third-most dangerous profession
An examination of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses reveals that nurses rank behind only police officers and correctional officers in the number of nonfatal assaults that resulted in days off from work due to illness or injury. A separate set of BLS data that more explicitly specifies professions shows that the assault incidence rates (again resulting in days off from work due to illness or injury) for RNs, LPNs, and licensed vocational nurses rank behind only health technicians and health aides.
