And what could have happened next:

'What the fuck?' Miles thought as the mutated, three arm having men charged down the hallway. He began to pancake, lifting his revolver to his face and pulling the trigger. The bullet flew speedingly quickfast towards the closest man with one more than two arms, striking him in the earlobe which appeared to be his weakness. The man fell to the ground with a loud *THUMPATUSHPUD* and the others gathered around him. Then Miles awoke in his red, racing car shaped bed. It was all a dream…but was it?

And thus concludeth the blooper section! So next time you read Shakespeare, Charles Dickens or Edgar Allan Poe, think of the many comical fuck ups they must have faced in their times of writing. And be thankful to live in an era with a backspace key.

Gyaros Trivia by Alex Healy

And now for an insight into the highly sophisticated lives and minds of your humble authors. In no particular order, here some random trivia!

* Rohan wrote chapters 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 11, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 29 and Epilogues 1 and 2.

* Alex wrote Prologue, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28.

* Spongebob Squarepants references:

If you're anything like us and you've watched way too much Spongebob Squarepants seasons 1 through 3 then you may have noticed a few references and quotes from the show in this book. One of these is the “giant rusty anchor” that sits in the middle of The Dustbowl's Rusty Anchor bar, this is a reference to the episode Krusty Love. The next is when Miles can “see Jasper through a little window” while he's working at Ransom's Fresh Meat, a reference to The Algae's Always
Greener. Another Spongebob reference is during the arena battle with The Dustbowlers when Lucy defeats Roger Gunn and the announcer quotes Reg from The Salty Spitoon in the episode No Weenies Allowed “Wow, you destroyed that guy without even touching him.” There are plenty more in there but those are the ones I can remember, see if you can find them all!

* Roger Gunn was originally named Roger P. Mcfisticuffs but we realized that the name was just too fucking stupid.

* The length of time it took us to write this book was around two months, roughly the same amount of time that passes in the story.

* We originally planned for Maxen to die at The Rusty Anchor and not return later in the book but we made him too cool to kill off.

* Though never mentioned in the book, Miles' old friend Clark is homosexual. In the universe of Carthage and Gyaros sexual discrimination simply does not exist, whether between genders or sexual orientations. We plan to build on this aspect in future books.

* During writing sessions of this book, we consumed in total over forty Jammie Wagon Wheels each, there are six in a packet.

* The skateboard at Adam's house is based on an old Natas Kaupas deck from SMA Skateboards, Natas was one of the early pioneers of street skating in the 1980s.

* The “chucksters” at Titans Arena are a reference to Super Mario Sunshine, in one of the secret worlds there are Piantas who will throw Mario in the direction that they're facing when talked to, before throwing Mario, some of them will say the line “I'm a chuckster.”

* The moon Gyaros is named after a small, unpopulated Greek island which served as a prison and place of exile in the early Roman Empire and later again from 1948 to 1974.

* In the mansion from chapter fourteen there is a table with a typewriter and two ink ribbons on it, this is a reference to Resident Evil.

Acknowledgments

A book is not written by one person, you see this book was written by both myself and my brother Alex. But all jokes aside The Mice Eat Iron would not exist as it does today without the help and dedication of some very special people. I’d like to thank our parents first and foremost for always providing steadfast support and encouragement of our creative endeavours, there’s no way Gyaros would exist without their stoic resilience in putting up with us all these years.

I’d
also like to thank Anna Kozielska for reading through each chapter as it was written and providing invaluable advice, suggestions and encouragement.

And finally I’d like to thank all the wonderful readers of my blog who read through the first five chapters as I posted them and
shared their opinions and feedback, giving us the confidence to keep going and see the book through to the end.

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to making this happen!

Rohan.
