“I was eavesdropping,” Emma said.
“I didn’t hear any ideas, though.”

Bazzlejet shrugged. “That’s because
we don’t have any.”

“I do,” Emma said.

“Really?” Chloe asked, growing
excited. “Where are you thinking?”

“Seraph’s Tear.”

Bazzlejet burst out laughing. Chloe
found the idea ridiculous, too, but Emma had said it with such conviction.

“Um…okay. Seraph’s Tear. Why?”
Chloe asked.

Emma didn’t hesitate. “Because it’s
a huge city. It’s been sitting there, empty for hundreds of years. It’s time
somebody brought it back to life.”

“Oh, sure,” Bazzlejet said,
wheezing. “There’s just the tiny matter of the curse, not to mention all those
mechamen and that giant ship of theirs.”

“Yes. I might need some help with
that part.”

Still mystified, but captivated by
Emma’s certainty, Chloe nodded. “You know we’ll do whatever we can.”

Emma smiled at her. A little of her
old self showed through. “I know you will. Just believe in me, Queen Chloe.”
She stepped up on the balcony rail. White wings materialized behind her.

Chloe gasped. “
Emma!”

Emma glanced over her shoulder.
“Believe in me, and I will deliver you a city.”

She flew away into the treetops.

Chloe and Bazzlejet stared at each
other, aghast.

“Did you see that?” Bazzlejet
asked.

Chloe nodded. It was all she could
manage at the moment. It wasn’t seeing Emma with wings that shocked her, but
rather the form the wings took.

“Am I crazy, or did her wings look just
like—”

She nodded again.

“Should we tell her?” Bazzlejet
asked.

Chloe thought about what Emma had
said. Taking on Robyn, the mechamen and the cursed city would have sounded
absurd coming from anyone else, but she knew they weren’t empty words. They
were a promise, just like those wings.
You will always have me and I will
keep fighting for you no matter what.

“Well?” Bazzlejet asked.

Chloe smiled. “I think she already
knows.”
