Landon expected surprise, but Ty merely cocked his head. “You’re leaving for Albuquerque next month.”

“Found out Friday that they’re behind on construction. It’ll be at least another six months before they’re ready for me.”

“Huh.”

He’d expected more of a reaction, whether positive or negative. But Ty was quiet. Too quiet. And his gaze was unfocused. It was probably too soon. Not for Landon. He knew what he wanted. But for Ty. After all, he’d just lost his family. He was still adjusting. He should have waited for Ty to suggest it. Damn, putting Ty on the spot had been selfish.

Ty was silent for so long that Landon finally said, “It was just a thought.”

“A good one.” Ty refocused on Landon. “I’m just trying to figure out how to work it.”

“Yeah, I guess you can’t cover state politics from Houston.” He’d considered that but had hoped Ty could find a way around it. Hell, Landon would even look for a job in Austin if Ty asked him, but he couldn’t very well suggest it himself. That would really put him on the spot.

“I’ve been talking to my editor about doing political commentary. A column.”

That was news. He hadn’t said a word about it to Landon. “Your idea or hers?”

“Mine. It would give me more flexibility with my living arrangements. I figured I could make the transition while you were in Albuquerque. Then when you came back...”

Landon breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. “Sure. We can wait.”

“That’s twelve fucking months away.” Ty sounded as if Landon had lost his mind.

“More like thirteen. But who’s counting? Could be longer if construction is pushed back again.”

“So I speed up my transition. I could be in Houston in a month or two. And if everything goes smoothly, I might be able to go to Albuquerque with you.”

The suggestion stunned him. Landon tried to tamp down his hopes, but they were fighting back. Giddiness made his voice a little high and tight. “You think your editor will go for it?”

“I think she’ll do just about anything to keep me from jumping to another paper.” He chuckled. “It doesn’t hurt that she’s a romantic.”

Landon placed his palm over Ty’s heart. The beat was a little fast, echoing Landon’s. “You’re sure about this. I mean, I don’t want to screw up your career. Do you need to think about it?”

Ty covered Landon’s hand, the rough callouses so familiar, so right. “I’ve been thinking about it for months.” He paused and his expression turned serious. “I love you, Landon. I miss the hell out of you when I’m in Austin, and I’m tired of contributing to the ruts on I-10 and 71.”

“We’re gonna do this,” Landon said in wonder. “We’re really gonna do this.”

Ty lifted his head and placed a feather-soft kiss on Landon’s lips, then lowered his head to the pillow and smiled. “Looks that way.”
