GEORGE VECSEY
has been a sports columnist for
The New York Times
since 1982. He specializes in international sports, such as the World Cup of soccer, the Tour de France, the Olympics, and Wimbledon, but considers baseball his favorite sport to cover because of the daily soap opera and opportunity to interview players and managers. Vecsey has written a dozen books, including
Coal Miner’s Daughter
for Loretta Lynn, later made into an Academy Award–winning movie. A graduate of Jamaica High and Hofstra College, he considers himself a New York boy who has lived in Kentucky and traveled extensively in Europe. He is married to Marianne Graham, an artist, and their three children have all worked in journalism.
