Indira Gandhi with toddler Rahul. Indira is said to have doted on her first grandchild. She would often steal time from her busy schedule as prime minister to be with him and Priyanka.

Rajiv Gandhi with a fourteen-year-old Rahul on 5 November 1984 at Teen Murti Bhavan in New Delhi, a few days after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s death. Rajiv’s prime ministership was ushered in suddenly by his mother’s brutal assassination at the hands of her Sikh bodyguards on 31 October that year. His life and political career ended abruptly on 21 May 1991 at the hands of Sri Lankan Tamil insurgents. Both events affected Rahul’s life significantly.

Rahul Gandhi with Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah at an election rally at Vijaypur, 35 kilometres from Jammu, in April 2009. Rahul was instrumental in Omar getting the position of chief minister of the northern Indian state, in January 2009, where the Congress and the National Conference are in a coalition. Omar’s grandfather Sheikh Abdullah was a friend of Rahul’s great-grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Jai Prakash Agarwal (right), offers a garland to Party general secretary Rahul Gandhi (centre) during the eighty-third plenary session of the Indian National Congress in New Delhi on 19 December 2010. Rahul used the occasion to assert the supremacy of the Party over the government and rebuked ministers for not giving enough time to party workers.

Rahul interacts with Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel at the release function of the Party’s manifesto on 24 March 2009 at 24 Akbar Road, New Delhi. Rahul got subject experts to make presentations to the committee drafting the manifesto so that they could get a better grip on the country’s problems. In day-to-day affairs, Rahul has mostly kept his distance from the old guard in the Party represented by the likes of Patel.

Rahul with Digvijaya Singh, the Congress general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh, and other members of his core team (in silhouette) at a congregation of Bhatta—Parsaul farmers in Greater Noida on 11 May 2011. A close adviser of Rahul, Singh has been advocating his taking over both the Party leadership and the prime minister’s post for a long time.

Rahul Gandhi with locals at Nangla Bhatana village about 80 kilometres from New Delhi, on 7 July 2011, during his ‘Kisan Sandesh Yatra’—the three-day march on foot he led through western Uttar Pradesh. Rahul joined farmers protesting against the acquisition of their land by the state government headed by Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati. The 2012 assembly election in Uttar Pradesh pitches the two against each other.

Rahul Gandhi inaugurated the Guru Tegh Bahadur Memorial, dedicated to the ninth Sikh guru, near the Delhi-Haryana border on 30 July 2011. He thanked the Sikhs saying, ‘Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is taking the nation forward. You gave him to us and for this, the entire nation is thankful to you.’ Rahul has been trying to build bridges with the community given the violent events of 1984.

With sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in New Delhi on 28 September 2011. The two distributed 220 three-wheeled scooters to the physically challenged at a programme organized by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. With Sonia suffering from an undisclosed ailment that required surgery in August 2011, many in the Party expect Priyanka to take the plunge into electoral politics in the next Lok Sabha election.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi shortly after Singh’s government won the July 2008 trust vote. Singh has said, more than once, that he would be happy to make way for someone younger.
