Before I could reach it, Dom grabbed my wrist and pulled me in close to him.  I looked up and sa
w the pain in his face that I was
dreading.

“You can have a life with me.  I will take care of you.”

“I have a job-
”

“You won’t need a job.  You don’t need to do anything.”  He leaned down close to my ear and whispered to me, “Please.  Just give me a chance.”

My heart was racing.  I couldn’t put together the words to express how torn I felt right then.

Please don’t walk away

he said.

His words resonated inside of me like a bullet.  As a solitary tear ran down my cheek, I looked over my shoulder to the tall windows of the terminal.  Ari was sitting there by herself, waiting and looking slightly concerned.  When I turned back to Dom, his eyes pleaded with me.  His very soul was begging for me to stay; to stay with him.

I bit my lip and closed my eyes, “Maybe it is time to stop running.”

He kissed me

s stubbly cheeks as he did.  While
I rested there in his arms, I felt a
n overwhelming
lightness
.  I was afraid that if he let me go I might float away into
the ether just like the s
hell of a life that I was leaving behind.

“Yes,” he said after pulling back but not letting go, “you’ll never have to run again.  I promise.”

lane by herself that day.  I went back
to the limo with Dom and we left everything else behind.  And as we rolled slowly back toward the resort, I could only look out of the window at the shimmering coast and wonder where this new path was going to lead.
  As long as Dom was by my side, I knew that I
was prepared
to hang up those running shoes
for good
.
