CHAPTER ONE

Gunfire rang in the dark alleyway as Sonja Fedorenko ducked behind a metal dumpster. She tucked the micro SD card into the padding compartment of her push up bra and rammed a clip into her 9mm. She poked her head up from behind the dumpster and returned a volley of suppressing fire in hopes to escape. Her ride was late and the KGB was hot on her trail. She was seriously reconsidering this defection business.

She heard the engine of a motorcycle pull up alongside the dumpster. “Get on!” a harsh male voice barked in Ukrainian.

Sonja holstered her weapon, flung her leg over the back seat of the motorcycle and grabbed on to the driver with one hand and placed the helmet over her red hair with the other. She fastened it in place as the man sped off down the alley away from the waiting KGB agents. They raced down the narrow side streets of Moscow towards the safe house the Ukrainian liberation front had set up for her.

The Ukraine has been an independent country since the late 1980s, when the USSR broke up, but for the past two decades, Russia had been steadily eroding the Ukraine’s power base in the Crimea to ‘reclaim’ it for themselves, due to the strategic nature of the area. Sonja was one of the elite KGB agents sent to work there to destabilize the government, and once she had found out exactly why the Russians wanted the Crimea, she decided to jump ship and defect to the USA.

The motorbike pulled up to a dingy apartment block. She looked around to see if anyone had followed them. Luckily, the driver took an indirect route to the safe house to shake off any potential pursuers. She entered the dark apartment building and scaled the stairs two at a time to reach the assigned flat. Sonja knocked in the special pattern used to inform the occupants that she had arrived and was safe to be let inside.

A burly looking man in a dirty tank top and faded jeans sat across from her, his florid features covered by a sheen of greasy-looking sweat. “So you’re the one needing out?” he said in Romanian.

“Yes, Nicolai, I am.” Sonja replied in the same language, looking the man directly in the eye. She knew what kind of payment these Romanian smugglers demanded from women and she had no desire to pay this greasy bastard.

“Well, we can’t help you.” He said smugly. “See, we don’t take KGB. We can house you here until you find a way out of the country, but we will not take you to Romania. KGB defections are too risky.”

“I thought you guys were the best, that’s why I picked you.” Sonja retorted.

“Not that good,” he said with a grin that showed his blackened front teeth. “Putin has ways of finding out who helps his runaways. Just because he says the old Soviet order is gone, doesn’t mean it is.”

“Tell me about it.” Sonja snorted. She had an idea. “Do you have a laptop?” she asked.

“Da, and an encrypted VPN, what do you need?” Nicolai replied.

“I’m going to set myself up as a mail-order bride. Some American is sure to help me out of the Ukraine for a better life in the State,” she said, producing a fake pout.

Nicolai laughed. “Some stupid horny American will definitely snap you up and get you out of this hell hole. You’re a beauty and you can play the damsel angle right.”

“That’s how I got ahead all these years. The ballet school taught me much.”

Nicolai snorted. “They still call it that?”

“It’s as good a name as any.” She replied. “So let’s get this profile set up, shall we? What kind of man should I be looking for?”

“Well, first you want one with some kind of money.” Nicolai counselled.

“Definitely. Usually businessmen looking for a trophy work well.” Sonja replied, as she entered her information.

“You gonna use your real name?” Nicolai asked.

“Nah, this one will do just fine. I like it well enough and might even change it legally once I get over there. I’ll make it part of the bargain before I hand over this intel.”

“You are going to need a passport and visas. I have an in with the US Embassy, I can at least help you with that. I might not be able to get you out of the country through my channels, but I can at least get you false documents. It’s the least I could do for that hefty deposit you paid me.”

“Thanks.” Sonja replied. She knew that the deposit she had paid Nicolai and his people was completely non-refundable, and it was a risk she willingly took. She had used his people in the past to smuggle high-ranking diplomats out of Russia to various safe nations while she was working to undermine Russia’s plans. Nicolai was the height of discretion, a bit of a letch, but after a few broken bones delivered by Sonja, he learned to keep his hands to himself, at least when it came to her and her clients.

“So here’s what I’ve got so far as a profile. My name, my place and date of birth, what I like:  long walks on the beach; men with fast cars; fast lifestyles; and good food. What I really don’t want are any offers from men in Dubai or any other Middle Eastern country. I targeted it to the USA only, so let’s see what happens.” She hit the submit button. “Let’s hope I get a bite. There’s free messaging going on so. Who knows.”

“Exactly.” Nicolai said as he put two shot glasses on the table. “While we wait for your prince charming, would you like some vodka?” he asked as he poured two shots of the clear liquid.

“Danke.” she said as she grabbed the glass and downed the contents in one gulp, savoring the warmth as it made its way down her throat.

Russell Kahn looked out of the large bay window that overlooked the scenic Onomea Bay and breathed deeply. He had recently returned from a top-secret tour in the Crimea and relished the laidback atmosphere of his home on the back of the big island of Hawaii. The black clouds were starting to pour in to announce the daily thunderstorm that washed over the tropical paradise every afternoon between three or four o’clock. during the hot, humid summer.

The AC was blowing full blast, but his amber skin still sparkled with a sheen of sweat. Russell flopped down on his black futon and flipped open his laptop on the glass coffee table. He tugged the legs down on his snug fitting boxer briefs in an effort to get comfortable in the sticky heat. He logged onto his VPN and checked his work email. He really shouldn’t be doing this, he thought. He was on post-deployment leave and his unit could survive without him for a month, which was more than generous, considering the average grunt would be lucky to get a week turn around before heading back out.

Thunder rumbled outside and the pitter-patter of the rain sounded gently on the window. He knew he should turn off his router in case of a direct strike, but he felt safe enough surrounded by the tall palm trees of the Hawaiian rain forest.

For laughs, he logged off the military VPN and went to an internet dating site. He had no problems getting women since most dug the exotic Indian look, but most were fleeting one-night stands that he picked up in a club in Honolulu. He was hoping for something a little more permanent than some bleached blonde bimbo who only wanted him for his benefits.

Russell scrolled through the profiles, none of which were local for some strange reason. It didn’t matter; he could afford to fly the lucky woman over if they hit it off over Skype. He finally stopped at a profile of a woman that he had something in common with, according to the information she had entered.

His amber eyes took in her profile picture showing her wavy red hair, cut in a bob that flattered her heart shaped face. Her cheekbones were high and her eyes were large and bright green. He was immediately captivated by her, and sent her a flirt through the website. He looked around some more as he waited for her reply. He didn’t find any other women that grabbed his attention like hers did.

It didn’t take long for her to send a flirt back and his heart began to race. There was a promotion going on that day for people to send free messages to each other. Russell took a deep breath and typed in a brief greeting message to give her a quick introduction of himself. He didn’t want to come off as desperate so he played it cool.

He was pretty honest in his introduction, second generation Indian American, lives in Hawaii, and a Navy SEAL. He didn’t tell her what rank he was for security reasons. He didn’t want to pick up someone from a hostile nation as a potential bride, especially since this woman hailed from the Ukraine. He didn’t want his dick taking control of his common sense, which it is was wont to do on occasion.

Her reply wasn’t long in coming. Her name was Sonja and she was born in Pripyat, Ukraine in 1982. Her family was relocated after the Chernobyl disaster to Slavutych where she spent most of her life. She studied ballet as a child and enjoys the outdoors. He decided to give her another message with his personal Skype address. Even if she wasn’t ready for video chat, they can still text over it. He hoped he wasn’t coming off too strongly. He just knew that the free messaging on the site was ending at midnight and he had better things to spend his money on than one that hooks people up.

Sonja replied quickly. She added his information to her Skype client and hoped they could chat soon. Russell felt his heart leap and his loins tighten. He knew deep down he shouldn’t get involved with a woman from the Ukraine, but he felt drawn to her for some strange reason. Luckily, Skype text conversations can be answered whenever it is convenient so he didn’t push for a time or date. He just replied that he hoped to hear from her soon.

He closed his laptop and walked to the kitchen to grab a beer. The rumble of thunder escalated outside as the torrent cascaded from the black clouds onto his small house, he noticed his power flicker momentarily as a rather loud peal of thunder cracked directly overhead and opened his stainless steel fridge. He grabbed a bottle of beer, cracked it open and closed the fridge door.

Russell opened his laptop once again and took a long swig of beer. He noticed a message icon flashing over the VPN login and he double clicked it.

“ATTENTION MAJ KAHN: PRESENCE REQUESTED AT 1400 TOMORROW AT USNB PEARL HARBOR BUILDING 751 ROOM 202 BY COL BANKES.”

Russell groaned as he placed his hand to his face. “What could he want?” He moaned aloud. “I’m on leave, for fuck sakes.” He knew that all the after action reports from the Crimea mission were filled in properly and submitted, he was debriefed for four hours after finally returning to Hawaii, despite his wanting to go home and have a hot shower and a decent meal. What more could his CO want from him right now.

He took another long swig of beer, draining the bottle, and lounged on the futon, staring intently at his laptop. “
Well so much for watching porn. That totally ruined the mood.”
He thought as he got up to get another cold one.

Sonja woke up on the dingy old spring mattress that Nicolai had laid on the floor as a bed for her. Her head was pounding from the hangover, and her stomach flopped around like a dying fish. She pulled her pillow over her head and groaned as the bright sun of the Russian summer tried to pierce the filthy curtains covering the grime-covered window.

She vaguely remembered making contact with a man through the dating site last night. She and Nicolai were drinking heavily as she actively trolled men who were only looking for one-night stands with her. There was one man, however, that struck a chord with her and could very well suit her needs.

She made sure Nicolai wrote his information down before she blacked out. Sonja peeked out from beneath her pillow and saw the paper with his scrawl stuck to the heavy white fridge door with an industrial magnet through her bleary eyes.

“Look who’s awake.” A jovial Romanian voice boomed from above.

“Fuck off...” Sonja moaned. “Can’t you see I’m dying, here?”

Nicolai laughed and nudged her with his foot. “Come on, you have a Skype date with an American SEAL.”

“I can text him later; can I get something to eat first?” She requested as she pushed herself up off the grey mattress.

“I have some eggs and sausage ready for you. I knew you would be feeling a bit delicate this morning.” Nicolai replied.

Sonja grunted as she made her way to the cheap chrome and mica table to sit down. Nicolai slid a plate of greasy fried eggs and sausage in front of her and plopped a tin cup full of tar black coffee next to it. She poked the food with her fork and shovelled it into her mouth, trying not to gag on the greasy texture. She sipped the thick, bitter brew to wash down the hangover cure breakfast.

Nicolai waited until she had finished eating before plopping the laptop down in front of her. He pulled open the lid and logged her on to the VPN. “You really need to get this set up. Every day you’re here, means one day closer to the KGB finding you.”

Sonja sighed and opened up the Skype client. She noticed that Nicolai had added Russell Kahn to the dummy account’s contact list while she was passed out. She took another sip of coffee as she opened up the text client.

She typed in a greeting, and was quickly met with a reply.

“So, you’re from the Ukraine?” the text on the screen read.

“Yeah,” she typed up a reply. “It’s pretty sucky here. I mean, between the Russians coming in and bombing the place and the Mafia wanting to steal women to sell in Dubai, we have very few options here.”

“Yeah, I heard about that.” Russell’s reply popped up. “So what kind of relationship are you looking for?”
