Read The Birth of Vengeance (Vampire Formula #1) Online
Authors: P.A. Ross
He staggered back but regained his footing then kept coming forward. He seemed unstoppable. I tried to think of what to do next when Thorn crashed into the side of his body ripping, tearing and smashing away in a terrifying cycle of claws and fangs. I had never seen her give everything, and I realised how powerful she really is and how dangerous. Finally, the monster’s body began to break down under the severity of damage, the physical construct of his body giving up as it continued distorting and growing. It started to burst at the seams. Flesh and bones erupted out and onto the floor and continued bubbling and contorting on its own. An arm broke off, and his jaws ripped off under Thorn’s attack. The damage reached a critical point, and the monster exploded across the clearing. I ducked and covered my hands across my face to shield it from the flying flesh. Thorn flew backwards again but landed and rolled out of the way. The head fired back into the trees smashing the lantern and plunging the clearing into darkness.
I took a deep breath. The full moon came to my rescue providing enough light to make out shapes and figures moving about. In the light of the full moon, Thorn picked herself off the ground and made sure the monster was dead. Lumps of flesh and bone were still bubbling and contorting in piles of atrocious mess that covered the clearing. It dripped down from the trees and splattered against the tree trunks dissolving the bark on contact. Steam rose from the piles of flesh and bone, and it stunk worse than off meat. I turned my face away in disgust. Why didn’t the formula work on him? Maybe it was just a bad batch and I had been lucky before, or I was special, hence all the effort into me testing it. Yet more questions I had for the people behind my betrayal.
The clouds swept across the sky masking the full moon and the clearing dived into pitch darkness. I couldn’t see my hands in front of my face but I felt the blood dripping off them. I stood silently in this dark place.
Suddenly, light footsteps sounded behind me and a rush of wind breezed across my back. Thorn’s hot hand slipped into my bloodied one.
“V, you are my protector, my saviour,” she said, and brushed the mud and tears away from my face and kissed my stained cheek.
She pulled at my hand but I was frozen to the spot looking at the contorting bubbling flesh covering the clearing.
“We can’t stay here my love.”
“I want my revenge, and I want to know if the formula is safe,” I said.
“You need to learn about the wider world and your place in it now that your training is complete. There are people who can help us,” she said. “Come V, I have a brand new world to show you. The truth of the vampire world and the riches it has to offer await. It will help you understand and help us plot our revenge. Something big is happening with these needles requiring such deception. Our destinies our bound together for a reason,” she said.
I relaxed and looked away into the darkness.
“V, follow me,” she said seductively and walked away again.
Thorn led the way, and I followed her, hand-in-hand, into the darkness.

Battling down the main highway toward town, the red Ferrari blazed out in front and the white Lotus remained hot on its taillights. The drivers punched down the accelerators and snapped through the gears trying to force every drop of speed from their vehicles, the cars weaving in and out of the nighttime traffic, with flecks of snow sparkling in
their
headlights. The white Lotus caught up to the side of the red Ferrari, its driver angrily swearing through the glass before suddenly swerving the Lotus across two lanes in an effort to shunt the red Ferrari off the road.
“What’s wrong with you, Accel? You’re gonna get someone killed,” the man in the red Ferra

the car out of the way. The driver of the red Ferrari was dressed smart causal in a leather jacket and crisp blue jeans with snazzy trainers. His blond hair was parted down the middle with a slight wave on either side, and he had lipstick on his cheek. He looked through the window to see his opponent, Accel, at the wheel of the white Lotus, snarling.
He swerved the red Ferrari around a big supermarket truck, which blocked the white Lotus from chasing the Ferrari. Then, he slammed the brakes down in the hope he would lose Accel. He slowed up and drifted behind the truck, and as he looked at the exit sign into downtown,
he
hoped he

No sign of him

ramp. He decided he would go and hang out in the downtown plaza until Accel had calmed down. Maybe then it would be safe to go back to the barracks and resolve the issue in private.
It was just a kiss
, he thought as his mind flashed back to the army barracks behind the sheds where he had shared a private moment with Julie, or Psy as she was better known.
Accel in the white Lotus scanned frantically around looking for the red Ferrari and his competition, Bolt. He’d lost sight of him around the supermarket truck and had to avoid a camper van drifting in the middle lane.
“Where are you Bolt? You can’t hide forever. I will find you,” Accel said, his brown eyes narrowing to focus.
He rubbed the bristles of his shaven head, trying to think where Bolt had disappeared to. He still wore the tracksuit he had been wearing on his run when he caught Psy and Bolt in a passionate embrace. He had told Bolt how he felt about her a few days before, but thinking about it, Bolt

and sped away—an admission of guilt Accel

As he scanned the reflection in the Lotus’ side view mirror, he saw the red Ferrari slip through the traffic and pull onto the
exit
ramp and off the highway.
“No way are you getting off that easy.”
He swung the white Lotus into a sharp U-turn, its wheels burning rubber and screeching, and headed the wrong way through the oncoming
traffic
back to the off ramp. Behind him, the supermarket truck slammed into the camper van and cars piled in from behind, ricocheting and spinning around the road. Flames burst out, and debris scattered across the road. In front of him, oncoming drivers beeped and flashed their lights at him, and he swerved onto the
edge of the road and then down the same off ramp as Bolt
. He surged onto the local road in time to catch Bolt calmly taking the red Ferrari into the cent
er
of town.
Accel
forced his way into the flow of traffic, hoping to catch up with him.
