Vera smiled, pleased at Tanya’s honest enthusiasm. She appeared to be a straight shooter and just what Brinks needed.

“My first book’s not out yet. I’ve just sold it to be published. While recovering from my accident I wrote a romance story, which was weird because I’d never read romance and thought I’d write dramatic suspense. But, sometimes things happen in your life that have you re-evaluating everything.”

“You didn’t read romance?” The woman sounded horrified.

Vera shrugged, wondering what Tanya would say if she admitted she didn’t believe in romance, not the way it was written in books, anyway. Not until love knocked on her door.

“No.”

“The accident made you change?”

“The accident gave me time to see things differently and then I started writing how I felt. Words just flowed and before I knew it, I had a manuscript that my biggest critic,” she tipped her head toward Marcus, “thought was good enough to submit to someone he knew. The agent liked the story, shopped it around, and sold it to a publisher. I’m in the middle of rewrites now.”

Marcus squeezed her shoulder. Writing the manuscript hadn’t been easy. The process had been fraught with emotional landmines. When she’d written of her life with her grandmother and then the time of her passing, she’d cried so hard she couldn’t walk out of the room. Marcus had carried her to their bed and held her through the night.

The important thing was she had finished the story and an industry professional thought her writing had value.

“Wow, I’d love to read it. What’s the book about?” Tanya asked.

Vera coughed and looked behind her. “Marcus, you’ve read it. Why don’t you tell her?”

“It’s a story about a woman who didn’t believe in love, and thought she could write a script for her life to make it work. But she didn’t add in the human factor. She forgot that to receive the security she craved, she’d have to open the door to her heart just a bit. Once she does that, she’s floored by all the colors and textures of love. In the end, she tosses the script and embraces the love of her life. She finally realizes that life is an endless loop of giving and receiving, whether it’s love, affection, patience, understanding….” He shrugged, holding Vera’s eyes captive. “It’s everything.”

“Damn, I want to read that book,” Tanya said, causing the rest of them to laugh. “Let me know when it comes out.”

Choked by Marcus’ words, Vera nodded as she squeezed his hand tight. His lips brushed against her ear. Her fingertips grazed his collar.

“You’re my everything,” he whispered.

Erosa Knowles has a love for the written word. Originally from Miami, Florida, Ms. Knowles now resides in North Carolina with her teenaged son. Two older children are married and live in North Carolina as well. An avid reader since college, Ms. Knowles is one of those people who keeps her books as old friends and has re-read all of them at least once. Many have been read more often.
