She nodded. “Yes, he did. I laughed when Tree told me how pissed Bael was when Michael stepped in and broke the blood oath Bael had with Anwar. I was like, ‘Yay, Michael. He rocks.’”

We laughed with her, and I had to agree. Michael did rock.

“I take it you know about the Devil’s third, then?” Nathan asked her.

“I do,” Carrie answered. “I think it’s comical the dark spirits think it has to do with the government.”

“Not to defend them or anything,” I said. “But from their perspective it does make sense.”

Carrie shrugged. “I guess so, but I wonder if Ayperos knows the truth about it.”

“I wouldn’t doubt it,” Nathan said.

“Has it sunk in your heads yet the Devil’s third is us three?” I asked. “Because I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. I mean
us
.” I pointed to myself, Carrie, and Tree. “
We
are the Devil’s third, and Bael will do everything he can to sway us to his side.”

“It is hard to believe,” Tree admitted. “As for Bael, he can kiss our asses, because we will
never
join forces with him.”

“Never.” Carrie echoed.

I nodded in agreement and laughed when Carrie stuck her hand out, palm facing downward. It immediately took me back to junior high when we teamed up against another group of kids to play kickball. “The Devil’s third,” she said in a strong and determined voice.

Tree shot me his signature goofy grin, stood, and placed his hand on top of hers. “The Devil’s third,” he chimed in.

I reached over her bed rail and placed my hand on Tree’s. “The Devil’s third,” I said, mirroring their smiles.

Carrie’s eyes swept to Nathan, sitting in the chair watching us. She gestured with her other hand for him to join in. “C’mon, Nathan. You’re part of this as well.”

Nathan gave her a funny look, though I could tell by the softness in his eyes he was touched by her invitation. “No, I’m not,” he said.

Carrie rolled her eyes. “Um, yeah you are. Bael just doesn’t know it yet,” she said, sounding mysterious. It made me curious about her respite in the other realm. “Trust me and get your ass over here.”

Nathan laughed. “Yes, ma’am.” He stepped beside Tree and added his hand on top of mine. “To the Devil’s . . .” He hesitated, unsure on what to say.

“Four,” Carrie said.

“To the Devil’s four,” we all said in unison.
