“Why? Why was that so important? It wouldn’t have changed a thing.”

“That’s where you’re wrong.” He shoved a hand through his hair, turning his back to her. He could barely look at her right now, their heated argument dredging up years he’d tried to forget—tried to bury.

“The first time we made love, I felt a pull to you that was so strong I wondered if you were my heart mate.” He spun around when she gasped. Her shock irritated him. If she hadn’t run from him, he could have told her all this one hundred and fifty years ago! They could have been together all this time.

“It was confusing to me at the time, because I’d only known heart mates to be vampires. It wasn’t until much later that vampires began bonding with other
supras
, as well as humans. But by then it was too late. And do you know why, Jasmeene?” He grabbed her when she tried to back away, the naked anger and bottled pain he’d carried around for years, now swirling in his eyes. “Don’t run away, Jasmeene, because you need to hear this. You need to know that by the time I discovered I could have bonded with you, could have turned you and made you my heart mate—”

“Roarke.” Her eyes pleaded with him.

He ignored her. “By the time I discovered this, I realised that if you were truly human, you were lost to me forever.”

She called his name again, the tortured plea falling on deaf ears. He didn’t bother touching her emotions, because he knew she shared his pain, and she deserved every measure of it. While she’d walked through life, blissfully unaware, he’d had to face the reality that his heart mate—the other half of his soul — had walked the earth, but was now gone.

She jerked away from him. “I was not blissfully unaware. You broke my heart.”

“And you sent me into two decades of depression and despair! Even after I pulled myself together, I had to face the reality that I would never know the true love and completion of a heart mate. Do you even know what that did to me?”

She chuckled, but the sound was raw and bitter. “So what—you decided to fuck everything that moved in order to forget I existed? Was that your way of coping, Roarke?”

“Yes.”

She snorted. “I don’t believe you. I believe you fucked everything that moved before you met me. That’s just who you are—that’s just your nature.”

“I admit I was no virgin when we met,” he said quietly. “But the man you see today, Jasmeene— you made him.”

“Don’t put this all on me,” she snapped. “One’s thoughts are open and honest, as truthful as any person can be.  That night, when I listened in on your thoughts, I believed them. I had no way of knowing you’d grow a conscience. But while we’re placing blame, then you should know the woman you see before you, the one who can’t love, can’t trust—well, you made her too.”

Jasmeene spun around and headed for the door, her body shaking with fury.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“We’re done here,” she shot from over her shoulder, wrenching open the door, but a large, tanned hand slammed it shut.

“Do you think I waited a century and a half to let you walk out that door?” He locked it again and spun her around, her gaze clashing with his. Fury burned bright in his emerald eyes, as she was sure it burned in her own, along with the pain they’d caused each other. But pushing it all aside was an emotion she’d tried to forget she could even feel. Yet, it was there, open and honest and raw in his eyes, and she knew even if he couldn’t see it written all over her face, he could certainly feel it.

After all this time, and all these years, she still loved him. She’d thought herself stupid, and foolish, a girl with a ridiculous crush, but it all made sense now. He was her heart mate—the other half of her soul — and her blood called to him, their bond as ancient and powerful as time itself. She hadn’t known. She’d suspected, but only Roarke would have known for sure. He’d tried to find her, tried to claim her, but she’d been long gone, believing he’d never love her the way she loved him, that he couldn’t possibly be her heart mate if he could walk away from her so easily.

She touched his face, her name spilling from his lips, just as he crushed his mouth to hers. She trembled against him, heat flooding her passage, eager to take him deep inside her.

Their clothes disappeared, and she grinned at his impatience. Her back slammed against the door, his hard body forcing the air from her lungs. It was only a mild discomfort. He soothed her with his lips, his tongue, the gentle, searching caress of his fingers. She shuddered when he settled between her thighs, her ankles clasping behind him.

There was no tenderness, no flowery words, only a raw, carnal passion that consumed them both, and she amusedly wondered if they’d ever take their time long enough to make love.

“Maybe fifty years from now,” he answered as he thrust into her in one smooth stroke. Their sobs of pleasure echoed off the walls around them, their sweat slick bodies twisting and writhing against each other, as he furiously pounded into her up against the door.

She clung to his back, her nails digging deep, and she threw her hips at him, impaling her cunt on his cock, working her body in a sensual circle until she thought he would drop her when his legs nearly buckled.

“Jasmeene,” he warned, pinning her against the door, so that she was forced to accept the pounding thrust of his ruddy length. He slammed into her harder, her pussy welcoming him, accepting him as it drenched his shaft with her juices.

His strokes grew uneven, and when he slipped to the ground, covering her with his body she knew he was close.

“Now, Jasmeene. Now.”

Her orgasm ripped through her and she bore down on him, her incisors piercing his flesh, at the same time he bit into her neck. Tiny explosions ricocheted in her head, and she closed her eyes trying to ease the sharp crack of fireworks that seemed to burst all around her as a scorching bolt of heat sliced through her heart, marking it for eternity. They came at the same time, their blood bond sealing their fates as they exchanged the essence of themselves.

They lay twisted in each other’s arms for a long time, just holding one another in blissful silence.

Roarke was the first to stir, shifting off of her. His fingers traced the curve of her lips, her cheeks, even smoothing the hair of her eyebrows. “I love you,” he whispered, the words flowing from him as if he said them every day.

“I certainly plan to,” he said, responding to her thoughts.

She rolled over, a smile on her face, her unbound hair caressing his shoulder.

“Well you’d better Roarke Dimitru because a century and a half is a long time to love a man, and I plan to tell you ‘I love you’ every day, all day in order to make up for lost time.”

She arched a brow at the grin on his face. ‘Well don’t look at me. I certainly have no plan to stop you,” he teased.

They remained in his office, making love on every imaginable surface until the sun climbed into the sky, and the patter of footsteps told them people were starting to arrive for work. They’d just stumbled to their feet when the door knob rattled, followed by a heavy knock.

Gabe.

“Roarke. Why the hell is this door locked?”

He could already hear Gabe’s stern warning—
I told you not to fuck the rookie.

He glanced at Jasmeene’s bee stung lips and wild, bed hair with a grin.

Well, it was certainly too late for that.
