“I’m Joshua. This is my sister, Kenna.”
“Joshua, it’s good to meet you. You, too, Kenna.”
Joshua nodded his head solemnly. Kenna sniffled and took a deep, shaky breath.
“Why are you guys cooped up in here?”
“ ‘Cause Talle doesn’t want us unnerfoot, and Uncle Mitch doesn’t want us outside and inta trouble,” Joshua replied.
“Is that why Kenna’s been crying?”
“No. She’s sad ’cause Mama died.”
Christina tried to not let her pity show. “And you don’t know where your dad is?”
Joshua shook his head gravely.
“I see. Well, why don’t we three go out and explore? I promise I’ll keep you out of trouble. I think we’ll all feel better if we get some fresh air.”
Mitch and Hans were arguing vehemently when the noise ceased. Hans noticed it first. “Sh, sh, sh. Listen! The girl’s stopped crying. It’s a sign.”
Mitch snorted. “A sign? That Christina is a God-sent messenger waiting to take us to the treasure marked with a big red X?”
“That she’ll be good for you, maybe in more ways than one …”
“Hans, I don’t need a wife … I need a nanny. And
you’re
my partner. Why would you want somebody else—especially some Ph.D. twit—to step in between us?”
“She wouldn’t be between us. Our twosome would just become a threesome. If it doesn’t work out, we can just say good-bye to Dr.Alvarez. And if it does work …”
“I’ve never seen a threesome work. Particularly when there’s a woman present.”
Hans leaned back in his chair. “I think it would be good for Treasure Seekers to add a ‘brain’ to the team, even temporarily. At least hear the woman out.”
“No way. I’ve got enough to worry about without a Spanish hothead on my team.”
“Mitch …”
But Mitch turned away and dialed the boat launch on the big island again. “I said no way. Where’s that boat captain? He should’ve been back at San Esteban an hour ago!”
