“And you couldn’t?”

“I’m slow to learn.” He came towards her. “It’s warm in the valley; the sun is trapped here for much of the day. Why not take off some of your clothes?”
The desire in his eyes was unmistakable. “Why don’t you help me?”
His fingers made light work of the buttons on the coat he had given her. It looked as if it had been worn by an Eskimo, the fur super-soft. For the flight, it had been wonderful, now she was too hot. “I know. I understand your need to be near Serena.”
“So you’ll come with me?”
“Of course. These last few days have made me realise that it would be folly for us to live apart from the other dragons. When I was incapable of helping you, they stepped in. I need to know there are other people watching out for you.”
“And Dòmhnall?”
Zoah snorted. “I don’t want to call him my lord. But I’m not so proud that I would risk his wrath by snubbing him. If he wants to play Dragon Lord, then I will happily play obedient servant. But only because it suits me.”
“Of course,” she said, smiling to herself. When it came to pride, Zoah certainly had it in large enough quantities that he verged on being egotistical. There were bound to be clashes between him and the other dragons. At least he was willing to give them a chance.
“Anyway. I wouldn’t miss Tara giving him the run-around. Now he has staked his claim, he has to tame her.”
“Is that what you have to do with me?”
He laughed. “No. I think it’s the other way around. In your own way, you’ve tamed me, Charlotte.” He kissed her lips before murmuring, “And I couldn’t be happier.”
“I will remind you of that every day.”
“You already do. Just looking at your beautiful face makes me realise how lucky I am to have found my mate after all these long years. And this time I will hold onto you. I will never leave you again, Charlotte.”
Charlotte lay back, looking at the clouds. In this moment, she allowed herself to be happy. She let go of the problems their future might hold. This was one of those times when you had to live for the moment. And what a perfect moment it was.
