By this
time, she had lost all sense of time, all sense of where she was and
she felt the control slipping away from her. The pant coming from her
mouth sounded loud even to her ears but she could not help it, he was
driving her crazy. He worked his fingers inside her slowly as he
kissed her deeply, his tongue slipping inside her mouth. She almost
cried out in despair as he pulled out his fingers and released her
lips, she had been so close to a release that she felt the wave
shuddering through her body. But he had seen the waiter approaching
and he had stopped just in time. She had no idea how he was able to
talk to the waiter about dessert and answered questions about the
satisfaction of the meal. Rosa was a mass of quivering nerves and she
could still feel his fingers inside her.

The man
left shortly after and there was a moment of silence at the table.
Rosa could not speak, she was in no condition to do so and her body
sagged on the soft cushy chair as he put the fingers he had taken out
of her and put them inside his mouth to lick them slowly, his eyes on
hers as he did so. He leaned forward and gave her a slow kiss and the
taste of her inside his mouth was almost her undoing but she managed
to pull away from him as the waiter came back with their order of
dessert.

They
finished eating in silence and Rosa toyed with her crème
brulee. Her appetite was gone and her body felt as if it did not
belong to her. She had never felt such a powerful pull in her entire
life and she had to admit it frightened her. It was too soon.

“Can
you take me home?” she asked him quietly, not aware that he had
been watching her the whole time.

“Talk
to me,” he said quietly reaching for her hand but pulled back
when she moved it away from him.

“Tell
me what’s wrong please Rosa,” he was alarmed at her
sudden change of attitude; this was certainly not the same woman who
had responded to his touch with a passion that had almost floored
him. He had always been able to turn women on and barely feel the
ripple himself. Being Chinese he was good at that but he had never
felt like he did when he was with her. She took him over completely
and he found himself eager like a school boy with his first crush to
see her and be with her, he was falling for her hard and he had to
rein in his emotions not to frighten her away, but it appeared he had
not succeeded.
He begged her to talk to him but she refused and
with a deep sigh he paid the bill and they left the restaurant. The
wind had picked up somewhat and he saw her shivering as they waited
for the valet to bring around the car but he did not dare touch her,
she was silent and he did not know what she was thinking. He did not
dare think he had lost her, that he could not bear to think about but
maybe she needed some space and he had to give her that, if she
needed it.

He
parked the car when they arrived at her apartment and he felt a
flicker of hope when she did not get out at once. But then she spoke
and the flicker died inside him. “I need some space John,”
she refused to look at him and he willed her to do so. She did and
her eyes were somber and he ached for her laughing expression.

“Why?”
he demanded, still not daring to touch her.

“Because
I am not myself around you.” She cried out in anguish, her
hands balled into fists. “I have no control over my body when
you are near me.”

“And
that’s a bad thing,” he asked her incredulously. “I
am not myself when I am around you,” he spun her to face him.
“Look at me Rosa,” he said tightly, gripping her arms. “I
have never felt this way before and I am not going to run off scared,
I want to embrace it because it is by far the most wonderful feeling
I have ever experienced.”

“I can’t, “she whispered tearfully, raising a hand
to touch his jaw. “Please just give me some time.”

He
looked down at her in frustration and with something muttered in
Chinese he pulled her against him and totally destroyed her with a
kiss so potent that she sagged against him.

She was
dangerously out of her league and she knew it.

Chapter 4

She
busied herself at the restaurant and she did not take his calls.
After he had released her when they had reached her apartment; he had
watched her as she went into the building. She locked the door behind
her. She had noticed he had sat out there in his car a little while
before driving away. She had spent most of the night pacing and
wondering what to do. It was supposed to be casual dates and maybe
months down the road it probably would turn into something lasting.
She did not know these feelings invading her body; this fire he
ignited inside her the minute he touched her and it frightened her a
lot. She was always in control; always methodical and collected,
thinking things through; she did not sleep with someone on the first
date, she never slept with a man unless they were well protected and
she had never felt the need to beg one to take her right then and
there and she had almost done that with John; both in the restaurant
and in the car and did not care that they were in a public place.
Hayley had always laughed at her and called her a prude because she
had never indulged in kissing when they had been in high school and
to think that she had been willing to throw her reserves through the
proverbial window was something she had to think about.

He had
been calling her since Monday and she had not taken his calls. Today
was Thursday and she had not heard from him for the whole day and it
was now after seven at night. She thought she would feel relieved but
to her surprise she felt a hollow in the pit of her stomach and
realized that she missed hearing from him.

She was
in the middle of doing paper work in the office when Hayley barged
in. “You broke him!” She came and stood in front of the
desk, her arms akimbo. Her attractive face held a stern expression as
she looked at her friend seated behind the desk.

“Hayley
you frightened me,” she exclaimed, her head snapping up.

“Good,”
her friend said pulling out a chair and plopping down. “I gave
you a perfectly good man, where in this day and age good men are very
hard to find and what did you do? You broke him.”

“Don’t
be melodramatic, I did not break anyone!” Rosa avoided her
friend’s sharp gaze and transfixed on a receipt on her desk.

“He
called me and told me that you were not taking his calls and sounded
like a guy who had lost his best friend, so in truth and in fact you
did break him.” Hayley insisted. “What is wrong with you
girl? You have a good thing and you are determined to push it away,
are you out of your mind?”

“It’s
going too fast and I want to slow it down a bit,” Rosa said
defensively. “Besides I am not sure I am ready for a
relationship right now.”

Hayley
stared at her; comprehension dawning. “He has you scared,”
she said with sudden insight. “He does not fit into the ‘Rosa
mould’ and you do not know how to handle him. Well news flash
girl friend! That man is into you and you would be a fool to let him
get away from you.”

There
was silence as they stared at each other. Hayley’s expression
heated and Rosa’s mutinous as she thought about what Hayley had
just said. Her friend was right, she was scared and she was running
because she had never experienced anything like what she felt with
him before and it did not fit into her pattern of what she had
experienced before.

“I
don’t have a mold,” she muttered.

“You
do but that is about to change right now because I told him to come
by the restaurant and you two can talk.” She stood up and made
ready to leave. “He’s waiting for you at a table in the
corner.”

“Hayley,”
Rosa’s voice was panicked.

“Love
is scary; heck life is scary and full of risks so deal with it.”
Her friend told her frankly. “You are going to do fine.”
She left without waiting for a response.

Rosa
stared after her in frustration. The girl was nothing if not
interfering and she realized she had no idea how to face him after
having ignored him for almost a week. Taking a deep breath, she
smoothed back her hair and went out to find him.

Her
heart jumped when she saw him. He had ordered a glass of wine and was
sipping it slowly, looking out the glass partition.

“John,”
she murmured.

“Rosa,”
he smiled slightly. “Good to see you.”

“I
am sorry I did not take your calls.” She said uncertainly.

“Are
you going to sit?” he asked her in amusement.

She did
so with a slightly sheepish smile.

“How
sorry are you?” he quizzed.

“What?”
she looked at him puzzled.

“I
am Chinese Rosa and we are noted for being stoic, never showing our
emotion and never allowing our emotions to control us.” He
paused and looked at her. “I don’t seem to be able to do
that around you for some reason. So are you sorry enough to go out
with me tomorrow night?”

“It
depends,” she pretended to be thinking. “Am I going be
fed?”

“Definitely,”
he told her with a laugh. “I think it’s time you saw
where I live, don’t you?”

The
underlying question was there and Rosa felt her heart picking up
speed. If she agreed to go out with him and especially to his place
she knew definitely what would happen and he was letting her know
beforehand so that she could refuse or tell him to let them go
somewhere else.

“I
think so too,” she said softly.

“Good,”
he drank down the wine and stood. “I am glad you have not cut
me off entirely; I missed you.” He did not touch her but it was
like he did and she watched as he left the restaurant; her mind in a
turmoil.

*****

He
picked her up at eight on Friday and she had chosen to wear a long
black woolen skirt and a dark blue sweater. Her hair was in its usual
corkscrew curls and she had secured it with a jeweled clip on top of
her head. His apartment was in an upscale neighborhood and was truly
a bachelor’s pad with two bedrooms and a large bathroom. There
were large pieces of Chinese art on the walls and the furniture was
ultra modern.

“Make
yourself at home,” he took her coat and hung it on a cute coat
hanger shaped like a Chinese lantern.
She sat on the soft leather
sofa and he pressed the remote to start the fire in the huge
fireplace in the room. “Very nice,” she murmured. “Are
you sure you don’t want my help in the kitchen?” she
asked him as he headed that way.

“No
you are on your feet all day and I told you I wanted to pamper you.”
He told her.

She
relaxed back against the leather and closed her eyes letting the
ambiance of the room close around her.

They ate
in the living room. He had brought in a small table and spread the
meal on it. Chicken in cashew with stir fried rice with Chinese
chicken noodle salad.

“You
made all of this yourself?” she asked in amazement; tasting and
savoring the chicken.

“Why
are you so surprised?” he asked her in amusement.

“I
thought you would live only on take outs,” she told him
teasingly.

“You
thought wrong,” he told her.

“This
is very good,” she said appreciatively.

“Thanks,”
he said with a smile. They ate for a few minutes in silence before he
asked her. “Why did you refuse to take my calls?”

She put
her fork down and looked at him. “I was scared,” she told
him honestly. “You stir something inside me that I have never
felt before and I did not know what to do.”

“So
you just decided to push it away rather than deal with it.” He
observed.

“Hayley
told me off good and proper and accused me of not wanting to come out
of my comfort zone,” she said wryly. “She was right. I am
used to controlling the situation and maybe that’s why I had so
many problems in relationships in the past; I am sorry I did that to
you.”

“You
do know that I want to make love to you don’t you?” he
asked her softly, he had pushed away the plate from before him and
was looking at her.

“I
want you too,” she told him in a husky voice.

“I
want to show you the rest of the place,” he held out a hand for
her to take and she did. He took her on a tour of the apartment and
Rosa admired the use of space and the luxury and simplicity of the
furniture. Chinese art was everywhere. “I see you are into your
culture,” she teased him. He was standing right behind her and
they were in the hallway from the main bedroom.

“I
told you my parents would have my head if it were otherwise,”
he replied, pulling her back against him. Rosa stiffened for a minute
and then she relaxed against him. “Besides I am a fan.”

“I
am beginning to see why.” She was looking at one that was
painted by Zhou Tang. John explained that was referred to as the Tang
Dynasty and explained that the artist depicted the splendor of court
life. The figures were outlined in black lines and brilliant colors.
It was very elaborate and elegant. Rosa felt herself drawn to it.

She felt
him against her and the heat rising from their bodies and she knew
without a shadow of a doubt that she wanted him to make love to her.

He
turned her around to face him, tilting her chin to look at her. “I
have been dying to kiss you since before I picked you up.” He
murmured.

“What
are you waiting for?” she asked him huskily, her eyes on his
mouth. Without a word he bent his head and she opened her mouth under
his. He was unhurried as if he had all the time in the world. His
tongue entered her mouth, slowly toying with her tongue. Rosa wrapped
her arms around his neck and melted against his body; hers turning to
liquid as his kiss ignited the fire inside her. She felt his erection
pressing against her and she shuddered, moving against him
restlessly. “We have time,” he whispered against her
mouth.
