Then began the most intensive search ever for a lost plane. Ten ships and sixty-five planes searched for two weeks but neither the plane nor the bodies were ever found. Theories still abound about what happened that fateful day. Was Amelia Earhart a spy for the government on a secret mission, using the around-the-world flight as cover? Was she rescued by the Japanese and interred in a prison camp during World War II? These are just a few of the imaginative theories surrounding her disappearance.
Amelia Earhart was the first modern American heroine, adored because she was daring and successful in a man’s world. The most famous female aviator of the twentieth century, she achieved many firsts and opened up the field for women as pilots and engineers. Ironically, her disappearance kept her in the public consciousness more than if she had completed the flight. Hundreds of articles and books have been written about her in the more than seventy years since her plane disappeared, keeping her accomplishments alive for an entire generation of female aviators. Amelia lived her life as if she were invincible, but in the end she proved to be as mortal as anyone.
