After one week add I-phenylalanine, 500 mg once before breakfast, once mid-morning, and once mid-afternoon. After three days increase to 1,000 mg before breakfast, mid-morning, and mid-afternoon.

These should be taken on an empty stomach.

Acetylcholine Support

See page 353 for GPC support. Acetylcholine is made from choline; you should get a sufficient amount with the supplementation recommendations above.

MEDICAL CARE PLAN

Testing for amino acids and neurotransmitters can help identify your particular imbalances more accurately.

Further customization of amino-acid therapy is possible based on testing and your symptoms.

Testing for omega-3 fats, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, and selenium can be helpful in identifying the need for additional supplementation.

Testing for methylation problems with homocysteine and methylmalonic acid is often very helpful in optimizing doses of folate, B
12
, and B
6
.

Occasionally medication may be necessary as a short-term treatment while you are balancing the seven keys to UltraWellness.

CHAPTER 23
KEY #2: BALANCE YOUR HORMONES

——————

Balance is the key to staying healthy, and nowhere is this truer than in the world of hormones. It is important not to think of them separately but as interconnected parts of a whole that all affect each other.

Hormones are influenced by imbalances in all the seven keys. Our body is one whole system where everything is linked to everything else. So improving your nutrition, or reducing inflammation, fixing your gut, and getting rid of toxins all support normalization of hormone function, which translates into better mood, more focus, and better brain function.

The quizzes in Part II may have alerted you to focus on imbalances that lead to problems with insulin, your thyroid, or sex hormones. Balancing your hormones is relatively easy. Follow these guidelines.

Optimizing Insulin Balance: Self-Care Plan

The key to insulin balance is eating the diet in the six-week program.

However, if you scored over 9 on the “Insulin” quiz, you may also need to integrate the following supplements.

Supplementation for Insulin Resistance

There are many blood-sugar balancing nutrients often found in combinations.

In addition to what you will get in your basic supplement plan, these nutrients can be used to help balance blood sugar and insulin.

Chromium, 500 mcg twice a day

Glucomannan fiber, polyglycoplex (PGX), or konjac root, four capsules five to ten minutes before meals with a glass of water
(Note: This is one of the most powerful treatments for insulin problems and weight.)

OPTIMIZING INSULIN BALANCE: MEDICAL CARE PLAN

1.
Additional testing may be necessary, including:

a.
A two-hour glucose-tolerance test measuring both insulin and glucose.

b.
Cholesterol profile measuring the size of cholesterol particles, which are smaller in insulin resistance and more prone to clog your arteries.

c.
C-reactive protein, which measures inflammation that is associated with insulin resistance.

d.
Liver function tests with GGT that identify the fatty liver associated with insulin resistance.

2.
Additional supplements that are often helpful include alpha lipoic acid, biotin, vanadium, N-acetylcysteine.

3.
Herbs may also be helpful, including extracts of hops, acacia bark, ginseng, green tea, fenugreek, cinnamon, gymnena sylvestre, bitter melon, and garlic.

4.
Medications such as glucophage (metformin) or Actos are occasionally helpful as a bridge in balancing your blood sugar.
