Bonita smiles.   “Princess, regardless what you think, Zaak is my husband.  And I want him back.”

“You’re dreaming, Bonita.”  The princess smiles like nothing unpleasant has happened.  She walks gracefully to the window, smells the flowers in a vase and then walks back.

“Why would the greatest general of Atlantis fall in love with a servant?  See, he comes back, and he is back for
me
.”  Her eyes are shining. “God…” She whispers, looking far into the pretty view outside the window.

“I won his heart in a battle, princess.” Bonita says quietly.

“You?  In a battle?  When? Where?  How?” The princess steps close.  Her smile disappears completely.

“In a space battle between two warships.”

“What?  A spa…ce? A big room?  Oh, Lord.” The princess shakes her head.

“That’s deep in the sky, Princess.”

“What?  You flew ships in the sky?  Gosh, tell me you’re not dreaming.”  The princess laughs loud.  Suddenly she stops.  “Are you… are you a, a goddess?” She steps back and drops into her chair.  “I’m sorry, Bonita.” She almost cries.  Now she remembers that Bonita flew down from the sky.

“You want a ride in my ship?” A tiny smile appears at Bonita’s mouth corners.

“Oh, no.”  The princess’ cheeks are all pale.

“Yes,
you do.
” Bonita stands up and looks right into the princess’s eyes.

Chapter One

“Zaak, are you sure we’re approaching Cincinnati, Ohio?” Bonita asks, worried.

Bonita and Zaak are taking a test ride in their brand-new family spaceship Lamborrari DS, a replacement for their last ship, still marooned on Le Jura. Like the last, this particular model promised to ‘travel anywhere in universes without you raising a finger’.

“Positive.” Zaak grins, pointing at the control panel.  “See, here, it says… wait… fuck, what’s going on?”

Bonita takes a quick look. Their destination glowed softly on the dashboard: ‘Atlantis: Landing…’

“Zaak, Zaak!  Where are we?”

“You tell me, Bonita.  It’s an Earth place, isn’t it?”

Bonita thinks for a few moments and then mumbles, “Hmmm, Atlantis, Atlantis, it does sound familiar.  Hmmm… so… odd.”

“Is this another city near Cincinnati?  Please tell me it is.” Zaak looks at her with a nervous smile.

“Oh, no, it can’t be.   See the ocean?  Ohio’s in the Midwest. There is no ocean.”

“You sure?”

“Of course I am,” snorts Bonita, waving her hands, “This place looks too strange…”

The landscape flashing by beneath their ship is nothing she’s ever encountered before. Silver and gold temples, distorted by the domed glass floor of their ship, rise in concentric circles to the sky. She is sure that none of the recent oceanic colonies are built this large, or this intricately.  The architecture is just astounding.

“Atlantis… Hmmm…”  Bonita’s eyes widen.  “Um… Zaak, I think we’re heading backwards in time.  Atlantis is an ancient, and legendary city...we learned about it in grade school, Shoot, I can’t believe it’s actually real!”

“What? A
legendary
city?”

“Yup.  See, everything in the legend is right here.  See the rings in the city?”

Zaak looks.  Bonita is right.  The huge city is arranged in five rings, one inside of other.  A few water channels go from the center of the city to the coast.  Large sailing ships are everywhere on the ocean.

“We’re definitely not in the right time or place. Zaak, let’s go back, I’m not sure we should mess about here.” Bonita urges.

Zaak thinks for a moment and then grins, “Let’s have some fun, Bonita.”

“What?”

“Why don’t we go visit the city?”

“Are you crazy, Zaak?  What if…”

“‘What if’ what?  They are humans, right?  We weren’t scared of the dinosaurs on Le Jura.  Why would we be afraid of ancient people?” Zaak gives Bonita a quick kiss.  “Trust me.  We’ll be okay.”

“Okay… I, um, trust you.”  Bonita murmurs. She’s not so sure. Her vacations with Zaak are never as relaxing as she hoped.

Zaak switches the control to manual and directs the miniature spaceship to touch down at the highest peak of the island.

He opens the door, looks outside and takes a deep breath.   “The air is so fresh.”  He steps out.  “Bonita, check it out, a big temple.”

“Oh, really?” Bonita raises an eyebrow, standing up.

Zaak grabs her hand and smiles, “Watch your step, wife.”

The temple is indeed, splendid. Built entirely of gold and silver, gently manipulated into soft arches and curved roofs, it sits dignified and imposing upon its foundations.

“How did they
do
this?”  They walk closer and look at the temple record on a large carved marble slab inset into its wall.

“See, here, it tells the history of the island.”  Bonita begins to read.  “The Empire of Atlantis begins at the beginning of time.”

“Really, that early?” Zaak’s eyes widen.

“Yup.  That’s what it says.”  Bonita smiles and continues.  “The god Poseidon received Atlantis, an island larger than Libya and Asian combined.  He chose for a wife the mortal woman Cleito, and with her began the royal family of Atlantis.”

“Really?  This land was ruled by gods?”

“Oh, shush, Zaak, it’s only a legend, okay?” Then she blushes.  “Um, well it
was
only a legend…but I guess that’s debatable now.”

She clears her throat to hide her embarrassment and then continues with the reading.  The record tells how Poseidon uses his power to carve five concentric rings of water and land on the island and how he gives the lands to his ten sons.   “Atlas, the first son, was made king over the vast territory by his father.”

They walk into the temple and see a set of royal family paintings.   Zaak stops at a portrait and looks carefully.  “A warrior.”  He murmurs.

“That must be a great warrior for the royal family.”

“It must be.”  He looks at the portrait for a while and then turns to Bonita, “Guess what?”

“What?”

“I could be him.”

“WHAT?” Bonita’s eyes round and widen.  “Are you crazy, Zaak?”

Chapter Two

“No, I’m not crazy, Bonita.”  Zaak grins happily.  “Don’t forget that I’m a Caludirian and every Caludirian can morph to any shape they want.”

“You want to morph into… that guy?”  Bonita looks at her husband and then stares at the warrior painting.

“Why not?”

“Um… no.  I don’t like the idea.  No.” Bonita thinks for a while and then shakes her head.   She doesn’t want her husband to look like someone else.   “Zaak?  ZAAK!” She steps back.   God, her husband Zaak has turned into that warrior.

“Do I look good, Bonita?”  Zaak grins, closing in on her with his arms raised.

“God no, this is too weird.”  Bonita steps back.  “Go back to you, please.”

“I want to marry you, my servant.”  The warrior lowers his voice and looks right into her eyes with a huge grin.

“Zaak… Ew! C’mon…stop it!” Bonita backs out the large temple doors, both arms raised.

The bright light of Atlantis glints off a thousand silver and gold shields, blinding Bonita momentarily. It takes her only a second to realize what’s happening.

“Zaak, quick, there’s something weird going on outside,” she gasps, stepping quickly and quietly back into the main chamber of the temple.

“What the heck is going on?”   Zaak’s eyes round.

“There’s an army.  They’re coming.”

Zaak rushes out and hoists himself onto the overhang of the temple roof. What he sees from this vantage point gives him chills. A huge army surrounds the hill.   Weapons glint with the subtle movements of the soldiers, their large shields and heavy maces strapped to their backs as they creep up the hill silently.  Behind them, are soldiers with bows and arrows, ready to shoot.

Zaak rushes to the top of a big rock at the edge of the hill and his arms raises in surrender.   “Hey, friends, we’re only visitors, okay?  Please, take it easy, we can talk.”

A tall, broad officer, his uniform almost invisible under myriad badges and medals, step out from the crowd.  “You fly evil.  Stay away from our Royal Temple.  Surrender or die.”

“Zaak, let’s leave.  This is their holy place. Let’s just get out of here,” Bonita tugs at her husband’s arm, its girth and strange Atlantian texture unfamiliar beneath her hands.

“Don’t worry, Bonita, we can talk with them.”  Zaak grins, confident. He gives his wife a reassuring pat, before turning back to the advancing lines. “Look, we’re friendly people from… Ouch!”

A shower of stones from numerous slings send Zaak to the ground.   “Holy fuck!  You asshole!” He holds his leg with both hands and howls.  “You mother fucker, wait ‘til I stand up.”  He struggles to sit up.  “Fuck!  That hurt…” He drops flat with a bleeding forehead.

“Zaak, oh, God, Zaak, you okay?  ZAAK!”  Zaak’s eyes are tightly closed.
Gosh, he passed out.  Is he going to die?

“Zaak, oh, please, wake up…” Bonita holds his body.   “Zaak, please, don’t die.  Wake up.  Let’s go home.”

Zaak opens his eyes.  He looks at Bonita and smiles weakly.  His mouth moves a few times but no sound comes out.

“Zaak, please, talk to me.”

Zaak struggles a few times.  Finally he sits up and looks at Bonita.

“Zaak, you okay now?”

He looks at her for a long time.  A pale smile appears on his face.  “Who are you?” He mumbles, staring harder.

“Zaak?  It’s me, Bonita, your wife.” Bonita tries so hard to hold back her tears.

“Bonita?”

“Uh-huh, it’s me.”

Zaak thinks hard and then smiles again.   “Yes, Bonita.   Hmmm… right…” He thinks again and finally mumbles.  “My servant.  Bonita.  Great.”

“Zaak.  I’m your wife.  Goddammit!”

“Get them.”  Bonita hears a cold voice.  She raises her head and sees a plumed warrior.    Around him are soldiers with weapons.

Bonita struggles and screams.  But soon she is held tight by two big soldiers.

“Leave me alone.  You’ve hurt him, you bastard.” She stares at the warrior.

The warrior looks at Zaak.  “Who the fuck is this assh…” His voice stops suddenly.  Now he is looking at Zaak with much greater respect.  Suddenly he drops on his right knee.  “Commander Wouter Aja…  Is it you?”

Zaak rolls his eyes and shrugs.  He is so confused by this silly warrior.   Gradually, his bleeding pale face is covered by a cold smile.  “If you think so.” He murmurs.
Asshole, let’s have some fun.

“Commander Aja.  Commander Aja!”  The warrior stands up and announces.  “The Temple’s words have come true, brothers!  The greatest commander in the history of our Empire has returned!  We are saved!”

The warrior drops to his knee, hand on heart.   “Commander Aja, welcome home…”  Finally, he stands up and raises his arm high to silence the deafening cheers of the soldiers.

He turns back to look at the blood on Zaak’s face.  Then his eyes drop down.   “I beg your mercy, Commander.”

Zaak thinks for a moment or two and then smiles lightly, “You have my mercy.”

“Thank you, Commander.”  The warrior looks at Bonita and then turns back to Zaak, “And she is your…”

“Wife.” Bonita says immediately.

Zaak looks at her and thinks hard.

“Zaak, I’m your wife Bonita.  Can’t you remember?”

“Zaak?” The warrior looks at him.

Zaak is totally confused.  He thinks for a long while and then chuckles, “Nickname, I guess.”

“And she is…?”

It doesn’t take long for Zaak to figure out the answer.   “My servant.” He grins.

“ZAAK!” Bonita screams.

“Let’s go see the King.” The warrior smiles.   “I am Lorcan, the leading warrior of the army.”

“Lorcan.” Zaak gives him a tiny smile.   “Please lead the way back to the palace.”

“Yes, sir.” Lorcan bows down.  Then he turns to an officer beside him, “Guard the temple and the…” He looks at the spaceship and then Zaak.

“The...” Zaak thinks hard and then smiles at Bonita.

“The spaceship.  Tell them it’s a
private
property.” Bonita whispers at his ear.

“The spaceship.” Zaak repeats aloud.

“Yes, the spa… space, um…” He stares at the officer.   “Whatever the fuck it is, I don’t want even a mosquito to touch it.”

“Yes, sir!”  The officer signals with his arm.  Immediately, a team of soldiers respond, spreading out to stand guard around the hill top.

They walk down the hill slowly.   “Commander Aja…”

“Call me Zaak.”

“Zaak?”

“Um… shit… Okay, call me… Wouter.”

“I dare not, Commander.”

“Why not?  You have my mercy.”

“Okay… Commander, um, Wouter.  See, we have been expecting your return for a long time.”

“You mean I… left?”  He looks at the Lorcan and then smiles.  “Died?”

“Oh, no.  You… um returned to the sea four hundred years ago.  But the oracles in the Royal Temple predicted that your return.  We have been expecting you, Comman… um, Wouter.”

“So… you need my help?”

“Yes.”

“For a war?”

“You know everything, Wouter.”

“You’re in trouble?”

“Um, yeah, there have been…some disturbances.”

“Hmmm?” Zaak is the General Commander of the modern Caludirian Army.  Surely he knows that these people must be in big trouble.  Else they wouldn’t have hoped that their greatest commander would reincarnate from the past.

“You know everything, Commander.  I beg your mercy for my… lie.  We’re in big trouble but I don’t want to worry you too early.”

“You have my mercy and
nothing
can worry me, Lorcan.”  Zaak’s voice is flat.
