A black raven with wings spread wide between his shoulder blades, the words Fallen Idols scrawling through them in beautiful script. His back arched as I touched it.

“Does it hurt here?” I whispered, gently testing the area near his kidneys.

“No.” His voice was low and husky. “Not at all.”

I moved my fingers up to where his liver was. A tiny moan escaped his mouth as I touched him.
Oh my God! He’s as turned on as I am!
“How about here?” He winced slightly, and the yellowish discoloration under the skin told me he might need an ultrasound to make sure there was no blood in his liver. I’d need to run a few blood tests as well.

I made my way around to the other side of the bed, and became face to face with him. “I’ll probably need to run a few tests,” I explained, ignoring the pull between us.

“Does that mean I’ll have to stay here longer?” His hand reached up, grabbing my hip, and pulled me slightly closer. I didn’t even try to fight it.

“Yes,” I breathed.

“Then, I’m all yours.”

We were inches apart now, his warm breath like a caress on my skin. I wanted to melt against him.

“Ms. Paige?” Wally called from across the room. “I think my IV is done.”

Wally’s voice was like a bucket of ice water being poured on me. I shoved myself back, pushing my shirt back down as I stared at my shoes, too mortified to look up. What the hell was I thinking? I could get fired for this. If anyone found out, I
would
be fired.

A shiver ran down my body. “I have to go check on him.”

I forced myself to walk away, practically running to the office where I headed straight for the mini-fridge, sticking my entire head inside. “I can’t believe I’m behaving this way. Stupid! Stupid!” I chided.

AXEL

I scrubbed my hands down my face as I watched Paige practically run from me. I fucked this up. Came on way too strong. But, fuck, if she wasn’t the epitome of sex on a stick. Long fuckin’ legs that went on for miles, just beggin’ to be wrapped around my waist as I fucked her hard against a wall. Long, red hair that brushed against those perky breasts that I swear were screaming at me to take them into my mouth.

I mean, I didn’t even know her full name. Not that something trivial like that had ever stopped me in the past, but she wasn’t just some club whore. She was a professional, just trying to do her job, and I took advantage of that.

I could hear her now with that old timer, apologizing for the delay, and asking how he was doing. She didn’t dismiss him or treat him like a second-class citizen because he was locked up. I watched her through a gap in the curtain. She laughed at his jokes, and was sweet with him as she held his hand, guiding him slowly out of the infirmary once she finished. It made me realize that I wanted to know more about her.

She took a slow, deep breath before making her way back to me, shirtless and still hard as fuck, on the cold, metal gurney. At least I wasn’t lookin’ like a pansy in one of those paper gowns.

“Mr. Cook. I’ll have you out of here, and back to yard time in just a few moments. I’ll need a urine sample, and to take some blood work, but as far as the rib, there’s nothing I can do for that besides give you some ibuprofen.”

She never let her eyes meet mine. Instead, she stared intensely at the tablet in front of her, as she pulled out a plastic cup from her pocket. I wanted to talk to her, find out more about her, but she was completely shut down. Obviously she felt guilty about what almost happened earlier, and was trying to be professional, but I needed more.

“Paige,” I tried.

She shook her head defiantly. “No. We’re not talking about it. We’re not discussing it in any way, and we are never, ever repeating it. It was a mistake. A horrible mistake. Now, go pee in that cup, so I can finish, and you can leave.”

I didn’t say anything else. I honestly didn’t know what to say. Growing up in the life, women always threw themselves at me. I never had to work to get a girl. And the girls I did get were nothing like her. They only cared about themselves, and bragging to their friends that they got to get with me, be my old lady, even just for a night. Status was their priority.

Looking up at her face to gauge her reaction, I reached forward to take the cup, letting my forefinger gently graze her wrist, sliding down her hand slowly before circling her fingertips.

Upon first contact, her eyes slid shut, as a small shiver ran down her body. The look on her face was one of mixed emotions, like an internal battle raged. As my finger skimmed down her own, she rocked slightly on her heels, her head tilting back ever so slightly, exposing her neck.

That sealed it for me. She may not want to admit it, but she was just as affected by me as I was of her. And while I admit this was no where close to the ideal circumstances, there was no way I was letting this—whatever it was—go between us without a fight.

“I’ll be right back,” I told her, before hopping down, the pain from my ribs not even registering. “And Paige?” I purposefully stood just inches from her, forcing her to meet my eyes. “We won’t talk about it now, but meeting you was by no means a mistake. In fact, it might make getting arrested worth every single day I spend here.”

The next day, as I touched my glued stitches, I thought about Paige. Truth be told, I hadn’t stopped thinking about Paige. I needed to see her again. I’d already checked to make sure she was working, and what shift. While I wish that I could throw her on the back of my Fat Boy while wining and dining her, but getting her alone to talk in the prison infirmary would just have to do for now.

I took a deep breath and steadied myself. This was going to hurt. Aiming one last time before I closed my eyes, I rammed my head into the corner of the bedpost, immediately feeling the warm blood seeping down my face.  Yep, that oughta do it.

“Guard!” I called, before dizziness overtook me. “I’m pretty sure I need these stitches looked at again.”

PAIGE

“I’m sorry, but I can’t give you anything stronger than Ibuprofen. All narcotics have to be prescribed by the doctor, and he’s not in for three more days.”

The patient, a nineteen-year-old tweaker in for multiple drug charges, wasn’t deterred. “But, nurse, it hurts so bad. I need something stronger.”

I sighed, trying very hard to resist the urge to roll my eyes. It was a tiny laceration. I’ve seen eight year olds with bigger scrapes on their knees, and not complain. This guy was just looking for an easy score for meds. “I’ll let the doctor know, and make you an appointment for Wednesday, okay?”

“Whatever,” he grumbled, hopping off the gurney, and making a beeline from the door.

“Guess I won’t be seeing him soon,” I mumbled, jotting the note anyway in his chart, before hitting save, and closing the file. I made my way to the office, needing more coffee. Lights out was an hour ago, and with any luck, Hannah would be here in about forty-five minutes to relieve me for the night. Good thing, too. I was beat.

There was a knock on the door as I stirred in my second heaping scoop of sugar. “So much for a break.”

I got up, shocked to see Axel Cook standing there, blood dripping from his head.  “What happened?”

I quickly ushered him in, bringing him to one of the back rooms, and dabbing blood away from his eye. “Did someone hit you?” For some reason, the thought of him hurt made my gut twist protectively.

Even though he was hurt, there was a smile on his face. “I needed to see you, Paige.”

I poured peroxide on a cotton swab, dabbing at his injury. “What are you talking about?”

“No one hurt me,” he explained, pulling my hand away to get my full attention. “I just needed an excuse to see you. I wanted to talk to you.”

I blinked, still not one hundred percent computing, until he took my hand in his own, entwining our fingers. “I can’t get you out of my head. I even dreamt about you last night, about that sweet strawberry smell radiating from your hair, about that silky voice, calling my name.”

“Axel,” I started, but honestly what could I say? He wasn’t the only one with vivid dreams last night. Seeing him now, knowing the lengths he’d gone to just to see me again? I didn’t want to send him away.

“Don’t say no, Paige. Let’s just talk. I want to know more about you.” He pulled me until I was sitting next to him, never letting go of my hand, as his thumb traced circles over the fleshy part between my thumb and forefinger.

“Okay,” I whispered.

He leaned closer, wrapping a lock of my hair around his free hand, and bringing it to his face. “This scent. I’m pretty sure it’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever smelled.”

“It’s just shampoo.” I swallowed, attempting to ignore how amazing it felt having him this close to me.

“Tell me something about you,” he whispered in my ear, sending a shiver down my spine, as my pulse began to race.

“I’m really not that interesting.” I couldn’t focus with him so close. All I could do was imagine what it would be like with his hands on me.

His hand reached up, tucking a stray hair behind my hair, as he nuzzled my neck. I bit back a moan. “What are you thinking?” His tongue traced my ear. “Right,” he sucked the lobe into his mouth briefly as I stifled a groan. “Now.”

“You are so sexy.” The words just slipped out of my mouth, but I didn’t regret them. He
was
sexy. So, so amazingly sexy. With all of my boyfriends, and all the guys I’d slept with, none had ever turned me on so quickly and completely, to the point where having him—in every sense of the word—was all I could think about.

“Mmm,” he tilted my head back, exposing my neck. “I like the way you think.”

He stood, pivoting so that he was in front of me, before leaning closer, brushing his face against my chest. His hot breath was mere inches from my straining nipples; the thin cotton of my scrubs doing nothing to hide how hard they were.

He waited a second for me to pull away, and when I didn’t, the hand on my hip inched up, reaching the skin at my waist. It felt like fire, licking at my skin wherever he touched, and I wanted to be burned. I wanted that heat to devour me.

I’d been so focused I didn’t notice his other hand moving between us, brushing ever so slightly against my core. I nearly melted right there. “You can’t…” I tried, but my words and my tone were in total disagreement.

“You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen,” he whispered in my ear, his tongue flicking out to trace the outer rim of my ear. “I have no idea what it is about you, but I know you feel it, too.”

I did. I so did. “We can’t…” I tried again, even as I felt my body leaning closer into him.

The hand at my waist moved up under my shirt, pushing my bra up and out of the way, and taking one nipple in his fingers. Rolling, kneading, pulling. A helpless moan escaped my lips as my eyes rolled back in ecstasy.

“What are you doing to me?” I breathed.

He moved his mouth along my jaw, his scruff scratching my cheek. “I was going to ask you the same thing,” he whispered against me before he crushed his lips to mine, claiming me right there. His lips were soft, but demanding, pulling my bottom lip into his mouth and sucking on it.

My hands slid into his hair, pulling and tugging slightly, as my body yearned for more. I moved them down his broad shoulders, my nails scoring his skin, causing him to hiss. He pinched one nipple harder, pain mixed with pleasure roaring through me straight to my core.

“I have been wanting these sweet lips since the moment I laid eyes on you,” he murmured before sliding his tongue into my mouth, caressing my own like we were slow dancing.

While our tongues danced slowly, his hands moved feverishly. One hand going back and forth between each nipple as the other slipped between my legs, rubbing my clit through my pants. I was close. So close.
