Sapphire stood up and went to the bathroom. She’d been doing that a lot lately, and he knew why. She missed her grandmother. And now with his dad being married, it was bringing it all home again. Dad had been with her when she’d passed, and Sapphire felt closer to him for that.

After the dinner was over, Blair and his dad went out to the deck. The other men were out there, but he moved to the corner where they could be alone. His dad spoke before he could ask him what he wanted.

“I know that you and Sapphire are breeding again. I’m so happy for you, son.” He nodded and watched as Thad and Jul played catch with his son. “I guess you’ll be wanting us to move out.”

“No.” His dad looked at him, and Blair realized how loud he’d been. “Please don’t leave us. Sapphire has been upset for days thinking you’d want your own place. And she and Celeste have been bawling over the dumbest things to take out of here. If you leave here and take Celeste, I think it’ll be like losing her grandmother all over.”

“I don’t want to go.” His dad looked over at the garden, at rest now at the end of the season. “I still plant the tomatoes too close, and I can’t get a straight row to save my life. If I leave here…well, hell son, I don’t want to go. I’m having too much fun with that boy of yours. Did you know that he talks to her?”

“He just told me. And I think he talks to Annabelle, the baby, too.” His dad nodded, still staring at the garden. “Dad, please don’t leave us. We need you.”

“I’m not going nowhere. I’m here for as long and you’ll have me.”

Blair did something he’d not done in years. He pulled his dad to him and hugged him. Tears threatened again, and he let them go. He didn’t even care that his entire family saw him. Blair knew as surely as he was standing there that nothing would come between him and his family.
