“Yeah, I got it. Getting in my car to report. I’m not going to chase him. I have all the information we need to find the guy. Holler if you need anything.” Oglesbee headed over to their patrol car.
Ryan attempted to get the cloth under her leg without moving her, but it wasn’t possible. He placed pressure in the spot above the injury, hoping to slow the bleeding. He had seen enough injuries in the army to know what to do.
Her leg, she could lose her life or her leg. He knew what that was like. “Miss, I need you to wake up.” Nothing again. He would love to shake her, but a person with a possible neck injury should not be touched. He leaned into her ear and yelled. “Miss.”
Her eyes shot open, and he was startled to find himself staring into a pair of beautiful blue eyes. “Miss, my name is Officer Ramsay. You’ve been in an accident. I need your help, but please don’t move.”
Her dusky lips parted enough for a whisper. “Okay.”
“Can you wiggle your toes for me—just a bit?”
A pause, then, “Yes.”
“Okay, I need you to try to lift your left leg without moving your neck or your back. Half an inch is all I need.”
After a few moments, she whispered, “Is that enough?”
“Yes.” He slid the cloth underneath and quickly tied a tourniquet above her injury. “I know this isn’t the best solution, but I can’t put compression directly on the wound.”
“Why not?” Her gaze caught his and her right hand touched his arm.
“Because you have a piece of metal in your leg and I don’t want to remove it.”
His brother’s face appeared in the window. “Oglesbee is watching traffic. How is she?” Jake asked.
“Stable for now, but where’s the ambulance?”
“Oglesbee said ten minutes out. Lots of accidents tonight.”
“Good. We can last that long. Bring me a blanket.” He needed to try to stop the tremors that were spreading across her body. True, she was probably in shock, or headed that way, but the blanket would help protect her from the cold temperature.
His brother disappeared.
“Tell me the truth, Officer,” the women said to him in a quiet, musical voice. “I’m a nurse. I can handle it. There’s definitely major blood loss. Will I make it? It’s okay if I don’t.”
Ryan’s eyebrows rose as he caught her gaze. Had she really just said that?
Damn, it was exactly what he would say in this situation.
