You will not touch her!

The doctor did not blink but merely gave him a bland look.

Maris sighed. “Vados, I just changed
species
. I expected this type of exam along with all the blood tests. You know, human women are supposed to get one ‘well-woman’ exam each year anyway.”

She spoke as if another male putting his hands on her, touching her
there
was acceptable.

It was not.

“No,” he snapped.

“Yes,” she patiently returned.

He was immovable on this matter. “No.”

“Vados.” She sighed.

“No. No male will touch—”

“Not even to ensure your hatchling is safe within her womb.”

Vados jolted, his half-nude mate forgotten. “What now?”

Distantly he recognized a small hand sliding into his and squeezing as he waited for Faim to reply.

“Your mate is carrying your young.” Faim gestured to Maris. “It is why I requested further examination of a more intimate nature for your mate. Other pregnancies have had no problems, but they also did not conceive at the time of transition.”

The words slowly made their way through his mind. It was odd, he was usually an intelligent male, and yet he felt as if he were like a newborn. “Hatch…”

Faim spoke to Maris. “Is he always this slow? We may be able to genetically alter the child to ensure it is not deficient in this way.”

“I am not deficient,” Vados snapped and took a calming breath. The male made him wish for human alcohol. “My mate is carrying our hatchling.”

“I believe he was lying when he said he was not deficient,” Faim whispered, but there was a teasing light in his eyes.

“Answer the question, old man.” He growled once more.

Vados
.”

Her tone made him sigh and he forced himself to relax. He could not kill the doctor for his teasing until their hatchling was safe and out of his mate. Another six months of this male. He growled again and then his attention rested on Maris, his mate, his one. “I am sorry, my mate, but he is teasing a male who feels as if his greatest wish is within reach.”

She gently squeezed his hand and it was the first moment he realized they even touched. “You’ve always wanted a child?”

All thoughts of Faim were lost as moisture filled her eyes. He pulled his hand free and cupped her cheeks. “I grew up without a mother, without the softness of a female. It has made me yearn for a female to call my own. A female to cherish and keep safe and love with my soul. The goddess of the depths has given me you. From the first moment I saw you, touched you, I wanted you to carry our hatchlings, and now she has given that gift as well.”

A tear spilled over her lashes and slid down her cheek.

“I do not want a child, my mate. I want
our
child
ren
.”

“More than one?”

“Many more.” He nodded.

“Two?”

“If that is your wish.” They could start with two, at least. He had the rest of their lives to convince her to have more.

He was thinking five. He eyed her body, her wide hips now hidden beneath the thin paper. Perhaps six.
