“Name's Peter Spenser. My friends call me Pete. This joint's a little wild for me. I was just on my way out the door when I saw you two sitting here alone."

June felt something stirring deep inside her. Maggie said coldly, “We're not alone. Buzz has gone to get us another round of drinks."

Pete smiled at Maggie. “Buzz wouldn't mind if you have one dance with me, would he?"

“I don't care to dance,” Maggie said.

He turned to June. “How about you, pretty lady?"

June giggled. “I'm just learning. I'm not very good."

“I'm not very good either,” he said as he moved to her side. “Maybe we can learn together."

“I don't know. Maggie, do you think it would be okay?"

“Petey! You son of a gun. Where did you come from?” Buzz shouted as he set the drinks on the table.

“Well I'll be a monkey's uncle if it isn't Buzz Adams. How in the hell are you?"

The old friends embraced.

“Maggie, this is Petey Spenser. Petey, meet Maggie Skinner and I guess you know June Dinkins."

“I don't think I've had the pleasure."

June extended her hand and shivered as he took it.

“Sure, you know June. She was in school with us at Charlotte High."

Pete shook his head. “How could I forget such a beautiful lady?"

“I wasn't beautiful then,” June said, “and besides, I was a couple of grades behind you."

“You with somebody, Petey?” Frank asked.

“Nah, I was just tired of sitting alone in a motel room and thought I'd get out a while."

“Well, hell, pull up a chair and join us."

“Is it okay, ladies? Pete asked.

Maggie nodded and June giggled, “I'll sit on your lap if you can't find a chair."

“Gals,” Buzz said as Pete dragged a chair from the next table, “Petey was the linebacker on our team at Charlotte High. He went on to play for Wake Forest."

“That's true,” Pete said as he sat down. “I'm the cause of Wake having four consecutive losing seasons."

Buzz laughed and slapped his buddy on the back. “Not true. You led the ACC in tackles all four years. I thought I read in the paper you were drafted by the Redskins."

“I was,” Petey laughed. “Drafted and cut. Hell, I wasn't with the Skins long enough to get grass stains on my britches. You have to be smart these days to play pro ball. That never was my long suit."

“What are you doing now, buddy?"

“The Panthers let me attend their tryout camp. It's going good. I've lasted ten days. Of course,” he laughed, “I may be cut tomorrow."

“No way. You're the best linebacker in the business."

“I wish you were right,” Pete laughed.

“You ever hear from the old gang?"

“Nah, I've lost touch with everybody."

“How about that gal you were serious about?"

“Shelly? The last I heard she was in Las Vegas dancing in a chorus line and trying to hump her way to the top."

“I thought she wanted to be a movie star?"

“She did, but hey—look at me. I wanted to play football in the NFL."

“You'll make it one day, Petey. I know you will."

“Yeah, well, maybe she will too."

There was an awkward silence as the friends realized they had little left in common.

“Oh,” Pete said, his face brightening. “I did run into Sonny Rider in a bar in DC a couple of years ago. He told a tall tale about your favorite teacher."

Buzz grimaced. “Deborah Andrews?"

“Yeah. That's her last name now. It slipped my mind. Anyway, Sonny said she married a rich old codger."

Buzz nodded. “She did. She's the school principal in Dot where I live. Her old man died of a heart attack shortly after they were married."

“That isn't the way Sonny tells it. He claims she fucked him to death."

Maggie sat stoically in her seat while Buzz roared with laughter and June giggled much too loud.

Pete looked at June. “How about that dance, Miss June?"

“What do you think, Buzz? Am I ready?"

“You have to try your wings sometime."

As Pete stood up, so did Buzz. “Hey, man, go easy on her,” Buzz said as he wrapped his arm around Pete's shoulders. “She young and innocent. I mean really innocent."

“Looks underage to me, too, old buddy, but I won't tell,” Pete grinned. “Relax, man. I'm not going to rape her. That isn't my style."

Maggie sat at the table in the darkened club and watched June and Pete gyrate in time with the loud, booming music.

“She's drunk, you know,” Maggie said.

Buzz nodded. “She's doing great, though, and looks like she's having a good time."

Maggie nodded her agreement.

Buzz placed his hand on hers. “Maggie, were you drunk last night? Is that why you, uh..."

“I wasn't drunk, Buzz. I wanted you as badly last night as I want you right now."

“Damn. I mean ... Maggie, you know I've been around, but last night with you was different and I'm not handing you a line."

“It was different for me, too,” Maggie said. “Let's dance."

One dance followed another. Maggie wanted the night to last forever.

“Am I doing okay, Pete?"

“You're doing great, June Bug. I've never danced with such a good partner."

“Why did you dance me over into this corner?"

“We can go back if you wish. I just didn't like Buzz staring at us."

“It's okay,” June slurred. “Do you like to watch me shake my boobs?"

“What?"

“Buzz says I should shake my boobs like this when I dance. He says it turns guys on."

“I'm turned on all right, June, but you're safe with me."

“Pete, I don't feel so good,” she said. “I think I drank too much. Maybe we'd better sit down."

“Head dizzy?” he asked as he produced an aspirin tin from his pocket. “This will take care of it in no time."

“Aspirin?"

“Yeah.” He opened the tin and took out three blue tablets. “Stick your tongue way out,” he urged.

She complied and he placed the tablets as far back on her tongue as he could reach.

June swallowed and said, “I never saw blue aspirin before."

“They're new on the market,” he explained. “Supposed to give faster relief than regular aspirin."

The lights dimmed even more and the DJ at last put a slow tune on the turntable.

Maggie felt Buzz's hard body press against hers as she lazily draped her arms over his shoulders. “I haven't danced this much in years,” she said. “I'm exhausted.” She kissed his neck and felt him press his erection against her. She gently massaged it with her pubic bone.

“Oh, baby,” he groaned.

“Buzz, we either must sit down and cool off or get in the back seat of your car. I'm on fire."

“Baby, you like this?” Pete purred, groping June's buttocks as their bodies swayed in time with the music.

“Mmmm."

He inched up her skirt until he could place his hands on her panty-covered cheeks. “Baby, you light my fire."

He kept one hand on her bottom and squeezed her breast with the other.

“We shouldn't be doing this,” she said dreamily after he broke the kiss.

He squeezed her breast again, slipped his hand inside her panties, found and fingered her anus. “June Bug, your tits feel great. Let me see them. It's so dark in here, nobody will notice.” He slid his hand from her buttocks to her crotch, gently tugging at her pubic hair, opening her labia and stroking her engorged clitoris.

She moaned and pressed against his probing fingers.

“Please, baby. Let me see your tits. Just one little peek."

“Not ... not here,” she gasped.

He smiled and steered her towards a fire door. “Unless I miss my guess, that door leads to a very dark and deserted parking lot,” he purred, his hand again on her bottom.

“Maggie,” Buzz began when they were again seated at the table, “I ... I haven't amounted to much in my life so far, but if I can do a one eighty, do you think there is any possibility of us having a future together?"

“I think we have a good thing going already, Buzz."

“I'm not talking about a nightly roll in the hay, Maggie."

“Buzz Adams, surely you're not asking me to marry you."

“No, but I am asking if you think that one day you might consider it."

“Little white house, picket fence and tiny feet running around?"

“I don't know about the tiny feet,” he laughed.

“I'm not ready to tie myself down, Buzz."

“I know. Me either. It's just that..."

“Let's just take it one day at a time.” Suddenly she felt guilty as she remembered clutching Buzz Adams’ body last night with her shapely legs while visualizing George Bennett's penis pounding inside her convulsing vagina.

Buzz continued to look at her. She forced her eyes to scan the dance floor. “Buzz,” she said, concern in her voice. “I don't see June."

He joined her visual search. “Shit,” he said as he stood up.

Together they forced their way through the crowd. She grasped his arm. “Buzz, I don't like this."

“Me either,” Buzz said as he stood on tiptoe, trying to look over the mob.

She tugged on his arm and motioned towards the wall. “Where does that door lead?” she asked.

“It's a fire exit,” he replied. “I think it leads to the parking lot in back of the building."

Maggie pushed the door open a few inches. “Buzz,” she screamed.

He pushed past her into the darkness of the parking lot.

June's dress, brassiere and panties lay crumpled on the asphalt. She was lying across the hood of a car with Pete between her legs, pushing down his pants.

“You son-of-a-bitch,” Buzz screamed as he hurled his body into the startled man.

They tumbled to the asphalt and Buzz pounded two blows to Pete's face before the linebacker recovered his senses.

The larger man easily rolled Buzz over as patrons streamed into the parking lot from the club. Pete's first right cross dazed Buzz, a knee to the groin kept him from defending his face from another right cross. Pete scrambled to his feet, pulling Buzz up with him, landed a blow to the solar plexus and, as Buzz doubled over in pain, Pete delivered a powerful uppercut.

“Break it up, damn it. Break it up, guys.” Four bouncers pulled the combatants apart.

One burly man pressed his face close to Pete's. “You have two choices—both of you. Get the hell out of here and don't come back or we'll call the law."

“Hey, man,” Pete said, backing away. “I don't want any trouble."

“You bastard,” Buzz said with blood streaming from his lower lip, “I told you to leave her alone.” He struggled against the grip of the bouncer who held him.

“The bitch wanted it, man,” Pete said. “Shit, she took her own fucking clothes off and begged me to screw her."

Buzz looked towards June. She was again wearing her dress and was sobbing into Maggie's shoulder. He joined them, put his arm around June's waist and helped Maggie guide her back to his car.

“Our purses,” Maggie said with alarm. “They are on the table."

“I'll get them,” Buzz said as he helped June into the back seat.

“Buzz, you're bleeding. Here. Use this,” Maggie said, pulling a handful of tissues from her pocket.

A bouncer stopped Buzz at the door. “The ladies left their purses on the table,” Buzz explained.

“Man, they're probably gone by now. You keep your ass right here. Where were you sitting? I'll see if I can find them."

Buzz pointed in the general direction and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the bouncer returning with two clutch bags in his hand.

“Look, man. We ain't stupid,” the bouncer said as he handed the purses to Buzz. “We know it wasn't your fault. You can come back if you like."

Buzz nodded and turned to leave.

“Man, that lip is busted up bad. You might ought to have a doc take a look."

Buzz nodded again and returned to his car. Maggie was holding a sobbing June in her arms.

“What's that stink?” he asked as he slid behind the steering wheel.

“She threw up,” Maggie explained. “I don't think any got on your car, but she has it all over the front of her dress."

Buzz rolled down his window and cranked the car.

“Frank,” June sobbed. “Frank, I'm so sorry."

“It's okay, June,” Maggie said as she pulled June closer. “You'll be okay."

“Frank, I'm so sorry."

“June, nothing happened."

“Frank, I love you. I wanted you to be the first."

“June, honey,” Maggie said. “You are still a virgin. Buzz got there just in time."

“Pete didn't..."

“No, baby. Buzz didn't let him."

“Oh, God, Maggie. I'm sick."

The car screeched to a halt at the side of the road. Maggie pushed the door open and held June's forehead as the girl again regurgitated.

As he eased back onto the pavement, Buzz tried to make his voice light. “June, sweetheart, I think in the future you need to stay away from the hard stuff."

“Pills,” she mumbled.

“What pills?” Maggie asked.

“Blue aspirin."

“Damn!” Buzz said as he slammed his hands onto the steering wheel.

“You know what she's talking about?” Maggie asked.

“Yeah. You ever heard of date-rape pills?"

“The bastard,” Maggie hissed.

“Frank, honey, I'm so sorry."

“It wasn't your fault,” Buzz said. “Pete drugged you."

“She's out,” Maggie said.

“Poor thing,” Buzz replied. “It's my damn fault."

“Buzz! You risked your life to protect her."

“I'm the one who brought you girls to this dive,” he muttered.

They traveled the remainder of the road to Dot in silence.

“You think you can lift her?” Maggie asked when they parked beside the Dollar Building.

“Yeah. Help me slid her to the edge of the seat."

He struggled with the dead weight in his arms but managed to get June to her apartment door.

Maggie found the key in June's purse. “Take her to the bathroom and put her in the tub. I'll try to clean her up."

Buzz paced the living room, listening to sounds emerging from the bathroom. Finally, he heard June's voice.

“Maggie, I'm so ashamed. Frank will never have anything to do with me now."

Buzz could not hear Maggie's reply. He continued to pace.

“Buzz, I need you,” Maggie shouted.
