Read In the Catskills: A Century of Jewish Experience in "The Mountains" Online

A very few of the hotels listed may have been small boarding houses, but most appear to have been regular hotels, even if very small. Their number (1,100) vastly exceeds the commonly heard estimate of 500 hotels, making even more significant the extent of hotels in the Catskill Mountains of Sullivan County, Ulster County, and southern Greene County. I have grouped Fallsburg and South Fallsburg together. For hotels listed in the Ulster County Resort Association and the Ellenville
Vacationland Guide
, I have grouped Leurenkill hotels in Ellenville, since Leurenkill was not commonly used as a town name, and have grouped Briggs Highway hotels in Greenfield Park for the same reason. It is common to find the same hotel name used in different towns. Sometimes there would be four hotels with the same name. The word “camp” does not refer to a children’s camp but to an adult resort. Places listed as “cottage” or “cottages” are
not
bungalow colonies but small hotels with the name “cottage(s).” Most of these are or were primarily Jewish, but no distinction is made in listing them. People who know of other hotels not on the list should e-mail

Bungalow Colonies of the Catskills
A
bungalow colony list is an ongoing project of the Catskills Institute (
catskills.brown.edu
). It has been compiled by Phil Brown, Ben Kaplan, Irwin Richman, and Arthur Tanney, with help from others who have contributed names to our Web site and at our conferences. At present it contains 538 bungalow colonies, and we know there are many gaps, so we hope for readers’ additions. Most places have only a name, with “bungalow colony” as the understood rest of the name. Places with other names are listed that way, e.g., “cottages.” Fallsburg and South Fallsburg are grouped together under Fallsburg. Briggs Highway is included in Greenfield Park.
People who know of bungalow colonies not listed should e-mail

or write to Phil Brown, Department of Sociology, Brown University, Box 1916, Providence RI 02912, so that future listings in the Catskills Institute Archives will include them; updates are placed on the Web site at once. Please provide past and present names, owners’ names, and number of bungalows, if known. Postcards, photos, and other archival material are always welcome.
