Outside the sun had broken through the clouds and she could hear birds singing. Soon now it would be spring. Spring when all was new and life began its cycle all over again.

Despite the ache in her heart, which never quite left her, Emily knew a resurgence of hope. Vane was right. She was young and the future was still there waiting for her.

Before she slept the thought came to her mind that for the rest of her life she would be living a lie, but she smothered the guilt. Perhaps sometimes it was kinder to tell a lie. Besides, it was done now and she hadn't the courage to break Vane's heart. After all, what harm could it do?
