But if any other man had seen you on TV and come after you it would have been grounds for a restraining order
. Luckily my brain was still function and wouldn’t betray me to my confused heart. Was I going to give him a free pass because he was rich and the object of my fantasies? No I wouldn’t. I couldn’t.

Chapter 8

I thought it was all over when I got home, but I realized things had just begun. When I walked through the door of my apartment I nearly fell over. My place had been completely redone. Someone had cleaned it and refurnished it with all new furniture. I collapsed onto the floor, taking it all in.

“He did this?” I said out loud. I couldn’t believe it. Now he was buying me? I couldn’t tell if I was still creeped out or flattered.

I noticed my cell phone sitting on the table, realizing I didn’t have it the entire time I had been gone. There were several missed calls from my mother and Selina and a few from numbers I didn’t recognize.

“You have eight new messages,” the voicemail bot said to me. I quickly skipped the ones from my mom and Selina, wanting to find out what the other messages were.

“Amy Davis? This is Rich Peters with Sony. I have a huge opportunity for you; give me a call to discuss the details. “

I was stunned, someone from Sony wanted me? I clicked to the next message. It was from a director who wanted to personally audition me for his summer blockbuster. What the hell? The next call was from a TV producer who wanted me to be the star of his new sitcom. Who were these guys and how did they know about me?

“Ace,” I said as it washed over me. This was all his doing. Then the last voicemail played.

“Amy it’s Ace. I did some thinking and I realize how you must feel. I understand that I went overboard, but if you understood the position I’m in then you would know why I went to such extremes. I have to be completely sure you are the one Amy. You don’t know how many women want me for my money and nothing else. I admit I became infatuated with you after that commercial, but I also fell in love with you. You just seemed like the perfect all-American girl. Then I set all of this up to meet you. I didn’t want us to meet on normal terms, I was afraid you would just see me as the billionaire. So I set up the fake competition, thinking you would just be yourself to try to win. I even hired Cookie to act like the extreme opposite, hoping you would be yourself instead of trying to top that. In the hot tub everything I suspected about you was prov…..”

The voicemail ended, probably cut off due to the length. There were no more messages, maybe he hadn’t known it was finished.

I sunk down into my new chair and stared at the ceiling. He was a billionaire playboy, he wasn’t used to dealing with real people. Every woman he met was after his money, he had to be sure. But why put me on a game show where the object was to win his affection and money? It still didn’t add up, but I was starting to come around. It was still incredibly creepy and wrong, but I was beginning to see why he had done it.

Apparently I had some auditions to go on though.

Thanks to Ace,
I thought. It was thanks to Ace, but he owed me now. He owed me big time after kidnapping me and lying to my face. He had to realize that just because you’re rich you can’t manipulate people and get what you want. I was starting to get angry again at the thought of him thinking he could manipulate me into loving him. What a terrible thing to do.

I picked up the phone to call these people back when something he said ran through my head.

“This is not over,” was the last thing he said to me on the island. There was fire in his eyes when he said it, a bold determination that I’m sure he got every time he closed an important business deal.

I wasn’t done with Ace Pearson, our relationship was just beginning.
