“Yeah, it was too bad he and Eleanor couldn’t make it. I totally would have invited you, but ….”

“No, I just came by to—” He looked beyond me to the cars driving toward us on the road. He seemed frustrated.

“What?”

“Why didn’t you say anything to Uncle Bill about those emails I found on Marty’s system?”

I’d totally forgotten about that. “What was the point?”

“I should have caught that,” he said, looking down.

“I guess you’re not the suspicious type.” I wasn’t just referring to Marty, and the shake of his head told me he knew that.

Guy turned his attention back to me. “I don’t know about you, but I didn’t get to say everything I wanted to say to you that day.”

Great. So he didn’t come back to profess his love for me. He needed to vent more about what a liar I was.

“So go ahead.” My voice turned defensive. “What did you want to say?”

“You really frustrate me sometimes, you know?”

“That’s the big important thing you needed to say?”

“No.” He took in a deep breath. “You made me feel pretty shitty, especially that night in Vegas.”

Damn
. Guilt took over when defensive hit the road.

“Do you know how pissed I was at myself that night? How guilty I felt every time I was around you?”

I shook my head.

“How horribly sad and guilty I felt for falling in love with a married woman?”

“I’m sorry.”
Wait. Falling in love
? “Did you just say—”

“Yeah, I did. And even though you were too dumb and too chicken to tell me, I know you feel the same.”

My eyes grew wide at his boldness, not to mention his accuracy. His anger didn’t seem to have a solid foundation, but I couldn’t be sure. The only thing I did know for sure was that his attempt at it was incredibly sexy. That didn’t stop my insulted ego from responding.

“Dumb? And chicken?”

“Yeah!” he said with a firm head nod.

“Is that all?”

“No.” His hands reached out to my face, pulling me instantly toward him. And just like that night in my hotel room, his lips came feathery close to mine. He hesitated and pulled back the slightest bit, setting in motion a swirl of heat in my stomach. His eyes found mine and squinted with a gleam that made those spectacular gold specks sparkle under the setting sun. Then his lips met mine and my heart dropped so fast I thought I would faint. He slipped one arm around my waist, pulled me into a firm grasp against his solid frame. My arms couldn’t get around his neck fast enough. I held him so tight, I never wanted to let go.

Just when I thought my heart couldn’t take any more of that intense kiss, two long, loud whistles sounded behind me. We both turned our heads, still locked into each other’s arms. Lou stood at the doorway to the bar, gave one short whistle, and waved us over. I laughed, and Guy stifled it with another long, heart-melting kiss. After a moment I pulled away.

“I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough to tell you.”

“It’s okay. I’ll figure out a way for you to make it up to me.”

As we walked back to the bar, arm in arm, I knew that for the first time in my life I didn’t have a plan. But I wasn’t worried. I was pretty sure Guy had one for the both of us.
