The rider gives the tall friar an appraising glance. “You are fair for an Italian.”

“Not all Italians are swarthy, especially here in the north. I have German blood in me.”

The Englishman smiles. “Well, it seems we are wasting your time.”

“There is plenty of time here to waste. The days are long and there is no one to harry us.” He looks at his brother friar and smiles.

After they have gone, he stares after them. His companion kisses him on the cheek. “Forget about them, Eduardo,” he says in English. “You’re safe now.”

And they return to the vineyard and the slow Piedmont sun.
