“That’s what you call it.”

“I’m still alive Max. Drack could have killed me and he didn’t.”

“Are you seriously considering letting a vampire and a hybrid raise your daughter? Ryan, bro you are off your meds.”

“I mean do we have any other options. Everyone in our family is dead.”

“Yeah but--”

“Who Max? Uncle Donny is a heavy drinker and a hunter.”

“Cyan has an aunt, Patricia.”

“Patricia is clueless. She would have to move and get another identity. You want to tell her about vampires and demons? Can she even control a kid that can shoot fireballs or whatever other supernatural powers she has?”

“Well no but--”

“Cyan is my daughter. We’re connected. She’s in my heart. I love her. I felt it the first time I saw her. We can’t take a two-year-old hunting with us.”

“No butt--”

“She knows her mother is dead. Scar explained it to her. She has no one. I love this kid but I’m not a mother.”

“And a vampire is a good mother.”

“Maybe not for a human kid but we know Cyan is more than human.”

“Fuck dude.”

“Cyan wants to be with Scar.”

“Do you hear yourself? You want Scar the newbie vampire to raise your half demon kid. I remember you when you were possessed. Ryan man, you should not have been walking the streets.”

“Cyan will not be like me. I won’t let that happen.”

“There is no guarantee that you won’t have to put her down.”

“Like you put Scar down?” Ryan sneered.

“Wh-what?” Max stammered.

“Dude you fucked a vampire but you want to question my decisions.”

“No way. What are you talking about?”

“What took so long for you two to come back with the food?”

“The place was crowded.”

“What happened at the barn when she kidnapped you?”

“Nothing.”

“Bullshit! Your neck is bleeding. You fed her your blood.”

Max reached up a squatted the small droplet of blood that had rose to the surface. Max slapped his hand away.

“Ryan look.”

“Just shut up. I hear your argument but one day Vampir, McIlroy or some other vampire, demon or white wolf will come for my daughter. Scar is powerful. Powerful enough that she has a direct line to the most powerful hybrid ever. Scar may be the only one able to protect Cyan. If she has to do it through that hybrid asshole then so be it.”

“This stinks to high heaven.”

“She’s my daughter. It’s my decision.”

Max shook his head in disbelief. He had a bad feeling about this. Giving Cyan to Drack by way of Scar was a terrible idea. He would probably use Cyan as a weapon, a weapon against them one day. Was he being a hypocrite? Of course he was. He had slept with Scar twice, well three times now that she was a vamp and he had even let her drink his blood. He wasn’t proud of it but Scar still had a major piece of his heart, the piece that he wasn’t willing to let go.

He never really thought Scar would hurt a child but it was Drack he was concerned with. Why would their enemy, the hybrid they hunt, offer their family member any protection? It just didn’t sit right with him but he knew Ryan had made up his mind. Short of kidnapping Cyan he really didn’t have any choice but to let her go with Scar.

***

Scar was a vampire and daylight was her biggest foe. She would have to leave a few hours before daybreak to get to a secure location, an underground location. Cyan was still asleep. Ryan placed her sleeping in Scar’s Jeep.

Sure he was leery but Ryan felt like this was the best decision he could make. When he talked to her daughter he had this feeling that she would be better cared for with Scar. Cyan was able to touch him and convey all the things Scar had shared. He was surprised by the images she gave him.

Scar wanted to be a mother. She promised Cyan she would keep her safe and teach her things. It felt like Scar loved his daughter even though that seemed impossible. Could it had been that Cyan made people and monsters love her? He wasn’t sure.

Ryan kissed his sleeping daughter on the forehead. He secured her in the seatbelt and closed the door.

“Scar.”

“Ryan just call. We can FaceTime. I will always be available to answer your calls. This is not a trick.”

“Yeah I’m just--”

“Worried. You’re supposed to be. You’re a father. I had one of those once upon a time.”

“Yeah right, me too.” Ryan forged a smile.

“Stay with her. I’m going to say goodbye to your brother.”

“Good luck with that.”

Scar walked away from the Jeep. She landed a few parking spaces down where Max was leaning on his truck pouting.

“Hey you.” She greeted him as he looked up into her eyes.

“I never got to say goodbye to you the last time.”

“Is this goodbye?” Scar asked.

“It sure seems like it to me.”

“It’s see you later.”

“Later but under what circumstances?”

“What is it about me that you don’t trust?”

Max chuckled. “You are not the problem.”

“What is so funny?”

“I don’t trust myself. I see you and it’s like everything I was ever taught means nothing. You are not the same Scar I used to know but for some reason I don’t even seem to care. I don’t trust myself.”

Scar took Max’s hand in hers. “For a long time I wondered why me? I mean seriously. My parents were murdered. My brother is a vamp. I am a vamp. What are the odds? I, lose, you. I lose my chance at happiness and why? What did I do? I questioned God. Then I realized do I even have the right to talk to him anymore. I’m a vampire. Do we believe in God? Is that allowed?”

“I don’t have the answers. I’m just as confused as you. I want to stop caring about you.”

“Max I feel the same way. I want to stop having feelings for you to but I can’t. I try to forget about you and I just can’t do it.”

“Seeing you again was the best.” Max cracked a boyish grin.

“Yes but it was bad too, right?”

“Yes.” He agreed.

“The more I tried to forget about you the harder it got.”

“I don’t want to forget about you.” Max shook his head no.

“I don’t want to forget about you but we’re on the opposite ends of the world. I’m a bad girl now. I’ve done bad things.”

“We all do bad things. I cannot believe I let you drink my blood.” Max smiled thinking of it. He was really hardcore now.

“Yeah you let me do it. Your blood taste so hunter rich and delicious.”

Max watched as Scar’s eyes rolled to the back of her head. “I’m already freaked I let you fang me so please don’t enjoy it so much.”

Scar chuckled. “Please be safe.” Scar pulled Max into a hug. He held her tight and she kissed his cheek.”

“You are so badass now.”

“Yeah I know.” Scar shrugged. “Stay sly fox, cause I got big plans for you.” Scar winked and licked her lips. Max watched her walk away and he waited until his brother walked up. They waited for Scar to pull away first and then they followed her out of the motel parking lot. They turned out but in the opposite direction.

EPILOGUE

Scar was back to the place that she now called her home. She had no idea how long she would be here but Drack had made her believe that she could come and go as she pleased. That was just as long as she didn’t stray too far away.

Scar hated to admit she found a sense of comfort in being a part of Drack’s protected few. She had learned many things being a part of his crew. She learned that she wasn’t the only one under Drack’s protection but she learned that Max and Ryan were also under his cloak of protection. Why would a hybrid protect hunters wasn’t clear but whatever Drack ordered was gospel. It was unwritten law but the Fox Brothers were off limits. Scar wondered if that was because Drack wanted to kill them himself. She would never dare ask. You were never allowed to question him.

Scar never told Max anything about Drack. She didn’t see what good it would do. She had a mission and Drack made it clear her vampire brother would be safe as long as she pledged her loyalty to him above all others.

Scar had full access the Drack’s mansion. She passed vampires and demons and they all nodded their heads at her when she approached. It was weird going from a low level vamp to the right hand of the King.

Scar had been summoned and she walked the long halls to get to the wing of the mansion that Drack spent the majority of his time. The heartbeat Drack gave her heightened her senses and she followed the sounds until she was close to her Lord.

She walked past his bed and stopped outside the opulent bathing room. The door was open so she didn’t bother to knock.

“Scarlet come.” Drack called out to her in a whisper that echoed in her chest. His voice was just as powerful as his presence and so difficult to resist.

Scar walked through the doorway. She stood before a huge pool of pure milky white water. What was it with the color white? All the furniture was white, his clothing was white everything was white.

Drack was nude, partially submerged in the pool. His head was tilted back. His eyes were closed. Scar tried not to stare but she couldn’t help it. She was just happy he wasn’t staring back at her.

“I am here, my Lord.” She rolled her eyes. She couldn’t help it. It just sounded so stupid and strange. She hated to say that bullshit but Drack took that Lord mess seriously.

Drack slowly opened his eyes and peered up at Scar. He may have smiled but it was difficult to tell, he was so rigid, so stiff, so undeniably attractive but still odd.

“Your mission?”

“I have the child, Cyan.”

“Such a beautiful name.”

“Just as you suspected, she is a Fox. It was difficult but I convinced Ryan to let me protect her.”

“And Max?”

“What about Max?” She was protective of Max and she did everything in her power to hide her fondness for him from Drack. If Drack knew he could use Max to punish her. He probably would.

“Did he give you any opposition?”

“He tried.”

“I’m sure. He is so stubborn. He is a very relevant influence on Ryan.”

“Ryan made the final decision.”

“Yes, they didn’t try to kill you?”

“I’m sure they thought about it but we have a history.”

“Yes that idiotic hunter’s hit list. And the child’s mother?”

“She is dead. One of Vampir’s demon buddies possessed her. Max Fox killed her to save Ryan.”

“Good, so you didn’t have to do it.”

“No I didn’t.”

“And that traitorous Vampir?”

“I let him get away, just as you instructed.” Scar lied. She never had the opportunity to kill Vampir. There was no way she would have let him go. He was the reason she was a vamp and her entire agenda has been to kill him.

“Don’t worry. It was just a lesson. I will let you kill him soon enough.”

“Will you?”

Drack ignored her snark. “I am pleased.”

“My Lord, if you want the child, why didn’t you have me bring her to you?” Scar knew not to ask Drack questions but somehow the words just rushed out of her before she could stuff them back in.

Drack paused to glare at Scar. “She is my connection to the Fox’s.”

Since he didn’t take her head off she decided to try another question. “Why do you want to be connected to vampire hunters?” Scar not so innocently asked. This entire twisted show was confusing and tedious. At least she thought so.

“Cyan may have Ryan Fox’s DNA but she is my child. She was made when I was inside Ryan. I had possession of his body when the little girl was conceived.”

“So does that mean she’s your daughter?”

Drack grinned in his controlled and sinister fashion. “One day Cyan Fox will be the new messiah. As so it is written.”

Written where? Scar thought but didn’t dare ask. She reached her question quota for the day. “Yes my Lord.”

“Come join me.” Drack raised one hand out of the pure milky water. “I shall reward you.”

“Reward me?” Scar was deafly afraid of Drack but made sure to always put up a brave front.

“With me of course.” He smirked.

“Yes my Lord.” The words left her lips and she preferred to run in the opposite direction. Not because being enthralled by Drack wasn’t pleasurable. It was because it was a blatant betrayal toward the man she loved. Max would never know but she would know. After tasting Max’s blood she had even stronger feelings for him.

“Disrobe.” He ordered.

Scar smiled and quickly removed all her clothing. Naked, she stepped in the chalky pool and waded over to Drack in the shallow end.

Drack rose to standing. He cupped the back of Scar’s neck in his massive hand.

Scar stared into his eyes wondering what he would do next, what he would do to her. Her new heartbeat thumped fast underneath her vampire body. Drack’s stale expression never gave his intentions away. He planted a slow sensual kiss on her lips.
