“I meant let’s go back to The Cabin,” he half-smiled at me.

“Why, because you’re in a hurry to pack our stuff together and hit the road?” I sneered. “You just can’t wait to get back to work, can you?”

Taking my hand in his hand again, Ben looked at me and said, “I’m not going back to work. I quit.”

“Yeah, right,” I scoffed back at him.

“Seriously,” he said, his smile fading away. “I’m sorry for how I’ve treated you, Chloe. I’m sorry for neglecting you and making you so unhappy.”

“If this is all leading to some big joke...” I started, unable to believe what he was saying to me.

“No joke,” he said, shaking his head. “It’s you I want, Chloe. I just lost sight of that. It took coming to The Cabin to realise it.”

“So what changed your mind?” I said, still suspicious of what he was saying, although I was so desperate to believe what he was telling me.

“Someone told me I should go and find my wife,” he said. “And it was only then I realised I’d lost you.”

“Who told you to look for me?” I asked him.

“An angel of sorts,” he smiled.

“What’s that s’posed to mean?” I frowned.

“It doesn’t matter now,” he said, pulling me close. “What I’m trying to say is, I think we’ve both been lost. We lost sight of what’s important.”

“And what’s that?” I whispered.

“Us,” he said, leaning forward and kissing me gently on the lips.

Still holding my hand tight, Ben led me back towards The Cabin. Feeling bewildered by the sudden change in Ben, I said, “So you’re seriously going to quit your job?”

“Yep,” he said, sounding carefree and untroubled.

“So what are you going to do?” I asked.

We
are going to take our savings and get the hell out of here,” he smiled. “Just you and me, Chloe.”

“And where should we go?” I asked, feeling excited by his proposal.

“Anywhere we want to,” he said. “As long as we’re together, I don’t care.”

“We could travel the world,” I said, secretly pinching myself, fearing I was lost in one of my fantasies again.

“We could go and see all of those places we’ve only ever dreamt about,” he said, sounding just as excited as me now.

Reaching The Cabin, we climbed the small set of wooden steps. The front door was open. We both hesitated just outside. There was only the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves on the nearby trees. Ben led me inside. Jack’s and Jess’s coats and backpacks had gone, and so had they.

Grateful Jack and Jess had left us, I looked at Ben, and with a smile, I said, “Let’s go home.”

Ben pulled me close. With his eyes twinkling, he looked at me and said, “What’s the rush? Let’s spend some time alone together in The Cabin.”

He kicked the door closed with the heel of his boot, then led me by the hand into the bedroom.
