s careful truce with Fiona, my mom’s long recovery, and anything else that comes our way. We’ll send texts and write postcards, and whenever we can, beg for visits.

Under the swirling lights, bopping with my cousin and my grandparents, a sparkling buzzy happiness fills my chest. I know that our trip is slowly coming to an end, but the long adventure between Cassie and me is just getting started.
