I shove my hand into my pocket as she shimmies
her clothes down to cover her body. The tiny trinket inside is cool
to the touch and small enough to fit around the tip of my index
finger. Rose gold with a dainty, conflict-free diamond—she
didn't pick it out, but I know she'll love it.

Still, my stomach tightens and sweat coats my
brow once again as I stand there behind her back, holding it out for
her, just waiting for her to spin around. It feels like a lifetime,
but I'd wait a thousand lifetimes, if it meant I could spend just one
with her.

She holds her torn shirt against her chest as
she turns. “Actually, could you run and grab it from the—”

Her jaw drops the moment she sees it. Her lip
begins to quiver as she stands frozen in front of me, staring at my
hand like it's an apparition. Nothing else moves except her eyes,
which dart up to meet my own.

When I penned the word “mine” on
her hip, I thought I was claiming her, but it meant so much more than
that. From that moment, and probably before it, I was hers. And I
always would be.

She blinks back the tears that flood her eyes,
but she can't stop the smile that spreads across her face.

“Yes.”
