Imagine that you work in a messy and disorganized office. Stacks
of old paperwork, new projects, bills, folders, books, and magazines cover every surface. The desk drawers are equally stuffed and the filing cabinets are overflowing. When you walk in, it feels cluttered and overwhelming, you waste a lot of time each day just looking for the right files, and you get easily distracted by all the junk.

Then one day, you make the decision to get organized. There will be no more piles! You will touch each piece of paper only once. You will open the mail, read it, and either toss it in the trash or place it in an appropriate file. You will pay your bills immediately, and then file the payment stub.
