“Hey, gimme
more, those are the best things I have ever eaten,” reacted
Giuseppi as he tried to pull the sack away from Farrah’s arms.

“That’s
enough, Giuseppi!” We need the rest for the Securo Fairies.

“Okay”,
responded Giuseppi reluctantly.

“But if there
are any left over, you’d better promise me that you will give them
to me.”

“I
promise.”

Suddenly, a
crack could be heard off to the right side of the mountain. Out of
fear that it was one of the Securo Fairies, the two youngsters
ducked behind the large boulder.

“What was
that?” Giuseppi whispered.

“It sounded
like a branch snapping. Someone must have stepped on one and broken
it.”

The two
fairies waited for several minutes, listening intently for another
sound. Fortunately, there was nothing to be heard. Cautiously,
Farrah walked over to the side of the cliff where she thought she
had heard the noise. She got down on the ground once again and
slowly crawled to the edge. Her knee dug into a sharp rock and for
a second, Farrah felt like screaming. Summoning all the strength
she had, she suppressed her scream as she rubbed her knee
frantically.

“Are you okay
Farrah?” asked Giuseppi in a whispered yell.

“Yeah, it’s
nothing. I’ll be okay.”

Recomposed,
Farrah peered over the edge of the cliff, but nothing was to be
seen. Little did she know, it was Samantha Scarcity that had made
the noise. She had been following them the entire day. She took off
out of fear that the two Fairies had heard the noise she made when
she grabbed onto a branch at the side of the mountain.

“I guess it
was just the wind,” hollered Farrah.

“Okay,
Giuseppi, enough stalling, it’s time to get started.”

“Okay, Farrah,
what do you want me to do?” asked Giuseppi, sounding eager for the
first time that day.

“I want you to
head down the opposite side of the mountain across from the cave.
Carefully swing around to the side of the mountain and take cover
behind the bushes across from the Securo Fairies,” instructed
Farrah as she pointed out the bushes that were seen clearly from
where they were standing. Farrah took out another smaller sack from
out of her purse.

“Plug your
nose, Giuseppi.”

Farrah began
to transfer 10 muffins into the smaller sack. She tied it tightly
and handed it to Giuseppi.

“You’ll wait
for my signal and then fling the sack in the direction of the
Securo Fairies. Don’t wait - make like gang busters and get your
butt back up to the mountain.”

With the sack
in his hand, Giuseppi nodded and carefully scaled down the side of
the mountain. The wind had picked up. Giuseppi tried to maintain
his balance by fluttering his wings away from the mountain. When he
reached the bushes, he positioned his head through a gap, giving
him a better view of the Securo Fairies.

They stood in a
half-moon formation, wobbling their heads back and forth alertly.
Giuseppi looked up at the top of the mountain where Farrah had her
hand in the air. Giuseppi plugged his nose with one hand, and with
the other, he carefully untied the sack. The Securo Fairies
instantly detected the aroma of the muffins. Their crinkled
nostrils were tilted upward to get a better whiff. Keeping his
focus on Farrah, she gave him the signal by dropping her arm.

Giuseppi flung
the sack high into the air. It landed directly in front of the
Securo Fairies, startling them. They backed toward the cave,
fearing that it was an attack, their hands filled with Pixie dust.
Soon the sweet aroma of the banana and eggplant muffins became
irresistible to the distracted Securo Fairies. Like a pack of
wolves, they dove onto the sack creating a dog pile. With their
post momentarily unattended, Giuseppi and Farrah used the
opportunity to sneak in behind them and into the dark cave.

“We did it,”
whispered Giuseppi excitedly.

“Not so fast,
Giuseppi, we still have to deal with the two Securo Fairies and the
watchbeasts guarding the enchanted Vault.”

“Oh, right,”
said Giuseppi, who unconsciously backed up toward the entrance of
the cave. The aroma of the muffins had swept into the cave and he
was once again craving some more. Farrah walked up to him and
slapped his face to snap him out of the trance.

“Snap out of
it, Giuseppi, we’ve got work to do!”

Chapter 14: Give me Your Hand

The cave was
lit by a series of lanterns that lined the middle walls neatly. The
enchanted lanterns glowed even brighter as the two fairies passed
them. This was a safety measure to warn the Securo Fairies that
someone was approaching. Farrah and Giuseppi approached cautiously,
ducking under each lantern.

The
unspectacular look of the cave surprised Farrah, considering how
important the cave was to Fairyland. As she spotted two Securo
Fairies standing in front of the first vault about 20 yards away
from her, she was reminded about the purpose of the cave –
protection of the Tooth Fairy Dust. Giuseppi’s eyes scrutinized the
spot where the Securo Fairies stood. Although there was no sign of
the watchbeasts, he by no means felt comforted.

The two fairies
hugged the cool wall of the cave. They were shielded out of view by
a large section of the wall that protruded like a wave into the
centre. The two Securo Fairies were huge; well over 7 feet tall,
despite being barefoot. Both had hulking muscles that stretched the
cloth shirts that they were wearing. One of the Securo Fairies had
his shirt slightly open, revealing a series of long jagged scars.
Farrah assumed that these were battle wounds after a long tenure as
protector of the cave.

The tremendous
black wings of the Securo had distracted Farrah. They were so long
that they scraped the ceiling of the cave. Giuseppi on the other
hand was more worried about Farrah’s plan for getting past them.
His legs shook as he looked at the massive fairies before the
vault.

“Okay,
Giuseppi, here’s the plan. I want you to take some muffins from out
of the sack and I want you to throw them behind us, in the opposite
direction of the Securo Fairies, as far away as you can.”

“Got it,
Farrah, but just one question, how are we going to get into that
vault?”

“You leave
that to me,” responded Farrah, as she handed her friend the sack of
muffins.

Giuseppi
reached into the sack that contained only a few muffins. He plugged
his nose and took them out all but one. He stared at Farrah with
the muffins in his hands. Farrah gave Giuseppi a nod and without
hesitation, he launched the muffins as far as he could. They landed
a far distance away, undetected by the lanterns, as they lay in
darkness behind them. Their attention was now turned back to the
Securo Fairies. It did not take long for them to take the bait.

“Look, Farrah,
I think one is beginning to smell the muffins,” spoke Giuseppi,
sounding a little like a frog with his nose still plugged.

One of the
Securo Fairies began to crinkle up his long pointed nose as he
whiffed the aroma of the muffins. Then the second Securo Fairy did
the same. Unknowingly, they began to move away from the door of the
vault in the direction of the muffins. It wasn’t long until they
passed by Giuseppi and Farrah, who had gone unnoticed behind the
protruding rock. Once the two fairies had passed them, Farrah
grabbed Giuseppi’s hand and rushed him to the vault.

Giuseppi took a
quick peek behind him to make sure that they had not been spotted.
Seeing that the Securo were crawling on their hands and knees
trying to find the source of the sweet smell, Giuseppi returned his
attention to the vault. Farrah had already taken out her Pixie
pouch and was standing before the massive door when two watchbeasts
crawled from out of the darkness. The salivating creatures
positioned themselves in front of the doors to the vault.

Blood dripped
slowly out of the sides of their stained mouths. One of the
watchbeasts locked his beady eyes onto Giuseppi who had begun to
quiver uncontrollably. Their spike-like tails and thick fur of
their backs stood straight up in the attack position. Farrah tried
to think of a defence spell as she grabbed for her Pixie dust, but
it was too late.

The two
watchbeasts lunged, but much to the surprise of the two fairies,
they had lunged right past the spot where they stood. Instead, they
galloped past and to the area where the Securo fairies continued to
crawl in search of the muffins. With a keen sense of smell, it
wasn’t long until one of the watchbeasts found a muffin. It scooped
the muffin in its claws and was about to eat it, when the other
watchbeast slashed at its back. A gash formed quickly and with
blood spilling onto the ground, the watchbeast took the opportunity
to snatch the muffin in its mouth. The thieving beast ran for the
exit while the two Securo Fairies and the other watchbeast chased
quickly behind.

“I guess the
spell also work on animals,” Farrah chuckled.

With her
attention directed back to the vault, she sprinkled some Pixie dust
in her opened palm and blew it onto the doors repeating the words
Aperta. Although the door of the vault shook slightly, it did not
budge. Farrah repeated the word Aperta once again, but this time
there was no movement, the spell had not worked.

“Geez Fairies,
Farrah, what in Fairyland are we going to do now?” Asked a nervous
Giuseppi, who continued to look behind him at the two Securo
Fairies who had entered the cave once again. They had dropped to
the ground and were crawling on their hands and knees to look for
the other muffins.

“I don’t know
what happened,” answered Farrah, as she knocked quietly on the door
of the vault. She was sure that the spell was going to work and at
that moment, she felt defeated.

“Well, you’d
better think of something quick, Farrah, or else we are gonna be
done for. You’ve made those watchbeasts hungry, once they realize
the muffins are all gone, they’ll surely come back for us,” said
Giuseppi, trying to sound stern, but the nervousness in voice his
made his words unconvincing.

Farrah looked
closely at the large metallic door of the vault. It was pristine
clean, not a smudge to be found. She studied the structure,
starting at the top left of the door. At first glance, she spotted
nothing out of place. At her second go around, she noticed a tiny
groove in the bottom corner of the massive door. She crouched down
to get a better look. Giuseppi noticed what Farrah was doing and
crouched down next to her.

“What do you
think it is, Farrah?”

In one of her
trances, Farrah ignored Giuseppi and rubbed her finger along the
outside rim of the groove. Although she was a little fearful, she
had an idea.

“Giuseppi, it
looks like some sort of finger scan. I’m guessing that only the
fingerprint of fairy having clearance to enter the vault will be
granted access. As far as I know, only the King and Queen, The
Securo Fairies and Tooth Fairies are permitted to enter the vaults
in the Miracolo Cave.”

Upon hearing
this, Giuseppi sat on the ground and hugged his knees nervously as
he rocked back and forth.

“Well, that’s
just great, Farrah. We’re doomed,” Giuseppi said a little too
loudly causing both of them to turn and look behind them out of
fear that the Securo Fairies had heard. Fortunately, they were
still slothing around on the ground. The watchbeasts were nowhere
in sight, which worried Giuseppi, who looked back nervously at
Farrah.

Farrah’s mind
worked a mile a minute. She knew that she didn’t have much time so
she stretched out her finger and slowly moved it toward the scan.
She was about to press it, when her finger was blocked by
Giuseppi’s hand.

“Farrah, why
on Fairyland would you think that you would have security clearance
to get into the vault? It’s not like you are the Queen of
Fairyland. Plus you don’t even know what happens if the scan
doesn’t recognize your finger. Maybe 1000 volts of electricity will
jet out electrocuting you to death.”

Now fearful,
Farrah pulled away her hand.

“Giuseppi,
you’re right, there is no way of telling what will happen if I
place my finger on the scan. Maybe something bad will happen. But
look at the situation that we are in. If we walk away from the
vault and back through the cave toward the Securo Fairies, we’re
surely dead. I’ve got to try something.”

Before
Giuseppi had a chance to respond, Farrah pointed her finger at the
scan once again. Although she was far from confident, she swiftly
pressed her finger into the groove in the door. Instantly the door
of the vault disappeared into the ground.

If Giuseppi
wasn’t convinced before, as he stood looking upon the mountain of
Tooth Fairy dust before him, there was no longer a shadow of a
doubt. He now believed wholeheartedly that Farrah was truly
destined to be a Tooth Fairy.

“Wooh Hooo!
Farrah, that was incredible!”

Now Farrah was
the one who looked back at the Securo Fairies to discover that they
had found the muffins and were munching away. The two fairies ran
toward the mound of gold Pixie dust. Both took out their own Pixie
pouches and emptied the contents on the ground. Farrah shoved her
hands into the sparkling Tooth Fairy dust, scooping up as much as
she could. However, when Giuseppi dove his hand in, all he felt was
a searing pain.

“Yeaow!”
screeched Giuseppi.

“What’s the
matter?” Asked Farrah as she dropped what she was doing to attend
to her friend.

“That Tooth
Fairy dust is burning hot,” replied Giuseppi as he placed his hand
between his thighs to numb the pain.

“Don’t worry
about me, Farrah, you go ahead, we don’t have much time.”

Reluctantly,
Farrah went back to the mound and filled her Pixie sack to the
brim.
