CHAPTER
FIFTY
Feet first. Then hands. Then a
straightening of the knees.
My shadow
rose up in its true form and cast across Cyrus Rance’s body. My lips parted and
my fingers touched them as the low yawn exhaled.
Then I looked
down at Cyrus again.
And kicked
his head so hard it broke off and rolled into the pool.
“Haley,
Haley, Haley,” I murmured out loud. “What have you been up to here?”
I walked
towards the backdoor and pushed it open.
The house was
dark – other than some weird green light emitting itself from the floor in the
living area. Not to my taste. I flicked the main switch in the kitchen and hall
to put an end to it.
My gaze
settled on the corpse in the hallway.
It had been
torn to shreds.
“Disgusting,”
I said under my breath. “You disgusting animals.”
I chuckled.
Then I turned
back to the living room.
There was a
large pool of red in the centre. I crouched down and removed the glove on my
hand. I let my fingers touch the blood.
Was it…
Was it
Haley’s?
I put a drop
to my tongue.
“Oh,” I
murmured.
I sank two
fingers into it, and then licked them clean.
“Oooohh…”
I bowed down
putting my face first into the puddle, sucking up all that I could.
It wasn’t
enough. Not even close.
But… But…
What an
appetizer.
I fell down
on my back, the biggest smile on my face I’ve had in years.
The carpet
still had her smell.
“How I tease you,”
I whispered. “How I tempt and taunt you. To glimpse this is pure suffering.”
I sat back
up, my eyes trained towards the camera.
“Hello.”
I got up and
disconnected the USB.
Still sitting
on the floor, I attached it to my phone.
My eyes could
hardly believe what they could see.
It was Haley
of course.
Every. Last.
Piece.
Of her.
I fell back
onto the floor grinning again. “Ooooh… Fuck… I’ve got to kill you. I’ve got to
kill you sooooobaaaaaad…”
I chuckled to
myself.
I was so
weakened by her.
So weakened …
I could explode…
But it wasn’t
time.
I forced
myself off the floor and headed back outside.
I looked up
to the moon, appreciating all its fullness.
Then I put
the phone to my ear.
“Hello…” I
said quietly. “Jason…?”
“I’m gonna
fucking kill you,” he barked at me. “I’m rip you limb from limb –”
“Don’t worry,
I didn’t kill your girlfriend. Not yet anyway.”
“Fuck you.
Where’s proof? Send me a photo!”
“I will. Pace
yourself. I haven’t told you what you need to do to get her back yet.”
“What?”
I paused.
Hesitated.
Listened to
him breathe.
“Haley’s
going to be coming back to you soon,” I said. “When you see her, I want you to
pass on a message.”
“What?”
“I want you
to fuck her. For me.”
“Fuck her?
Fuck you.”
“She doesn’t
have to know it’s from me. At least, not right away.”
“You
bastard,” Jason said softly.
“Is it a deal
then? You fuck Haley, and then you get Roxanne back.”
Silence on
his end.
“You don’t
want me to hurt her do you?” he asked.
“No,” I said.
“You leave that to me.”
And then the
phone was gone. As my arms were gone, and my feet were gone.
Black
feathered wings, expanded from my back…
As I flew
away, but one small raven…
Into the
night.
