criminal classes. I’d suggest, for instance, you try the police. Kimotho says that when a policeman wants to commit a murder he gets the Government to do the job for him with a rope. That shows how much influence we have in the highest quarters.”

Chris achieved a rather pallid smile. “I’ve

always heard the police were a fine body of men,”

she said.

“Taken one by one,” Vachell agreed. ”For

instance, take me. We should have a lot in

common Ч we’re in the same racket, you know.

We both hunt for our living. You chase innocent animals and I chase guilty men; you identify them by their footprints, and I use finger-prints to track them down. Otherwise the game is much the

same. We could have a lot of fun comparing notes.

I think you’d make a swell detective. In fact, I think you’d be swell at almost anything you did.”

“Perhaps, with practice, you might give up your 327

rather alarming habits of walking downwind into rhinos and tracking elephants backwards,” Chris suggested.

“I bet you’d study finger-prints upside down,”

Vachell retorted, “and walk downwind into the Police Commissioner before breakfast. The art of estimating the state of the Commissioner’s liver calls for far more delicate judgement than that required for merely testing the direction of the wind. I have a theory that everything depends on the phases of the moon. I’d like your opinion on that. In fact, I think we should get together and work out such important problems of technique.”

Chris smiled, and he saw that a faint flush of colour had returned to her cheeks.

“It might be quite a lot of fun,” she said.
