Jim ignored her question and moved toward the casket. Annabelle dissolved into a thin mist as he grabbed the handles. She had been haunting him since the day she died, even before they had found her. She had led him to a grave in the woods, then to the man who had killed her. She must have known that this was going to happen. After all, wouldn’t any father do the same?
He loaded the casket into his truck and drove a short distance down the highway before turning off onto a familiar gravel road. He climbed the face of the mountain in a series of hairpin turns until the road leveled off and then parked the truck in a large clearcut area.
He looked at Annabelle, sitting quietly in the passenger seat of the truck, still watching him with her soft doe eyes.
“Forgive me, baby,” he said softly, “Daddy loves you, and soon you’re going to be free.”

Mandy White
grew up on a farm in Creston, BC, where she cultivated her love of animals and outdoor activities. Writing has always been a deep passion of hers, although she took a variety of career paths before finally settling into it full-time. She is currently lurking in the forest somewhere on Vancouver Island, living her dream of being one of those weird, reclusive writer types.
She primarily writes fiction in the horror genre, often featuring Canadian characters and locations. She is also founder of WPaD (Writers, Poets and Deviants), a group of writers known for publishing charity anthologies for MS.
