“Good morning, Dr. Declan,” she said quietly.

They stood in silence, though she caught his eyes run over her every once in awhile. She tried to ignore it. If it had nothing to do with her work this morning then she didn’t want to let it distract her. The elevator dinged. Declan stepped off of the elevator, his long stride taking him around the corner as she walked down the hall in the opposite direction.

Bri came to a stop beside Mack, but there were other interns as well. They all wore the off blue looking scrubs that Bri had honestly come to detest. Mack gave her a big smile before he started talking to her. The chatter in their group was kept low. Obviously, Bri thought, they were waiting on someone. Perhaps Andrew.

“Good morning,” Declan said as he stepped into view, “I’m glad to see that some of you were on time. Ms. Jackson, you were late.”

“I was on the elevator with you!” She cried out before her brain could stop her mouth.

“Yes. In the future I expect you to be here, on time.”

If steam had risen from the top of Brionna’s head, she wouldn’t have been surprised. She clenched her fists tightly as she stared back at him, her mouth in a thin line. Already, he was moving on, addressing the group as if he hadn’t just humiliated her.

“We’re starting off with early morning rounds,” he said. “I know we usually print out our patient lists, but Andrew has taken care of that already. Let’s get to it.”

Surprisingly, people didn’t like to be woken up at six in the morning. Brionna could tell from the scowls, squinted eyes and grumbled replies that they’d much rather be left to their sleeping. She couldn’t blame them. If six people marched into your bedroom at six am, you’d be pretty pissed too, she thought.

At least the cases were exciting. There were neurological disorders ranging from the commonplace to the rare, all tucked beneath the roof of the Desert Sun hospital. Brionna lived for the hard cases, she always had. There was something about life hanging in the balance that kicked her brain into high gear.

“Our most difficult case,” Declan was saying quietly, not disturbing this patient.

A pretty girl lay in the bed, her platinum blonde hair fanned around her face. She was breathing softly and didn’t seem all that sick at first glance, but as Declan went over the symptoms, Bri could understand their concern. She had spasms, tremors, a loss of speech. All of the symptoms would disappear, then return without warning. She was only fifteen. It was sad, but interesting to Brionna.

They stepped into the hall, Declan closing the door behind him gently. Bri could see that despite his terse treatment of the interns, he had a soft spot for his patients. That, at least in her eyes, redeemed him a lot.

“Who wants to help work on this case?” He asked the group.

Before Brionna could speak up, a blonde woman who looked a little older than her was already walking forward. She plucked the file out of Declan’s hands, her eyes going over the words hungrily. Brionna perched her hand on her hip in disbelief.

“I would like to work this case as well,” she said, surprising herself at her abruptness.

“Fine. Both of you can work on it. Alice, you’ll work with Andrew. Brionna, you’ll work with me.”

Shit.

What had she gotten herself into? Had she really just volunteered to work with Declan Longston? She started to back out, change her mind, but how would that look? Instead, she swallowed the lump that had very suddenly formed in her throat and nodded.

Was she mistaken? Or was that a look of triumph on Declan’s face? It was hard to tell, he turned right back into a steady, unreadable wall. They finished rounds without incident before they were turned to the computers to research their patients’ conditions.

The day continued in a whirlwind of patients, notes and confusion. The hospital was still troubling for Bri, she seemed to get lost at every turn. At one point; tired, out of breath and feeling a bit sorry for herself, Bri found herself in front of his office door. She didn’t want to knock, not to ask for directions. That would be awkward. As she turned to leave, the door opened.

“Can I help you with something?”

“No,” she said quickly, “I was just heading to write up notes on the patients…” she trailed off.

“Why don’t you come inside?” He said as he pushed the door open a bit further. “I’d like to speak with you.”

Something on his face drew her in. She slipped past him, her body brushing against his as she made her way to a chair. Her feet ached, her back was screaming. She settled into the black chair across from his desk once more.

“What did you want to talk to me about?”

Declan leaned against his desk, arms folded over his chest. “You’re smarter than I thought you’d be.”

“Should I be offended or…?”

“It’s a compliment,” he said. “I don’t give them often.”

“I can tell.”

To her surprise, Declan smiled. “I might be rusty in the nice department.”

Brionna wasn’t sure what was going on. His smile unnerved her, brought a smile to her lips too. The man pushed himself off of his desk.

“I’d like to get together, discuss this case with you.”

“Sure,” she said “when?”

“Next week. I saw you working hard today. Andrew and I usually take new interns that I like out to dinner, but seeing as he has dinner with his wife tonight, I would be willing to take you.”

Brionna raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

Declan chuckled. “Am I really that scary?”

She squirmed uncomfortably in her seat. “Sometimes.”

The man laughed again. “You’re honest. I like that.”

“I better get back to work,” Brionna said as she stood from her seat.

Declan was close to her. So close that she could feel his breath play over her skin. She wondered why she wanted to lean forward, place a kiss to his lips. The thought was shocking even to her, surprising. The last time she’d been with a man had been two years ago.

“You’re not hitting on me are you?” She asked suddenly.

“Would that be a problem?”

That got her. She looked for some sign that he was joking, but his face was stoic. She bit her lip.

“It would be unprofessional,” she said quietly.

“Very,” he said, but he leaned closer to her. “Still, you haven’t answered my question. Would that be a problem?”

Bri felt her knees buckle. “I...I...don’t know.”

Declan’s hand reached out. She imagined that hand dragging over her skin, the nails raking over her flesh. Her innermost thoughts, the desires that blossomed within her mind of being consumed, controlled were stepping to the forefront. Her belly tightened.

“I can see it in you,” he said deeply, his voice almost a growl, “that look on your face. I’ve seen it before.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes,” he said quietly as she hung on his every word, “that needing. It’s a monster that I play with well.”

That was what she’d always described it as. A monster. Lurking deep within her, keeping her from ever being satisfied from a normal relationship. His hand brushed over her shoulder, sending electricity through her body.

“I’m not like that,” she said in a stuttering breath.

“We’ll see,” he said as he let her go. “Go back to your work.”

Brionna found it hard to move her feet, hard to turn away. She forced herself to leave, although her body wanted to stay. As she closed the door behind her, she let out a sigh of relief.

What the hell was that
?

Chapter 2

The week flew by in a blur. She tried her best to occupy her mind with anything other than Declan, but she was having a hard time. She kept imagining his hand brushing over her skin. His lips capturing hers. All she wanted were those strong hands to push her down to her knees…

The thought had invaded her mind so quickly that she had to shake it out. She was driving home, the air conditioning blasting through the heat of the day. Declan was still on her mind. Even worse, she was having dinner with him in a few hours.

Her first goal was to take a shower. She shimmied out of the scrubs before heading to her bathroom. The water cascaded over her skin, making her sigh in appreciation. As she lathered up, she couldn’t help but to see the look in Declan’s grey eyes. Her fingers wandered, gripping her inner thighs with a fierceness that she hadn’t known she possessed. Little half moons appeared on her skin where her nails had pressed. A moan slipped from her lips.

The sound of her phone buzzing away on the sink broke her out of her daydream. Brionna peeked out of the shower. The number wasn’t familiar, but she was pretty sure it was a Phoenix area code. She quickly rinsed off before stepping out of the shower and wrapping a blue towel around her body.

It had taken her so long that the phone had long since stopped ringing. She picked it up before calling her voicemail. A deep, familiar voice echoed in her ear.

“I’ll be picking you up at seven. If you’re not ready, there will be consequences.”

“Consequences?” She shuddered.

It wasn’t unpleasant however, as if some part of him had just known. As if he’d sensed her attraction, her need. She moved from the bathroom quickly. In her closet there was a short, black dress, the top had a lace overlay. She slipped it on before she pinned up her hair, slipped in the only nice pair of earrings that she owned. Bri examined herself in the mirror. She smiled.

“Not bad,” she mumbled.

Picking up her phone, she texted Declan that she’d be ready before slipping the phone in her purse. She walked into the bathroom, laid out her makeup before she started working on her face. What possessed her, she wasn’t sure, but she went bold. Smokey eyes, bold red lip, light blush on her cheeks. By the time she was finished, she looked seductive even to herself. A knock brought her back to reality.

“Dr. Longston,” she said as she stood in the open door.

“Just Declan. You look beautiful.”

Bri felt that old embarrassment crawling its way up her spine. She beamed. Closing the door behind her, they set off in his black porsche. The restaurant they headed to was in Scottsdale. That mean class and sophistication. She was glad she’d dressed for the part.

Sophie’s was a moderate sized restaurant, but when they walked in, Bri could see why it was loved. Everything seemed to shimmer with a soft, warm glow. There were chandeliers above, casting warm, yellow light over the room. Mirrors filled the room with the reflections of their diners.

“Wow,” Bri breathed, “this is beautiful.”

Declan grinned. “I thought you’d like it.”

He held out her seat as she slipped onto a plush, velvet cushion. No sooner than he was seated, a waiter  came over, dressed all in black, to take their drink orders. Before she could speak, Declan ordered both of them a glass of Chardonnay.

“Why do you keep doing that?” Bri asked.

“Doing what?”
“Speaking for me. I never asked for that. I’m pretty sure I can think for myself.”

“I know you can. I do it, because you like it.”

Brionna bristled. “What makes you think that?”

“You mean, you don’t like me telling you what to do? You don’t like the idea of a command being given and you having no choice, but to obey?”

A warm, delicious feeling travelled between her thighs. “No.”

“I was mistaken then,” he said with a raised brow, “please forgive me.”

Only he wasn’t forgiven. Even his words seemed to send her into a euphoric state of mind where she craved his touch, his mouth, his skin. She pushed the thought away, smiled.

“No need to apologize. Let’s talk about something else.”

At first, the conversation between them was tepid. It didn’t take long before they started to realize that they had things in common. They both had a love of Italian food and good wine. Both had a love of books. Brionna felt herself liking him more with each passing minute. Especially when he smiled. She hadn’t expected it, but he had a sense of humor that was so much like her own, she was astonished.

“Why do you seem so scary?” She asked as dessert arrived in front of them.

“I’m not scary, I just hate time wasters. I love my patients, love my hospital. All I want is the best for both of them.”

“You run people off though,” she said as she sliced into the molten lava cake, cutting through the powdered sugar on top. She popped the slice into her mouth, gave a contented moan.

“If you want to be a doctor, you have to have a backbone. You have to be confident in yourself. That’s all I try to gauge. It’s not my fault that they run away,” he said as he watched her eat, suddenly distracted.

Declan moved forward, his fingers brushing against her lip. She ran her tongue over the spot that he’d touched. A bit of powdered sugar stuck to her tongue. Embarrassment ran through her, but he simply continued to smile.

“Ready?” He asked after he signed the check.

“Yes. Thanks for the dinner.”

“No problem.”

***

They drove back to her house in darkness, the streetlights illuminating their way. Music played softly on his speakers. Their conversation was sparse, but not uncomfortable. She liked the sound of his deep voice, especially after she was so comfortable from dinner. Before she knew it, they were pulling up in front of her place.

“Thanks again,” she said as she started to climb out. His hand stopped her.

“How about a cup of coffee?”

Brionna swallowed, but nodded. “Sure, I can do that.”

They walked up the stairs to her place together. She fumbled with her keys a moment before she let him inside. Quickly, she realized that she still had clothes strewn on the floor. Moving with record speed, she scooped them up before depositing them in the laundry hamper.

“Sorry for the mess,” she called from her bedroom, “I’m still settling in.”

She turned and jumped. Declan stood at the entrance to her room, his tie was undone, first three buttons of his shirt popped open. She caught a glimpse of muscled, chest. She stuttered, grasping for words.

“I could have sworn that I pegged you right,” Declan cut into her thoughts, “you have that look in your eyes.”

“What look?” She asked quickly, backing up a step.

“That hungry look.”

Brionna wanted to melt. How could he tell? Was it really written that clearly on her face? He took a step forward. She  stayed put. His hand ran over her cheek, traced down to brown skin of her neck. She thought she’d melt at any moment.

“Am I making you uncomfortable? No games. If I am, I’ll stop. If you want me however, then don’t lie.”

She’d seen that same look on his face in the restaurant. He’d known that she was lying all along. Bri swallowed thickly. It had been a long time since she’d given herself to anyone and here he was shattering her walls.

“I...want you,” she said finally. It took every ounce of courage in her body, but it was the truth. She wanted him. She wanted to rip the shirt from his body, run her tongue over his flesh.

“Good girl,” he said calmly as if he’d been expecting that reaction all along. “How bad do you want me?”

“Very badly,” she said almost breathlessly.

Declan’s hand gripped her hair. It was all he needed to hear. He pushed her down to her knees, the carpet pushing against her knees. His left hand undid his pants, pushed them down exposing an already stiffened cock. That was all it took.

Brionna’s other side kicked in, the side that craved the control. Her mouth opened, lips taking in his member quickly. She teased his flesh, dragged her tongue up and down his shaft until he shuddered, his cock twitching in the warm, wet confines of her mouth. Between her thighs, moisture gathered, rolled down her thighs. Why was he so goddamned irresistible?

It didn’t take long before Declan was pulling her back to her feet. He whipped the tie from around his neck, brought her wrists behind her back. She crossed them easily, let him tie her wrists together. It was more than what she wanted, to give into his control was what needed.

“Is this okay?” He asked as he tugged at the bindings at her wrist.

“Yes,” she said quickly. “It’s fine.”

“You mean, you like it,” he said as she heard the familiar sound of a condom being unwrapped.

She could barely bite back the excitement. Bri nodded. “Yes, I like it,” she said breathlessly.

Bri felt his cock press against her opening, felt him tease her lips. She wiggled her hips. A chuckle escaped his lips, filling the room. She turned her head, looked over her shoulder.

“What do you want?” He asked deeply.

Bri bit her lip. “You’re not being nice.”

Thwack! A hand landed on her ass. She took in a sharp breath, the warm sensation making her nipples peak against the mattress. That was the last thing that she’d been expecting. Yet, it was what she’d been craving for some time. His hand landed on her skin again making her moan and wiggle her hips. Slap after slap landed on the rounded flesh of her ass. Each one made her want him more. She was craving his body, craving the feeling of his cock nestled deep within her.

Bri knew that she was dripping wet by this point, she wanted nothing more than to move her hand over her clit, rub it furiously. Still bound, she settled for whimpering in frustration.

“What do you want?”

“I want you to fuck me!”

Brionna didn’t hold back. There was no point. One thing she was finding out about Declan, he didn’t play games.

The man slipped his cock inside of her making her moan so deeply she felt it travel to the tips of her toes. His strong hands gripped her hips as he began to thrust into her. Brionna was turned on when she turned back, his body was naked, his pale skin on hers was intoxicating. She was still clothes, dress flipped up to allow him access, not even her panties were removed. If nothing else, it showed just how badly he’d wanted her. He’d waited for nothing.

Declan had his way with her. Every new position was torture. Every new position was heaven. By the time he’d had his fill, his deep groaning filling the room as he came, she was exhausted. Her body still shivered, the aftershocks making her rub her legs together. He released her arms.

Brionna had expected him to get dressed, leave. Instead, he walked to her bathroom, grabbed a towel and cleaned up her overheated body. Then, he fetched both of them water before settling in beside her in bed.

“You’re staying?” She asked still trying to catch her breath.

“Would you like me to leave?” He asked. His voice was serious, but his face held slight signs of disappointment.

Bri shook her head. “No, you can stay the night. If you like.”

A grin covered his lips. “That would be nice.”

Brionna gazed at the clock. It was already heading on eleven and she had to be up early. She set her clock before climbing back in beside him. Instantly, Declan’s strong arms wrapped her up tightly. Her fingers snagged the light switch throwing them into darkness. She’d never felt so at ease before. It wasn’t long before she had drifted off.
